Correlazione illusoria e stereotipo etnico in età evolutiva
Recent studies have shown that the illusory correlation bias is present in children starting as early as age six. In the original experimental paradigm used with adults and subsequently adapted for children, the distinction between a majority and a minority group rests uniquely upon the numerical size of the two groups, so that the majority group is assigned the larger number of behaviors. In the present study we use, in addition to the numerical distinction of the two groups, a second distinction based on the ethnicity of the members of the groups. In this case the child observer may or may not be a member of the ethnic group presented. The results show that the illusory correlation bias disappears when the children observers (Italian children) are presented with situations in which members of their own ethnic group are the numerical minority. This is achieved by presenting a majority group that has somatic traits commonly associated with African children and a minority group with somatic traits of European children. These results emphasize how membership in a group can interfere with the formation of the illusory correlation bias intended solely as a cognitive error
Children correlate infrequent behaviors with minority groups: a case of illusory correlation
Misurare la qualità della relazione fraterna: la validazione del Sibling Relationship Inventory su un campione italiano di primogeniti e secondogeniti
Introduzione: Obiettivo
di questo studio è indagare la struttura
fattoriale del Sibling Relationship Inventory
(SRI; Stocker e McHale, 1992),
un questionario creato per misurare la
qualità del rapporto fraterno, su due
campioni indipendenti di primogeniti e
secondogeniti italiani, al fine di esaminare
l’attendibilità e la validità di costrutto
dello strumento al variare dell’ordine
di genitura. Metodi: Il SRI è
stato somministrato a 171 primogeniti e
168 secondogeniti (età media: 8,75
anni; DS = .77). Per ciascuno dei sottogruppi
sono state condotte due analisi
fattoriali esplorative (EFA) e due analisi
fattoriali confermative (CFA). Infine, è
stata verificata l’invarianza fattoriale
tra i due sottocampioni. Risultati: Le
analisi rivelano una medesima struttura latente sia per primi che secondi nati,
organizzata nei fattori Affetto, Conflitto
e Rivalità, confermando il modello
originario. Conclusioni: Lo strumento
misura gli stessi costrutti psicologici tra
fratelli maggiori e minori, confermandosi
come utile mezzo per l’indagine della
qualità del rapporto fraterno

Abstract
Given the widespread prevalence of mathematics anxiety (MA) and its detrimental long-term impact on academic performance and professional development, it is essential to develop standardized tools capable of identifying MA as early as possible. One of the scales most often used to assess MA is the Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale (AMAS) (Hopko, Mahadevan, Bare, & Hunt, 2003). The first aim of the present study was to validate this tool in a large sample of Italian primary school children, to confirm the factor structure of the AMAS and to develop standardized norms that can be used in the clinical field. Moreover, as the relation between MA and gender has been extensively reported in adult samples, a second goal of the study was to test the invariance of the scale across genders
Nonuniqueness of the traveling wave speed for harmonic heat flow
AbstractGiven any wave speed c∈R, we construct a traveling wave solution of ut=Δu+|∇u|2u in an infinitely long cylinder, which connects two locally stable and axially symmetric steady states at x3=±∞. Here u is a director field with values in S2⊂R3: |u|=1. The traveling wave has a singular point on the cylinder axis. In view of the bistable character of the potential, the result is surprising, and it is intimately related to the nonuniqueness of the harmonic map flow itself. We show that for only one wave speed the traveling wave behaves locally, near its singular point, as a symmetric harmonic map
