Public Awareness of Flood Risk: the Role of the Environment Agency Flood Map, 2006-2007 aims to investigate how ‘official’ information translates into public understanding and action, using the example of the Environment Agency's (EA) flood map web site. The study has two different elements; a web survey and flood map experiments. The web survey was delivered on-line from the EA servers, with a portal on the flood map site. Users of the EA web page were asked to complete the survey which resulted in 1,395 valid responses. Questions were asked about the EA website and in particular the flood map. The flood map experiments were in-depth interviews with 51 respondents from specially selected case study areas which had different degrees of flood experience. Individuals were asked to work through online flood map material and their responses to specific questions were recorded. The case study areas where: Brockenhurst, Hampshire (9 participants - inland river flooding/moderate risk); Hambeldon, Hampshire (11 participants – recent groundwater flooding/high risk), Carlisle, Cumbria (13 participants – recent inland river flooding/high risk), and a control population of university environmental management students representing highly informed users with low current risk - Portsmouth University (18 participants). Further information is available from the ESRC award web page (http://www.esrcsocietytoday/esrcinfocentre/viewawardpage.aspx?awardnumber=RES-000-22-1710). </span

Private School K-12 Educator Perceptions Of Professional Learning Communities Based On Years of Experience

No full text
This mixed methods research analyzes the effectiveness of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) as viewed through the lens of Central California private school teachers based on years of experience. The necessity for the research derived from the utilization of PLCs as an effective training methodology for private school educators. PLCs are increasingly being implemented regionally as well as throughout the state of California for traditional (non-faith based) K-12 institutions. This mixed methods study focuses on K-12 teachers in private K-12 schools who have already implemented the PLC model to determine its overall effectiveness as perceived by educators. The desire to yield both quantifiable data and qualitative inferences determined the practicability of a mixed methods approach to the survey. Through utilization of the Professional Learning Community Assessment-Revised (PLCA-R) survey method, responses were delivered through an online survey tool developed by Oliver, Hipp and Huffman and facilitated by hosting website Southwest Educational Development Laboratory (SEDL).ProQuest Traditional Publishing Optio

Tradition, Natural Law, and Rational Disagreement : Ethics in Alasdair MacIntyre and C. S. Lewis

No full text
Deep disagreement in ethics is a common and well-recognized phenomenon, arising when people view an issue from different, incommensurable perspectives. Its pervasiveness can tempt us to doubt the power of reason, question the existence or efficacy of a natural law, and fall into moral relativism or subjectivism. Alasdair MacIntyre's account of ethics tries to rescue rationality, rebuff relativism, and vindicate the natural law with an account of how, even in a seemingly intractable conflict of theories, rational enquiry and progress is possible. In so doing, MacIntyre's arguments are strikingly similar to points C. S. Lewis makes about tradition, enquiry, and the natural law in his book The Abolition of Man. However, each author approaches these topics in different ways and with different emphases. This thesis begins with a detailed account of MacIntyre's views and some of the criticisms that can be raised against it. The second chapter then examines C. S. Lewis' arguments and compares them with MacIntyre's account of ethics. The final chapter gives a combined picture of moral argumentation, showing ways in which each author can help address objectionable gaps in the other's arguments about tradition, reason, and the natural law
