Protocol for a scoping review of the use of information and communication technology platforms for the delivery and utilisation of transgender healthcare
INTRODUCTION: In recent years, there has been strong interest in making digital health and social tools more accessible, particularly among vulnerable and stigmatised groups such as transgender people. While transgender people experience unique physical, mental and sexual health needs, not much is currently known about the extent to which they use information and communication technologies such as short messaging service and videoconferencing to access health services. In this paper, we discuss our protocol for a scoping review of the literature about the delivery and utilisation of digitally mediated health services for transgender populations. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review of the provision and experience of telemedicine among transgender people will follow the methodological framework developed by Arksey and O’Malley. The search will be conducted using three online databases, namely PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus, with additional literature explored using Google Scholar to identify grey literature. Relevant English-language studies will be shortlisted after completing a title and abstract review based on defined inclusion criteria. Following that, a final list of included studies will be compiled after a full-text review of the shortlisted articles has been completed. To enable the screening process, a team of researchers will be assigned refereed publications explicitly referring to the provision and experience of transgender healthcare through telemedicine. Screening performed independently will then collaboratively be reviewed to maintain consistency. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The research is exempt from ethics approval since our analysis is based on extant research into the use of digital technologies in providing healthcare to transgender people. The results of this study will be disseminated through peer-reviewed academic publications and presentations. Our analysis will guide the design of further research and practice relating to the use of digital communication technologies to deliver healthcare services to transgender people
International Community-involved LGBTQ+ Health Research: Multidisciplinary Reflections and Strategies
This chapter examines the experiences, challenges, and strategies involved in conducting meaningful community-engaged research with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, queer/questioning and other sexuality and gender diverse identities (LGBTQ+) communities across three Asia-Pacific contexts: Australia, Hong Kong, and Singapore. It draws on the multidisciplinary expertise and lived experiences of collaborators working in health, social sciences, and community leadership. Addressing the complexities of multicultural LGBTQ+ health and migration research, the chapter explores structural, interpersonal, and conceptual challenges while critically interrogating Western-centric frameworks of gender, sexuality, and culture. Key strategies for fostering equitable, culturally safe research partnerships are presented, emphasising the importance of centring the voices and priorities of marginalised LGBTQ+ communities by actively involving them throughout the research process, from conception to dissemination. The chapter is grounded in insights from a participatory focus group facilitated by young, culturally diverse LGBTQ+ leaders. Through critical reflections, it identifies opportunities and barriers to advancing community-centred research that can support community well-being and shape inclusive policy and practice
The theoretical prediction of the boundary-layer-blockage and external flow choking at moving aircraft in ground effects
The theoretical discoveries of the Sanal flow choking [V. R. Sanal Kumar et al., "Sanal flow choking: A paradigm shift in computational fluid dynamics code verification and diagnosing detonation and hemorrhage in real-world fluid-flow systems,"Global Challenges 4, 2000012 (2020)] and streamtube flow choking [V. R. Sanal Kumar et al., "Deflagration to detonation transition in chemical rockets with sudden expansion/divergence regions,"AIAA Paper No. 2020-3520, 2020] achieved significant contemplation in all branches of science and engineering for resolving various unanswered scientific questions brought onward from the beginning of this era [V. R. Sanal Kumar et al., "A closed-form analytical model for predicting 3D boundary layer displacement thickness for the validation of viscous flow solvers,"AIP Adv. 8, 025315 (2018)]. The applications of these flow choking phenomena are more significant in aerospace industries [V. R. Sanal Kumar et al., "Nanoscale flow choking and spaceflight effects on cardiovascular risk of astronauts - A new perspective,"AIAA Paper No. 2021-0357, 2021] and medical sciences [V. R. Sanal Kumar et al., "Lopsided blood-thinning drug increases the risk of internal flow choking leading to shock wave generation causing asymptomatic cardiovascular disease,"Global Challenges 2021, 2000076]. Herein, as an offshoot of the Sanal flow choking phenomena, the proof of the concept of boundary-layer-blockage (BLB) persuaded external-flow-choking (EFC) at aircraft-in-ground (AIG)-effect is presented. When the aircraft's ground clearance is relatively low, the evolving BLB factor from both planes (the bottom surface of the aircraft and the ground) creates a transient fluid-throat, leading to the Sanal flow choking and supersonic flow development in the duct flow region. In this physical situation, the pressure ratio (Ptotal/Pstatic) at the external flow choking region is exclusively a function of the specific heat ratio of the fluid. The EFC is more prone for the low wing aircraft flying in the near vicinity to the ground and/or sea with relatively high subsonic Mach number and low angle of attack. At this flying condition, the underside of the aircraft (fuselage and/or wing) and the ground creates the convergent-divergent duct flow effect leading to the EFC at the critical total-to-static pressure ratio. The accurate estimation of the BLB factor at the location of the EFC at AIG effect is presented in this manuscript as a universal yardstick for two-dimensional (2D) in silico simulation. For establishing the proof of the concept of external flow choking and supersonic flow development and shock wave generation, the 2D in silico results are presented for both stationary and moving airfoils in ground effect. In silico results show that the airfoil at stationary position exhibits relatively higher BLB factor and an immediate occurrence of the EFC than the same airfoil moving with the identical inflow Mach number and Reynolds number. We could establish herein that the moving vehicle simulation is inevitable for capturing actual flow physics and further precise examination of the BLB factor and the possibilities of the occurrence of the EFC for credible trajectory optimization of high-speed ground-effect vehicles. © 2021 Author(s).12 month embargo; published online: 11 March 2021This item from the UA Faculty Publications collection is made available by the University of Arizona with support from the University of Arizona Libraries. Information and communication technology-based health interventions for transgender people: A scoping review
In the recent past, there has been a strong interest in the use of information and communication technology (ICT) to deliver healthcare to ‘hard-to-reach’ populations. This scoping review aims to explore the types of ICT-based health interventions for transgender people, and the concerns on using these interventions and ways to address these concerns. Guided by the scoping review frameworks offered by Arksey & O’Malley and the PRISMA-ScR checklist, literature search was conducted in May 2021 and January 2022 in three databases (PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus). The two searches yielded a total of 889 non-duplicated articles, with 47 of them meeting the inclusion criteria. The 47 articles described 39 unique health projects/programs, covering 8 types of ICT-based interventions: videoconferencing, smartphone applications, messaging, e-coaching, self-learning platforms, telephone, social media, and e-consultation platforms. Over 80% of the health projects identified were conducted in North America, and 62% focused on HIV/sexual health. The findings of this review suggest that transgender people had often been regarded as a small subsample in ICT-based health projects that target other population groups (such as ‘men who have sex with men’ or ‘sexual minority’). Many projects did not indicate whether transgender people were included in the development or evaluation of the project. Relatively little is known about the implementation of ICT-based trans health interventions outside the context of HIV/sexual health, in resource limiting settings, and among transgender people of Asian, Indigenous or other non-White/Black/Hispanic backgrounds. While the range of interventions identified demonstrate the huge potentials of ICT to improve healthcare access for transgender people, the current body of literature is still far from adequate for making comprehensive recommendations on the best practice of ICT-based interventions for transgender people. Future ICT-based interventions need to be more inclusive and specified, in order to ensure the interventions are safe, accessible and effective for transgender people
