following the thoughts
Role of friendship in the enhancement of human wellbeing – a descriptive research with special reference to ‘letters from a stoic’ by Seneca
One of the research area in the ancient philosophy is wellbeing of human beings. Thoughts of Seneca,
who was an influential Stoic philosopher during the Hellenistic period in the history of western
philosophy, are remarkable in the research area. He provided enormous novel ideas about the human
wellbeing in relation with human relationship giving increased to friendship. There were other
philosophers also discussed about friendship like Pythagoras in Pre-Greek period, Plato and Aristotle
in Greek period, Thiruvalluvan in Indian philosophy but Seneca is much specific in the matter and
strongly instructs the reader on the issues through his moral letters. The instruction includes the
followings; importance of good friendship, two extreme conditions of belief, methods to construct
good quality of friendship, rules to follow in keeping healthy friendship and rebuilding new
friendship after the loss of old friendship, symptoms to leave from a friendship, etc. This research
article is written in a descriptive method analyzing the concepts of friendship in the above category
embedded in the one hundred and twenty for letters in the book of ‘Letters from A Stoic’ written by
Seneca. The objective of the research is to critically analyze the concepts in the book and present the
possibilities of following them to establish a healthy and long term friendship. For this purpose, the
research is conducted in qualitative method as a descriptive study with secondary resources. The
guiding research questions are, what kind of pre-conditions are required for a healthy friendship?
What kind of benefits may be achieved from friendship to individuals as well as to society? What are
the prime role of friendship in the enhancement of human wellbeing
Stoic strategies for overcoming psychological challenges: insights from Seneca
The human experience is deeply intertwined with emotions like fear, anger, and anxiety, which, if
misunderstood, can lead to significant psychological challenges. Stoic philosophy, particularly as
articulated by Seneca, offers practical guidance for managing these emotions and cultivating a
virtuous and balanced life. This research delves into the relevance of Seneca's insights in addressing
contemporary psychological problems, providing a pathway to well-being rooted in philosophical
wisdom. Modern life is rife with emotional turbulence caused by fear of the future, societal
expectations, and attachment to material possessions. These anxieties often manifest as
psychological disorders, reducing life satisfaction and happiness. Although numerous therapeutic
approaches exist, the timeless wisdom of Stoicism remains underexplored as a viable method for
psychological resilience. Seneca’s writings offer profound guidance on mastering emotions and
fostering mental clarity. This study addresses the following questions: How can Seneca's Stoic
principles help individuals manage fear, anger, and anxiety? What practical techniques does Seneca
propose for psychological well-being? How can these ancient strategies be applied to
contemporary challenges? The research aims to: Examine Seneca’s teachings on fear, anger, and
emotional control, analyze Stoic techniques for psychological resilience and their relevance today,
propose a framework for integrating Stoic principles into modern therapeutic practices. The
research employs a qualitative analytical approach, focusing on a critical study of Seneca’s letters
and works like On Anger, On the Shortness of Life. Key Stoic concepts such as emotional theory,
preparation for future adversities, and training in poverty are examined. These insights are
contextualized within modern psychological frameworks to highlight their applicability to
contemporary life. The study finds that Seneca’s philosophy emphasizes the importance of
distinguishing between controllable and uncontrollable factors, reframing thoughts to focus on the
present, and developing virtues such as courage, temperance, and wisdom. Techniques like training
in poverty and delaying emotional reactions are identified as effective methods for reducing fear and anger. These practices enable individuals to live with resilience and purpose, regardless of
external circumstances. Seneca’s Stoic strategies remain profoundly relevant, offering a timeless
blueprint for psychological well-being. By adopting these principles, individuals can transcend
emotional turmoil and lead lives marked by balance, clarity, and virtue. This study underscores the
potential of Stoicism as a complementary approach to modern psychological challenges, providing
valuable insights for both individuals and practitioners
The divine order and human agency in stoic philosophy: Epictetus' framework for a fulfilled life
Stoic philosophy, specifically the teachings of Epictetus, offers profound insights into achieving
fulfilment in life through the harmonious balance of divine order and human agency. Epictetus’
philosophy emphasizes the dichotomy of control—distinguishing between what is within our
power and what lies beyond it. This framework provides a practical guide for navigating life's
uncertainties and developing resilience. While contemporary psychological approaches address
similar concerns, the applicability of Epictetus’ teachings in modern contexts remains an area of
interest that warrants exploration. In today’s fast-paced and uncertain world, individuals often face
existential anxieties, emotional instability, and a lack of purpose. While modern psychological and
philosophical approaches attempt to address these issues, ancient Stoic philosophy offers timeless
wisdom that emphasizes self-mastery, resilience, and alignment with a rational order. However,
the relevance of Epictetus’ philosophical framework, especially his integration of divine order and
human agency, in addressing contemporary challenges is underexamined. This paper aims to
analyse Epictetus’ framework of divine order and human agency as a means of achieving a fulfilled
life. It seeks to highlight how aligning human actions with nature and reason, as Epictetus
proposes, can address contemporary concerns related to well-being, ethical decision-making, and
personal resilience. The study employs a qualitative approach, focusing on a textual analysis of
Epictetus’ key works, The Discourses and The Enchiridion. Core themes related to divine order, human
agency, and fulfilment are extracted and analysed. Secondary sources are consulted to contextualize
these themes within modern frameworks of ethics, psychology, and well-being, providing an
interdisciplinary perspective. Epictetus’ philosophy emphasizes that fulfilment arises when
individuals align their will with the rational divine order governing the universe. He advocates for
focusing on what is within one’s control—thoughts, judgments, and actions—while accepting
external events with equanimity. His teachings on virtues, such as wisdom, courage, and temperance, provide a foundation for ethical and resilient living. These principles remain highly
relevant for addressing contemporary challenges, fostering inner peace, and cultivating personal
growth. Epictetus’ teachings provide a timeless framework for navigating modern life with clarity
and purpose. Incorporating Stoic principles into personal development programs, leadership
practices, and psychological counselling can offer practical solutions for managing adversity and
achieving well-being. Further interdisciplinary research is recommended to integrate Stoic
philosophy with modern approaches to ethics, resilience, and human flourishing

Abstract: Pulse productivity is very low in some of the sandy soil areas where, soils are having poor water and nutrient holding capacity. To improve the pulse productivity, field experiments were conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Tamil Nadu for two consecutive years to study the effect of phosphorus sources (mono-and diammonium phosphate) with brassinolide and salicylic acid on growth and yield of black gram in sandy loam soils. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with three replications during kharif season. The treatments include 100% recommended dose of NPK along with foliar application of monoammonium phosphate (MAP), diammonium phosphate (DAP), brassinolide (0.25 ppm), and salicylic acid (100 ppm) along with the combination of these treatments. TNAU pulse wonder at 5.0 kg ha −1 and TNAU micronutrient mixture (MN) at 5 kg ha −1 were also tried. The results revealed that application of 100% recommended dose of NPK + DAP 2% + TNAU pulse wonder 5.0 kg ha Additional information is available at the end of the article ABOUT THE AUTHOR S. Marimuthu is as an assistant professor (Agronomy), Krishi Vigyan Kendra (ICAR), in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Vamban, Tamil Nadu, India. He is currently working on research projects such as studies on cotton-based cropping system with NPK levels and bioinoculants; effect of mono-and di-ammonium phosphate with growth regulators and yield of blackgram in sandy loam soils of Cauvery New Delta Zone and INM for yield maximization; economics of blackgram and soil health in Cauvery New Delta Zone as to name a few. Besides, he is also working on TN-IAMWARM project of Development and Adoption of rice transplanter for system of rice intensification and NADP (RKVY) Scheme on Enhancing rice production in salt-affected soils of Tamil Nadu. Apart from this, he is associated in teaching, training and other related activities of the university and also trains the state government department of agriculture staff and also the farmers on improved crop production technologies. PUBLIC INTEREST STATEMENT Some of the soils are having poor water and nutrient holding capacity which leads to decrease in the available nutrient to crops and ultimately result in lower productivity and less profitability to the farmers. Foliar application of water soluble fertilizer nutrient may be the best option to maximize the productivity of any crops in such soils. Under such situation, a field experiment was conducted to assess the impact of nutrients and plant growth regulators on growth and yield of black gram in sandy loam soils of Cauvery new delta zone, India. The results revealed that yield of these pulses can be improved by doing such practice and farmers may be able to reap maximum profitability by adopting this practice. In other words for investment of one additional US dollar the returns will be three US Dollars. By visualizing the impacts, now many of the farmers in the nearby area started adopting this technology for improving the production
