Redesign of a composite sports car to accommodate a battery electric powertrain for type approval in the European Union

    No full text
The goal of this research was to get a better understanding of the consequences of the integration of a battery electric powertrain on the chassis layout and its type approval in the European Union. The Roding Roadster was used as reference throughout this research. Based on the legislation for type approval within the European Union, requirements and tests were extracted which apply to electric passenger cars. Emphasis was placed on the understanding legislation for electric vehicles and estimation of the performance in collision tests.Aerospace EngineeringAerospace Structures & MaterialsDesign and Production of Composite Structure

Party to the Procedure for Setting Prices for Water Services

    No full text
Subject of this paper refers to applying provisions of the Administrative Procedure Code of 14th June 1960 (hereinafter referred to as: A.P.C.) within one of the stages related to determining charges for water services defined in the Water Law Act of 20th July 2017 (hereinafter referred to as: W.L.A.). Author analyses situation in which obliged entity – after the receipt of information determining the amount of charge for water services – upon the lapse of 14 days time limit – has not made the payment and has not submitted complaint. Provisions of the W.L.A. state that in the aforementioned case authority of the National Water Holding ‘Polish Waters’ issues administrative decision determining the amount of charge. Moreover, the aforementioned procedure requires applying provisions of the A.P.C. Amendments related to provisions of the W.L.A. constitute a trigger for further, detailed analysis

Exploring the evolution of biofuel supply chains: An agent-based modeling approach

    No full text
One of the challenges of the twenty-first century is the transition to a sustainable energy system. Road transport biofuels can play an important role in this energy transition. Indeed, biofuels have the largest global share as a mitigation measure in the road transport sector. In 2012, biofuels accounted for 3.4% of global road transport fuel demand (2.3%of total transport fuels). Biofuels are also considered as a promising strategy to decarbonize other transport sectors such as marine and aviation in the short-medium term. Nevertheless, biofuels are not cost competitive compared to fossil fuels and thus require government intervention to stimulate their production and consumption...Energie and Industri

On commensal Ostracoda from the wood-infesting isopod Limnoria

    No full text
Three new ostracod species, each belonging to a new genus, were described by the first author (DE VOS, 1953). They had been found on the body and the legs of Limnoria lignorum, the well-known woodburrowing isopod. Since then, we have been looking for commensals in several new lots of European Limnoria, and in this way we obtained valuable new data on morphology and distribution of two of the three ostracod species described. Moreover, Dr. Robert I. MENZIES, La Jolla, California, kindly sent us a beautiful lot of ostracods from Limnoria tripunctata MENZIES, an isopod species from the Pacific coast of America, found in test-blocks placed at about 7 feet below mean tide level, and collected in the course of the marine wood-borer studies, Project NR 163—084 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, which is supported by the U.S. Office of Naval Research

A critical analysis of risk mitigation measures for target cost contracts in construction industry

    No full text
A scarcity of empirical research has been observed on risk mitigation measures for those construction projects procured by guaranteed maximum price contracts (GMP) and target cost contracts (TCC) worldwide. This paper aims to seek and examine the risk mitigation measures associated with GMP and TCC (GMP/TCC) construction projects through an industry-wide empirical questionnaire survey launched in Hong Kong. Survey respondents were invited to delineate their levels of agreement on 18 individual risk mitigation measures identified from reported literature and in-depth interviews, and the views of client group were compared with those of contractor group. The survey results manifested that both the client group and contractor group are in general consistent in their views towards the risk mitigation measures for GMP/TCC contracts. However, the Mann-Whitney U Test revealed that they held different perceptions on 4 out of the 18 risk mitigation measures, and the findings may stem from different roles involved in the projects. The research findings are useful in providing industrial practitioners with valuable pointers towards effective risk mitigation measures of applying GMP/TCC schemes at an early stage of project delivery

An Alternative Model to Determine the Financing Structure of PPP-Based Young Graduate Apartments in China: A Case Study of Hangzhou

    No full text
Public-private partnerships (PPP) can be employed to provide public rental housing for young graduates, which has been urgent to achieve social sustainability in China. However, few studies have been conducted to investigate the financing structure of PPPs, particularly the ratio of private investment, which is important in initiating a PPP project. This study develops a robust model to determine the financing structure through considering the uncertainties in operation. A case study in Hangzhou demonstrates the process of the model. The relevant findings provide private investors and the local government with effective references for negotiating the financing structure of a PPP project.OTBArchitecture and The Built Environmen

Dysregulation of TrkB receptors and BDNF function by amyloid-β peptide is mediated by calpain

© The Author 2014. Published by Oxford University Press. All rights reserved.Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its high-affinity full-length (FL) receptor, TrkB-FL, play a central role in the nervous system by providing trophic support to neurons and regulating synaptic plasticity and memory. TrkB and BDNF signaling are impaired in Alzheimer's disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disease involving accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide. We recently showed that Aβ leads to a decrease of TrkB-FL receptor and to an increase of truncated TrkB receptors by an unknown mechanism. In the present study, we found that (1) Aβ selectively increases mRNA levels for the truncated TrkB isoforms without affecting TrkB-FL mRNA levels, (2) Aβ induces a calpain-mediated cleavage on TrkB-FL receptors, downstream of Shc-binding site, originating a new truncated TrkB receptor (TrkB-T') and an intracellular fragment (TrkB-ICD), which is also detected in postmortem human brain samples, (3) Aβ impairs BDNF function in a calpain-dependent way, as assessed by the inability of BDNF to modulate neurotransmitter (GABA and glutamate) release from hippocampal nerve terminals, and long-term potentiation in hippocampal slices. It is concluded that Aβ-induced calpain activation leads to TrkB cleavage and impairment of BDNF neuromodulatory actions. This work was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) Grants SFRH/BD/62828/2009 (to A.J.S.) and SFRH/BPD/81627/2011 (to S.H.V.), EU (COST B-30 concerted action), Gabinete de Apoio à Investigação Científica, Tecnológica e Inovação (GAPIC)—15th Programme for Education and Science (to S.P and S.L), and Bayer grant (to A.P.C).
