A Multidisciplinary Mission for Aga Khan Necropolis, the Egyptian Italian Mission at West Aswan (EIMAWA)

Massimiliana Pozzi, deputy director of EIMAWA, the Italian-Egyptian mission in the West of Aswan, presents the first results of the archaeological research conducted in Aswan 2019/2023. EIMAWA is the joint mission of the University of Milan and the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities directed by Patrizia Piacentini and S.M. Abd El-Moneim. An area of 20,000 m2 was investigated in which approximately 300 tombs dating back to between the sixth century BC and the fourth century AD were identified. Five of them have been completely excavated. Until 2019, it was not known where the Aswan burials were in the Late Period. The vast necropolis discovered constitutes a missing link of great historical and cultural importance. Mummies, wooden objects, ceramics, glass, linen “cartonnages”, remains of ancient foods and flowers were found in and around the tombs, requiring a multidisciplinary approach to the excavation and study of the material. Significant activities have already been carried out which, by applying geomatic techniques, forensic and paleopathological analyzes to the study of the mummies, have made it possible to identify the sex, age and circumstances of the death of these people. Chemists and restorers were involved in the team to study the composition of the materials that would allow for their best conservation. “Big Data” experts collaborated with EIMAWA to organize all the information collected during the excavation

The tetracycline resistance gene tet(M) exhibits mosaic structure.

Tetracycline resistance genes of the M class, tet(M), are typically found on mobile genetic elements as the conjugative transposons of gram-positive bacteria. By comparing the sequences of eight different tet(M) genes (from Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Ureaplasma urealyticum, and Neisseria), a mosaic structure was detected which could be traced to two distinct alleles. The two alleles displayed a divergence of 8% and a different G/C content. The block structure of these genes provides evidence for the contribution of homologous recombination to the evolution and the heterogeneity of the tet(M) locus. Unlike described cases of chromosomally located mosaic loci, tet(M) is a relatively recently acquired determinant in the species examined and it would appear that mosaic structure within tet(M) has evolved after acquisition of the gene by the mobile genetic elements upon which it is located

    Flexibility in coordinative behavior of propane-1,3-diamine toward Zn(II) and Cd(II) halides: M(1,3pn)2X2 (M = Zn,Cd; X = Cl,Br,I)

A series of compounds of formula M(1,3pn) 2X 2 (M Zn(II), Cd(II); 1,3pn=propane-1,3-diamine; X Cl, Br, I) has been prepared; two of them (M Zn, X Cl) and (M Cd, X I) have been structurally characterized. The Zn(1,3pn) 2Cl 2 (I) compound crystallizes in the P2 1/c space group, with eight formula units in a cell of dimensions: a=12.833(4), b=16.753(9), c=13.010(4) Å, β=118.88(3) °. The Cd(1,3pn) 2I 2 (II) compound crystallizes in the P2 1/n space group with four formula units. The structures were solved with the heavy-atom method and refined by full matrix least-squares to R and R w values of 0.029 and 0.038, 0.042 and 0.058 for I and II respectively. The asymmetric unit of I consists of a dimeric [Zn- (1,3pn) 2] 2 4+ moiety, where both Zn ions are tetrahedrally coordinated to four nitrogen atoms belonging to one chelating and two bridging 1,3pn ligands. The dimeric moiety generates an infinite chain upon translation of one cell in the direction of the diagonal (1,0,1). The structure of II shows a polymeric arrangement of octahedral Cd atoms sharing both iodine atoms and 1,3pn ligands. The MN stretching vibrations are discussed and assigned in the light of the known structure
