Is Confucianism a Religion or a Secular Moral System?
When asked about the place of religion in their culture, many Chinese people will answer that China is a secular country with no major impact of religion. However, as PETER VAN DER VEER explains in this video, the Chinese are more religious than this perspective suggests and perform many rituals in their daily life. His research shows that this interpretation of Confucianism results from the historical influence of imperialism and the translation of the Western understanding of the terms ‘religious’ and ‘secular’ to an Asian context. Confucianism is being seen as a moral system directly connected to politics rather than a religion as it has no notion of 'god' and is in many other aspects very different from Western concepts of religion
Peter van der Veer “Spirituality in Modern Society” [ 现代社会中的灵性 ], Northwestern Journal of Ethnology , No.75, Spring 2012, pp.115-124. Translation editor: Dan Smyer Yu; Translator: Liang Yan Abstract The argument of this paper is that the spiritual and the secular are produced simultaneously as two connected alternatives to institutionalized religion in Euro-American modernity. The paper also argues that a central contradiction in the concept of spirituality is that it is at the same time seen as universal and as tied to conceptions of national identity. Moreover, while the concept travels globally, its trajectory differs from place to place as it is inserted in different historical developments. The focus of the paper is on India and China in recognition of the fact that Indian and Chinese modernities are a product of interactions with imperial modernity. The relative success of “spirituality” in India and its relative failure in China cannot merely be explained by the rise of communism in China. More deeply it is the conviction that Chinese traditions had to be replaced by Western science that has characterized Chinese modernity long before the Communist take-over, while in India traditions were made into resources in the anti-imperialist struggle against a material modernization that culturally and politically subjected India to Western power

Anemia and erythropoietin in heart failure
Here is a lovely book with bent covers presenting many vignettes of animals. The book is a nostalgic reproduction of 38 fables from a Dialogus Creaturarum of 1480. The woodcuts are charming as they present a variety of creatures in dialogue with each other. To my surprise, only one of the fables is one of those we know well: "The Angler and Small Fish" (27). The typeface is also a throwback to earlier German publishing. I will include Peter Everaers' comments: "Die Zwiesprach der Tiere. München, Verlag der Münchner Drucke, 1923. Original decorated board, 77+1p. Manz A.-G. in München drucken. Nr. 262/550." Some staining in the last pages; boards somewhat discoloured; otherwise a good copy."Language note: German#262 of 550No Autho
Religion, Secularism and National Development in India and China
This article addresses the question of the relationship between religion and national development in India and China. It argues that instead of looking at secularisation as a necessary process in national development, one should focus on secularism as a powerful project of intellectuals and the state in these societies. In the post-colonial period, anti-consumerism in China took the form of Maoist secular utopianism, while in India it took the form of Gandhian religious utopianism. The article argues that religious elements can be found in both Indian and Chinese secularisms
Peter Kaufmann contract with Solomon Sala, March 14, 1831
Indenture contract between Peter Kaufmann of Springfield, Ohio (identified in the contract as being in Columbiana County), and Solomon Sala of Canton, Ohio, concerning the editorship of "a Jackson German Newspaper" (i.e. "Der Vaterlandsfreund"). Kaufmann was indentured to Sala for one year as editor and translator of the newspaper. The contract lays out Kaufmann's duties and what Sala will provide Kaufmann, including food and pay. The contract was witnessed by Saunders Van Rensselaer of Canton, Ohio.
Peter Kaufmann was a German immigrant and intellectual. He arrived first in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1820; in 1826 he became professor of languages at the Harmony Society town of Economy, Pennsylvania. In 1827, Kaufmann led the establishment of Teutonia, a utopian community in Columbiana County, Ohio, and published its weekly titled "Teutonia: The Herald of a Better Time." Following this he moved to Canton, Ohio, where he became translator and editor of "Der Vaterlandsfreund und Geist der Zeit" under Solomon Sala. Additionally, Kaufmann wrote a number of books on education, as well as a German almanac. He was also an influential Democrat, counting President Van Buren among his friends, and knew Ralph Waldo Emerson
