    Pulmonary hypertension in the dog

Canine pulmonary hypertension is a clinical condition that needs to be adequately investigated and recognised because of the lack of specific clinical signs, the potential for rapid and irreversible deterioration of pulmonary vascular function and the development of right-sided heart failure. In recent years, many studies have been published on pulmonary hypertension, improving the understanding of its pathophysiology, the accuracy of diagnostic tests and the management of affected patients. This article provides updated information on pulmonary hypertension and serves as a resource for veterinarians regarding the interpretation of diagnostic tests and the clinical management of affected dogs

Asymptomatic double ureteral stricture in an 8-month-old Maine Coon cat: an imaging-based case report

    No full text
Congenital ureteral strictures are rare both in human and veterinary medicine. While the diagnosis is generally made after a symptomatic or febrile urinary tract infection, we report here a case in which this condition represented an incidental finding during routine ultrasonography. To the best of the authors' knowledge imaging findings of a double monolateral ureteral stricture have not previously been reported

A 4-year-old Kurzhaar dog, was submitted for a not-responding betametasone-treated lameness and altered gait. Physical examination revealed neurologic symptoms due to a peripheral nervous system or a neuro-muscular-plaque disorder. Differential diagnosis considered: traumatic, endocrine, metabolic, infectious, neoplastic and degenerative diseases. CBC, biochemical profile, fT4, cTSH; urinalysis with cortisol/creatinine ratio and serology for E. canis and B. burgdorferi were performed. The diagnostic plan was completed with a spinal, elbow, abdominal and thoracic radiographic examination and an electromyography. Thoracic radiography revealed a lobar atelectasy and a diffuse interstitial-nodular pattern. The other tests were unremarkable. A broncoscopy was performed and Aspergillus fumigatus was cultured following a Bronco-alveolar lavage. A 6 months long treatment with 5mg/Kg/day oral Itraconazole was started. The dog recovered completely without any relapse three months after the end of the treatment

Aim of this study is to evaluate hip dysplasia in the “corso” breed dog using the FCI method. The results confirm that 17% of the dogs evaluated “C” could represent a potential risk for transmission of hereditary features of this pathology

Two-Dimensional and Doppler Echocardiographic findings in healthy non-sedated red-eared slider terrapins (Trachemys scripta elegans)

Echocardiographic evaluation was performed in six healthy young adult non-sedated terrapins (Trachemys scripta elegans). The best imaging quality was obtained through the right cervical window. Base-apex inflow and outflow views were recorded, ventricular size, ventricular wall thickness and ventricular outflow tract were measured, and fractional shortening was calculated. Pulsed-wave Doppler interrogation enabled the diastolic biphasic atrio-ventricular flow and the systolic ventricular outflow patterns to be recorded. The following Doppler-derived functional parameters were calculated: early diastolic (E) and late diastolic (A) wave peak velocities, E/A ratio, ventricular outflow systolic peak and mean velocities and gradients, Velocity-Time Integral, acceleration and deceleration times, and Ejection Time. For each parameter the mean, standard deviation and 95% confidence interval were calculated. Echocardiography resulted as a useful and easy-to-perform diagnostic tool in this poorly known species that presents difficulties during evaluation

Liver function evaluation in dogs by the galactose load test.

Dynamic tests consists in administration of substances metabolised by the liver and in the subsequent study of their kinetics in order to provide quantitative indications about specific hepatic metabolic functions. The aim of the study is to verifiy the reliability of the application of the galactose load test in dogs an to compare the concentration-time curves in healthy animals with those obtained in patients with liver disease. 500 mg/kg of a 30% w/v galactose solution was administred e.v to 5 healthy dogs and to 5 patients with liver disease. Blood samples were collected every 10 minutes until 90 min after injection and serum galactose concentration was determined with an enzimatic method. Serous values for hepathopatic dogs over the T40-T90 period were higher than mean curve values of control dods in 4 out of 5 animals. Further investigations are needed in order to evaluate effective diagnostic and progostic reliability of this test
