The "News" View of Economic Fluctuations: Evidence from Aggregate Japanese Data and Sectoral U.S. Data

    No full text
This paper uses aggregate Japanese data and sectoral U.S. data to explore the properties of the joint behavior of stock prices and total factor productivity (TFP) with the aim of highlighting data patterns that are useful for evaluating business cycle theories. The approach used follows that presented in Beaudry and Portier [2004b]. The main findings are that (i) in both Japan and the U.S., innovations in stock prices that are contemporaneously orthogonal to TFP precede most of the long run movements in total factor productivity and (ii) such stock prices innovations do not affect U.S. sectoral TFPs contemporaneously, but do precede TFP increases in those sectors that are driving U.S. TFP growth, namely durable goods, and among them equipment sectors.

Surgery for rectal prolapse: Orr-Loygue ventral rectopexy with limited dissection prevents postoperative-induced constipation without increasing recurrence

PURPOSE: Abdominal rectopexy is the preferred surgical technique for the treatment of total rectal prolapse. In many reported series, its results are impaired by induced constipation. Lateral rectal ligaments preservation could prevent constipation but increase recurrence rates. We report anatomic and functional results of abdominal Orr- Loygue ventral rectopexy with dissection limited to anterior and posterior rectal wall. METHODS: Consecutive patients with total rectal prolapse or intra-anal rectal prolapse associated to fecal incontinence or outlet obstruction were treated by abdominal rectopexy. Recurrences, correction of symptoms, and induced constipation were prospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Seventy-three patients were treated between 1993 and 2004. Recurrence was observed in 3 of 73 patients (4.1 percent) after a mean follow-up period of 28.6 (range, 6–84) months. Overall patient satisfaction (correction of prolapse, incontinence, and/or outlet obstruction) after the procedure was classified in three categories: Cured: n = 45 (61.6 percent); Improved: n = 24 (32.9 percent); Failure: n = 4 (5.5 percent). Postoperative constipation appeared in 2 of 36 (5.5 percent) preoperatively nonconstipated patients and worsened in 2 of 37 (5.4 percent) preoperatively constipated patients. CONCLUSIONS: Orr-Loygue abdominal ventral rectopexy with limited dissection and preservation of rectal lateral ligaments is a safe and effective procedure for the treatment of complete rectal prolapse, or internal prolapse associated with fecal incontinence or outlet obstruction. Preservation of lateral ligaments seems to prevent postoperative constipation without increasing the risk of prolapse recurrenc

In “Whither News Shocks?”, Barsky, Basu, and Lee (2014) are nicely updating and extending the analysis of Barsky and Sims (2011). They identify a technological news shock as the innovation in the expectation of TFP at a fixed horizon k in the future (typically a few years) that does not affect TFP on impact—that is, the part of Et [TFPt+k] – Et–1[TFPt+k] that is orthogonal to the innovation in TFPt . The main result that I take from their work is, as they clearly state it, that “the impact effects of news shocks clearly does not induce the kind of comovement that is characteristic of business cycles. In most of our specifications, we find that consumption rises when there is good news, but investment, consumer durables purchases and hours worked all fall on impact.” These results echo those of Barsky and Sims (2011), and contradict those of Beaudry and Portier (2006) and Beaudry and Portier (2014). In this comment, I discuss the properties that a news shock should have in order to capture the short-run effect of a shift in expectations. I show, as already acknowledged by Barsky, Basu, and Lee, that their identified shock moves TFP after one or two periods, and therefore mixes changes in expectation and changes in current fundamentals. I then propose to identify a technological diffusion shock,1 and show that in that case, I obtain again a Beaudry and Portier (2006) type of response. I conclude that, if one is mainly interested in measuring the response of the economy to a shift in expectation caused by a technological news, it is important to first check that the identified shock does not move TFP in the short run. When it is so, the news creates a typical aggregate boom

Rb Fe F₄ exhibits a reversible polymorphic transformation at 650° C : Rb Fe F₄α ⇆ Rb Fe F₄β. The crystal structures of the two forms α and ß have been determined. These two structures with very similar lattice energy present (FeF₄)n [with n negative charges] layers of ReO₃ type ; rubidium atoms are inserted between these layers.Rb Fe F₄ présente une transformation allotropique réversible à 650° C : Rb Fe F₄α ⇆ Rb Fe F₄β. Les structures des deux variétés α et ß ont été déterminées. Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
