No full textProfessor Alfredo Falcone and Dr Lisa Salvatore speak to Roshaine Gunawardana, Managing Commissioning Editor: Professor Alfredo Falcone is the Director of the Department of Oncology and the Specialization School at the University Hospital of Pisa, Italy. He trained in Pisa and Genoa, Italy, and has held major positions in Italian oncology since 2000. He currently has more than 300 publications, including papers in peer-reviewed international and national journals, book chapters, and more than 600 abstracts of presentations to international and national conferences. The majority of his papers regard clinical and translational research, with a particular focus on metastatic colorectal cancer. Dr Lisa Salvatore is a medical oncologist in the Department of Translational Research and New Technologies in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pisa. She has been an author on about 40 publications in major peer-reviewed publications and has made numerous presentations in national and international conferences. Her main interest is focused on clinical and translational research in metastatic colorectal cancer

No full textAu XVIe siècle, de nombreux navigateurs européens sillonnent les mers du monde et rapportent des témoignages de leurs explorations, mais une région leur reste impénétrable : l’Asie continentale et le littoral chinois. Pour représenter cet espace de l’Ancien Monde, les cosmographes et les cartographes reprennent les descriptions de voyageurs médiévaux, en particulier celle de Marco Polo parti dans l’empire du grand khan entre 1271 et 1295. L’influence du Devisement du monde sur la période des « Grandes Découvertes », illustrée par le célèbre exemple de Christophe Colomb, est connue. Néanmoins, celle qu’il a exercée dans le contexte français a été sous-estimée car ce texte n’a été publié qu’une seule fois à Paris en 1556. La première partie de cette étude retrace les différentes éditions et traductions du livre de Marco Polo afin d’envisager son actualité renouvelée à la Renaissance. Dans un deuxième temps, nous examinons la circulation de fragments de ce récit dans la cartographie et le champ littéraire français. Principalement assurée par sa présence dans deux grandes collections de récits de voyage, le Novus Orbis (1532) et les Navigationi et viaggi de Ramusio (1559), cette diffusion révèle la place occupée par le Devisement du monde dans les débats géographiques et dans l’imaginaire du XVIe siècle. La troisième partie s’intéresse à l’évolution de l’autorité de Marco Polo entre la fin du XVe siècle et le milieu du XVIIe siècle marqué par l’arrivée de marchands et de missionnaires européens en Chine. Cette période, singulière dans l’histoire des représentations européennes de l’Extrême-Orient, présente le rattachement progressif de ce voyageur médiéval à un temps ancien.In the 16th c., many European navigators brought back evidence of their explorations around the world, but one region remained impenetrable to them: continental Asia and the Chinese coastline. To represent this area of the Old World, cosmographers and cartographers reuse medieval travelers’ descriptions, in particular that of Marco Polo, who left for the Empire of the Great Khan between 1271 and 1295. Famously illustrated by Columbus’s voyages, the influence of the Devisement du monde on the Age of Exploration is known. Nevertheless, its significance in the French context has been underestimated, as the text was published only once in Paris in 1556. The first part of this study traces the different editions and translations of Marco Polo’s book in order to consider its renewed relevance in the Renaissance. In the second part, we examine the dissemination of fragments of this story in the French cartography and literary field. Mainly assured by its presence in two great collections of travel narratives, the Novus Orbis (1532) and Ramusio’s Navigationi et viaggi (1559), this circulation reveals the role played by the Devisement du monde in the geographical debates and in the imagination of the 16th c. The third part focuses on the evolution of Marco Polo’s authority between the end of the 15th c. and the middle of the 17th c., until the arrival of European merchants and missionaries in China. This period, that is unique in the history of European representations of the Far East, presents how the medieval traveler is progressively associated with an ancient time
