Proposing an Architecture for a Cooperative Modeling System
When building adaptive systems, close attention must be paid to management of the user model, to ensure its ability to conform its behavior to the needs of different users. In recent years it has become possible to develop so-called cooperative, or open models. During modeling by interaction the system obtains the necessary information directly from the user by means of a dialog in which the student and tutor (system) build the student model according to a collaborative process. In the present work we describe the overall architecture required for a system to be able to use our cooperative model COSMO, proposed in previous work. The COSMO model has been implemented in a prototype system and experimented at primary school level in the math domain, addressing the learning of fractions. This study describes a first attempt to generalize the architecture of the prototype system developed to test the COSMO model
Supporting Effective Interaction in e-Learning: Towards a Constructivist Approach
In this contribution, we argue in favor of the importance of the role that interaction plays in supporting effective e-learning processes. Interaction among peers, in fact, either with real or virtual companions, is the fundamental component of the process of building and sharing new knowledge. In particular, we intend to argue in favor of a constructivist approach to e-learning. We support our view by reporting on our experience in the design of a platform for language learning through dramatization. Finally, we present the direction we intend to follow in our future research, towards the definition of an approach for enhancing effective interaction during collaborative learning and knowledge sharing in online learning environments
