The complex plank problem
It is shown that if is a sequence of norm in a complex Hilbert space and is a sequence of nonnegative numbers satisfying
then there is a unit vector z for which
$|\langle v_{j}, z \rangle|\geq t_{j}
for every j. The result is a strong, complex analogue of the author's real plank theorem

Morgawr: an experimental Bronze Age-type sewn-plank craft based on the Ferriby boats
Photographs and a link to a video showing the construction and launch of "Morgawr" can also be found in ORE: http://hdl.handle.net/10871/14703This paper reports on the construction of a full-scale Bronze Age-type sewn-plank boat based on the Ferriby boats. The boat, which was named Morgawr, was constructed in the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth, England, during 2012 and the first months of 2013, as part of a larger exhibition in the museum. This paper provides the background and context of the project, describes the process of building the craft, and reflects in particular on differences between Morgawr and the ‘hypothetical reconstruction of a complete sewn-plank boat’ published in 1990 by Ted Wright and John Coates which formed the basis for this project.Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC

America’s Toll Roads Heritage: The Achievements of Private Initiative in the 19th Century
Private toll roads shaped and accommodated trade and migration routes, leaving social and political imprints on the communities that debated and supported them. Private road building came and went in waves throughout the 19th century and across the country. All told, between 2,500 and 3,200 companies successfully financed, built, and operated their toll road. Although most of these roads operated for only a fraction of the 100+ period, the combined mileage of private toll roads that operated at any point in time would be in range of 30,000 to 52,000 miles. The paper explores the character, methods, and purposes of the private toll roads, and draws lessons for the privatization of highways today.toll roads; turnpikes; plank roads; privatization; free riding; regulation
