Letter of concern from Boris Drasin, President of the Jersey Homesteads Industrial Cooperative Association

    No full text
Jersey Homesteads (later renamed the Borough of Roosevelt) was established in the 1930s as an agro-industrial cooperative community. It was established specifically for urban Jewish garment workers, many of whome had emigrated from Europe. In this letter, Boris Drasin, a community leader who was the President of the Jersey Homesteads Industrial Cooperative Association, expresses his concerns to their management corporation (Consumers Wholesale Clothiers, Inc.) about how financial losses will impact the lives of Roosevelt's residents, three-fourths of whom depended on the garment factory for their livelihoods. He makes suggestions as to how the situation might be improved

Random Set Partitions: Asymptotics of Subset Counts

    No full text
AbstractWe study the asymptotics of subset counts for the uniformly random partition of the set [n]. It is known that typically most of the subsets of the random partition are of sizer, withrer=n. Confirming a conjecture formulated by Arratia and Tavaré, we prove that the counts of other subsets are close, in terms of the total variation distance, to the corresponding segments of a sequence {Zj} of independent, Poisson (rj/j!) distributed random variables. DeLaurentis and Pittel had proved that the finite–dimensional distributions of a continuous time process that counts the typical size subsets converge to those of the Brownian Bridge process. Combining the two results allows to prove a functional limit theorem which covers a broad class of the integral functionals. Among illustrations, we prove that the total number of refinements of a random partition is asymptotically lognormal

Long-Run Development and the New Cultural Economics

    No full text
This paper reviews recent economics literature on culture, with an emphasis on its relation to the field of long-run growth and development. It examines the key issues debated in the new cultural economics: causal effects of culture on economic outcomes, the origins and social costs of culture, as well as cultural transmission, persistence, and change. Some of these topics are illustrated in application to the economic analysis of envy-related culture

Making Enterprise Information Systems Resilient Against Disruptive Events: A Conceptual View

    No full text
Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) are designed to deal with normal variability in their inputs and data. Empowered by CONTEXT-AWARENESS, some EIS even count on sensors and/or data analytics for capturing changes outside of the system. Nevertheless, context-awareness would often fail when EIS are affected by (large-scale) disruptive events, such as disasters, virus outbreaks, or military conflicts. Hence, in the current paper, we take a step forward, by considering context-awareness for disruptive events. We combine context-awareness with risk management techniques, such as FMECA and FTA, that are useful for defining and mitigating risk events. To avoid having to define the likelihood for such very-low-probability disruptive risks, we use CONSEQUENCE-BASED RISK MANAGEMENT rather than traditional risk management. We augment this approach with the context-awareness paradigm, delivering a contribution that is two-fold: (i) We propose context-awareness-related measures and consequence-based-risk-management-related measures, to address disruptive events; (ii) We reflect this in a method featuring the application of context-awareness and risk management for designing robust and resilient EIS.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Policy Analysi

Krom procesu vzniku a tvorby text obsahuje také kontextové srovnání, autorčinu osobní výpověď a zhodnocení výsledného díla.OVUObhájenoBachelor´s thesis Illustrated book of fiction in it´s practical part is aimed at conception of illustrations with following realisation of drawings for the book Froth on the Daydream by Boris Vian. In theoretical part the creation process of the book is observed there closely from the first ideas up to whole piece solution. Next part of the thesis is focused on technological process of manufacturing and final realisation of the book and it´s other accessories. Also the context comparison is described there as well as personal statement of the author and evaluation of the final work

Enforcing context-awareness and privacy-by-design in the specification of information systems

Networked physical devices, vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity, allow for run-time acquisition of user data. This in turn can enable information systems which capture the “current” user state and act accordingly. The use of this data would result in context-aware applications that get fueled by user data (and environmental data) to adapt their behavior. Yet the use of data is often restricted by privacy regulations and norms; for example, the location of a person cannot be shared without given consent. In this paper we propose a design approach that allows for weaving context-awareness and privacy-by-design into the specification of information systems. This is to be done since the very early stages of the software development, while the enterprise needs are captured (and understood) and the software features are specified on that basis. In addition to taking into account context-awareness and privacy-sensitivity these two aspects will be balanced, especially if they are conflicting. The presented approach extends the “Software Derived from Business Components” (SDBC) approach. We partially demonstrate our proposed way of modeling, by means of a case example featuring land border security. Our proposed way of modeling would allow developers to smoothly reflect context and privacy features in the application design, supported by methodological guidelines that span over the enterprise modeling and software specification. Those features are captured as technology-independent societal demands and are in the end reflected in technology-specific (software) solutions. Traceability between the two is possible as well as re-use of modeling constructs.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Information and Communication Technolog

Confirming Two Conjectures About the Integer Partitions

    No full text
AbstractFor a given integer n, let Λn denote the set of all integer partitions λ1⩾λ2⩾…⩾λm>0 (m⩾1), of n. For the dominance order “⪯” on Λn, we show that if two partitions λ, μ are both chosen from Λn uniformly at random, and independent of each other, then Pr(λ⪯μ)→0 as n→∞. This statement answers affirmatively a question posed by Macdonald in 1979. The proof is based on the limit joint distribution of the largest parts counts found by Fristedt. A slight modification of the argument confirms a conjecture made by Wilf in 1982, namely that, for n even, the probability of a random partition being graphical is zero in the limit. The proof of the latter follows the footsteps of Erdős and Richmond who saw that to confirm Wilf's conjecture it would be sufficient to show that the probability of the first k Erdős–Gallai conditions of a partition being graphical approaches 0 as n, and then k approach infinity. The reason that the proofs of two seemingly unrelated conjectures turned out to be so close is that, as the E-R analysis revealed, the (joint) distribution of the largest part sizes in a partition λ and its dual λ′ coincides, in the limit, with the distribution of the largest part sizes for two independent partitions
