The Value of Entrepreneurship in the Context of the New Culture of Capitalism
This chapter focuses on the theoretical reasons why the generation of new business ideas and innovative startups has become increasingly important when interpreting business demography related to economic growth. Entrepreneurship in contemporary sociological theory has recognized, from the turn of the new century, a key role for the performance of economic systems, to the point that a neo-entrepreneurial variant of capitalism can be conceptualized. A new model of accumulation—dynamic, changeable and unstable—has been fueled by the search for radical innovation. This transformation has been made possible by new cultural institutions that enhance self-activation and entrepreneurship, supported by socio-technological network connection systems
Digital Cultures, Innovation and Startup. The Contamination Lab Model
The book focuses on the relationships between technological and social innovations, and the new opportunities and challenges that the education system is facing. The authors explore the intertwines between the educational scenarios and the contemporary social, economic and cultural contexts by discussing the Contamination Lab (CLab) experience, which set out in Italian universities with the purpose of promoting entrepreneurial and innovation culture. The cross-fertilization of various disciplines and between the academic and entrepreneurial worlds, in particular, is the starting point of the CLab Naples training model. The CLab Naples was promoted by the University of Naples Federico II, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by digital technologies, the development of scientific and applied research, and the creativity of the youth universe. Since the beginning, its mission has been to bring new skills and promote the creation of innovative enterprises or startups, starting from the relevant technological and cultural transformations that today are affecting both the workplace and knowledge. The experience of the CLab Naples stands as a powerful link between research and enterprises, laboratory and territory, education and jobs, creative innovation and the development of new digital technologies
The analysis of two novels from the 1920s selected as emblematic cases – Le Monde désert by Jouve and La Mort difficile by Crevel – leads the author to point out the connections between the figuration of the subject in literature and the portrait in painting. Indeed, the survival of the portrait itself as a pictorial genre can be seen as a sign of its involvement in the enquiry of identity and subjectivity. This article describes the three main axes that organise subjectivity as a portrait: the fluctuation between stasis and movement, the relational dimension and the fictional one. The portrait becomes the ideal model of a subject conceived as the result of a creative process. Hence, painting is not to be considered a mere narrative theme but a key to the interpretation of the novels and a metaphor of the construction of the subject
Accident Triggered by Electrical Failures in Seveso Sites
Electrical maintenance is important for appropriate of Major Accident Prevention Policy MAPP at Seveso sites. At Seveso sites, many accidents include in the causes an electrical failure, due usually to a poor maintenance. Power outages, in particular, originate cascade effects, leading to a possible loss of hazardous materials. The repository of the minor incidents and near misses recorded at Seveso sites is a valuable source for investigating electrical failures, causes, effects and possible prevention and mitigation measures. The present paper discusses a number of incident records, gathered at Seveso establishments, during the mandatory inspections, required by the Seveso Directive. Gathered documents cover different types of plant, including refineries, oil terminal, LPG depots and chemical plants. They have been analysed, using advanced method, including machine learning. The results of this analysis have been exploited to provide the establishments’ operator with a few recommendations, essential to improve electrical safety and prevent major accidents

His multifaceted nature as a engaged intellectual has also led him to actively deal with cultural and university politics and dissemination
HisTOOLogy: an open-source tool for quantitative analysis of histological sections.
HisTOOLogy is an open-source software for the quantification of digital colour images of histological sections. The simple graphical user interface enables both expert and non-expert users to rapidly extract useful information from stained tissue sections. The software's main feature is a generalizable colour separation algorithm based on k-means clustering which accurately and reproducibly returns the amount of colour per unit area for any stain, thus allowing the quantification of tissue components. Here we describe HisTOOLogy's algorithms and graphical user interface structure, showing how it can be used to separate different dye colours in several classical stains. In addition, to demonstrate how the tool can be employed to obtain quantitative information on biological tissues, the effect of different hepatic tissue decellularization protocols on cell removal and matrix preservation was assessed through image analysis using HisTOOLogy and compared with conventional DNA and total protein content assays. HisTOOLogy's performance was also compared with ImageJ's colour deconvolution plug-in, demonstrating its advantages in terms of ease of use and speed of colour separation
