Recovery time profiling after short-, middle-and long-distance swimming performance

J Strength Cond Res 33(5): 1408-1415, 2019-We investigated cardiac autonomic responses and hemodynamic parameters on recovery time after short-, middle- and long-swimming performance. Ten male regional-level swimmers were tested to estimate time and frequency domains of arterial baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and heart rate variability after 100, 200, and 400 m of front crawl. We found a BRS reduction for 90 minutes after a maximal 100- and 200-m front crawl event, meanwhile the reflex was restored back to the baseline value approximately 70 minutes after 400 m. The vagally mediated high-frequency power of R-R intervals was significantly reduced for 30 minutes after 400 m, and more than 90 minutes after 100 and 200 m, with a concomitant increase of sympathetic modulation. After 400 m, athletes have reduced their stroke volume for 50 minutes, which remained at the baseline level after 100 and 200 m. Heart rate was restored back after 90 minutes in all conditions, whereas total peripheral vascular resistance was significantly reduced for 50 minutes after 200 and 400 m, with a persistent reduction after 100 m. Time course of autonomic recovery after 3 different swimming performances is influenced by exercise intensity and duration, showing a rapid recovery after 400 m, an intermediate recovery after 200 m, and a significantly delayed recovery after a more strictly anaerobic performance like 100 m of front crawl. These results could encourage coaches to consider that athlete might be affected by the specific recovery time of the previous exercise performed, suggesting that the management of the exercise intensity, and appropriate monitoring of cardiac autonomic parameters might be helpful to know the physical condition of each athlete

Abstract
The oxidation of organosulphides catalysed by hydrogen bonding donors derived from aminotetrazole has been studied. The oxidation reaction was performed in a H2O solution using H2O2 as a versatile, green and chemoselective new approach to sulphoxides. Sulphoxide compounds are obtained in high yields and excellent selectivity through a new and easy to perform oxidation protocol. Aminotetrazole derivatives can be recycled by filtration and reused several times without expensive purification procedures

Brain connectivity changes after osteopathic manipulative treatment: A randomized manual placebo-controlled trial
The effects of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) on functional brain connectivity in healthy adults is missing in the literature. To make up for this lack, we applied advanced network analysis methods to analyze resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, after OMT and Placebo treatment (P) in 30 healthy asymptomatic young participants randomized into OMT and placebo groups (OMTg; Pg). fMRI brain activity measures, performed before (T0), immediately after (T1) and three days after (T2) OMT or P were used for inferring treatment effects on brain circuit functional organization. Repeated measures ANOVA and post-hoc analysis demonstrated that Right Precentral Gyrus (F (2, 32) = 5.995, p < 0.005) was more influential over the information flow immediately after the OMT, while decreased betweenness centrality in Left Caudate (F (2, 32) = 6.496, p < 0.005) was observable three days after. Clustering coefficient showed a distinct time-point and group effect. At T1, reduced neighborhood connectivity was observed after OMT in the Left Amygdala (L-Amyg) (F(2, 32) = 7.269, p < 0.005) and Left Middle Temporal Gyrus (F(2, 32) = 6.452, p < 0.005), whereas at T2 the L-Amyg and Vermis-III (F(2, 32) = 6.772, p < 0.005) increased functional interactions. TOF-SIMS PCA ANALYSIS OF Myrtus communis L.
Nowadays there is a growing interest of researchers for the application of sophisticated analytical
techniques in conjunction with statistical data analysis methods to the characterization of natural
products to assure their authenticity and quality, and for the possibility of direct analysis of food to
obtain maximum information. In this work, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS)
in conjunction with principal components analysis (PCA) are applied to study the chemical composition
and variability of Sardinian myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) through the analysis of both berries alcoholic
extracts and berries epicarp. ToF-SIMS spectra of berries epicarp show that the epicuticular waxes
consistmainly of carboxylic acids with chain length ranging from C20 to C30, or identical species formed
from fragmentation of long-chain esters. PCA of ToF-SIMS data from myrtle berries epicarp distinguishes
two groups characterized by a different surface concentration of triacontanoic acid. Variability in
antocyanins, flavonols, a-tocopherol, and myrtucommulone contents is showed by ToF-SIMS PCA

Professional and personal experiences of workplace violence among Italian mental health nurses: A qualitative study
Background: Violence against healthcare workers in psychiatric settings is a concern in the literature. Violence effects for healthcare professionals and organizations include an absence from work due to injury or illness, a decreased job satisfaction, and a lower quality of work. The aim of this study is to identify the consequences of violence on the health, work habits, and performance of nurses working with psychiatric patients. Methods: The study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 18 nurses from different hospitals and territorial psychiatric settings in Southern Italy. The interviews were conducted from July to December 2020 by telephone and were recorded with the consent of the participants. The collected data were transcribed and analyzed. Results: The narratives revealed five main themes: (1) Feelings about the violence experienced; (2) the effects of violent incidents on nurses; (3) features of the mental health setting related to the phenomenon of the assault; (4) the care and organizational aspects to prevent the assault; and (5) the care in psychiatric settings during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aggressions resulted in a change in the nurses’ work habits and performances; they were more careful after the aggression and modified their approach to the patient. Additionally, the nurses discussed developing skills and strategies to protect themselves and avoid aggression. Conclusions: Aggression has a negative impact on the health and work performance of nurses. Adopting personal and nursing strategies in place to prevent aggression allows them to improve the patient care and to protect themselves from such incidents. The creation of a safer work environment by healthcare organizations in which professionals work can improve their health, job performance, and the effectiveness of psychiatric nursing care
