The Sufi Shaykh and His Patients: Merging Islam, Psychoanalysis, and Western Esotericism
Gabriele Mandel (1926-2010), an Italian with Afghan distant roots, was a charismatic khalīfa (local leader) and the founder of the first Jerrahi-Halveti tekke (a Sufi lodge) in Milan. Mandel was a university professor, an artists, a psychoanalyst, a Freemason, and a Sufi, representing in one individual many elements of European Sufism; such as: the Islam of migrants, who transplanted their practices and social life in a new country; Western esotericism; the cultic milieu; and academic research on mysticism and religions
SUFISM IN EUROPE: Islam, Esotericism and the New Age
Sufism, the spiritual, mystical, and esoteric dimension of Islam, is experiencing a renewal in the 21st century. Charismatic Sufi masters have been able to revitalise their language, attracting new disciples and going beyond their cultural-geographic framework. This book describes the development of Sufism in Western Europe, particularly in France and Italy, through extended empirical research based on participant observation in four Sufi orders. The author illustrates the different forms of hybridisation between the Islamic-Sufi tradition and Western esoteric discourses, in particular the Guénonian-Traditionalist and the New Age discourse. These hybridisations often involve the creation of new doctrines, rituals, and organizational structures, and produce different universalist discourses, which imply different Sufi politics in Europe, such as a lack of interest due to an imminent eschatology, civic engagement, and metapolitical elitism
The essay starts from the recent judgment of the Sezioni unite of the Court of Cassation on the inclusion of interests for non performance within the scope of the figure of usury so called in the abstract. The answer given by the Sezioni unite is positive and it must be fully shared. The arguments in support of this conclusion, however, are totally wrong and they cause alarm because they are clearly contra legem

A female imam in Paris: Islam, gender, and secular normativity
This article discusses Kahina Bahloul's political and religious engagement and her project to create the liberal 'Fatima Mosque', founded in 2019 in Paris. Bahloul is a complex figure, and her political and religious project touches on several dimensions: she was inspired by Sufi doctrines (Ibn 'Arabi and the 'Alawiyya) and Islamic modernist philosophy (Mohammed Arkoun). Furthermore, she advocates for a liberal and secular Islam, proposing radical reform and implying the compliance with secular constraints, the merging of social sciences with Islamic sciences, and the polarisation between liberal Muslims and 'fundamentalist' Muslims. This article will show that 1) Sufism is mainly used to justify an individualistic approach to Islam; 2) Bahloul's epistemological hybridity, based on Islam and social sciences, implies a strong tension between her role as a scholar and as a religious authority; and 3) Bahloul's reform of Islam is not new or radical. The peculiarity of her political and religious project is her compliance with the whimsical French debate on Islam and laicite, which implies accepting new bans, the privatisation of Islam, and the polarisation between 'good Muslims' and 'bad Muslims'

Sufism in Latin Europe
The current chapter describes global trends that affect Sufism prior to framing
them in local contexts. Although the abovementioned sources of Latin
European Sufism are similar across all Western countries, their outcomes often
differ in diverse local settings. In order to comprehend both the complexity
and common trends among different countries, we discuss Sufism in Latin
Europe using eight categories: (1) de-Islamized Sufism; (2) Western esoteric
Sufism; (3) erudite Sufism; (4) transplanted Sufism; (5) anti-modern Sufism;
(6) fragmented Sufism; (7) engaged Sufism; and (8) public Sufism. These categories
are ideal types (Weber) that could serve as useful instruments in comprehending
multifaceted phenomena. The order in which these categories
will be presented is both chronological and thematic
Information asymmetry in the agri-food sector and territorial marks: The case of the olive oil Val di Mazara PDO
This article analyzes the importance of information in the agri-food market, since the presence of information asymmetry favors market failure. This analysis ex-amines the information asymmetry in the agri-food market and its geographical brands, PDO and PGI, focusing on the Sicilian oil sector of the olive oil Val di Mazara PDO. A quality product has specific organoleptic characteristics that give it flavors, fragrances and various nutritional properties. To protect this, there are the brands that are essential to avoid that between sellers and consumers there is information asymmetry and consequently the failure of the market. In fact, through this analysis are examined the evolution of the reference legislation, consisting of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and Directive (EU) 2015/2436, which represent the result of long negotiations undertaken by the institutions of the European Union with the aim of modernizing the European system of trademark protection. Proceeding with the analysis examined the case of the olive oil Val di Mazara PDO. The legislator has created the PDO territorial brand which, however, is not used by farm. This situation determines a lack of valorization of the product and an impoverishment of the territory. The impact is also at the level of gastronomy, the olive oil of dubious quality are preferred over certified oil. In the present study the Val di Mazara PDO was analyzed. In particular, through the Economic Theory we have verified that the information asymmetry hinders the diffusion of the Val di Mazara PDO and determines the market failure and the lack of valorization of olive oil
