The Sufi Shaykh and His Patients: Merging Islam, Psychoanalysis, and Western Esotericism
Gabriele Mandel (1926-2010), an Italian with Afghan distant roots, was a charismatic khalīfa (local leader) and the founder of the first Jerrahi-Halveti tekke (a Sufi lodge) in Milan. Mandel was a university professor, an artists, a psychoanalyst, a Freemason, and a Sufi, representing in one individual many elements of European Sufism; such as: the Islam of migrants, who transplanted their practices and social life in a new country; Western esotericism; the cultic milieu; and academic research on mysticism and religions
On the larva and the zooid of the pterobranch Rhabdopleura recondita Beli, Cameron and Piraino, 2018 (Hemichordata, Graptolithina)
Hemichordates (Enteropneusta and Pterobranchia) belong to a small deuterostome invertebrate group that may offer insights on the origin and evolution of the chordate nervous system. Among them, the colonial pterobranch Rhabdopleuridae are recognized as living representatives of Graptolithina, a taxon with a rich fossil record. New information is provided here on the substrate selection and the life cycle of Rhabdopleura recondita Beli, Cameron and Piraino, 2018, and for the first time, we describe the nervous system organization of the larva and the adult zooid, as well as the morphological, neuroanatomical and behavioural changes occurring throughout metamorphosis. Immunohistochemical analyses disclosed a centralized nervous system in the sessile adult zooid, characterized by different neuronal subsets with three distinct neurotransmitters, i.e. serotonin, dopamine and RFamide. The peripheral nervous system comprises GABA-, serotonin-, and dopamine-immunoreactive cells. These observations support and integrate previous neuroanatomical findings on the pterobranch zooid of Cephalodiscus gracilis. Indeed, this is the first evidence of dopamine, RFamide and GABA neurotransmitters in hemichordates pterobranchs. In contrast, the lecithotrophic larva is characterized by a diffuse basiepidermal plexus of GABAergic cells, coupled with a small group of serotonin-immunoreactive cells localized in the characteristic ventral depression. It is envisaged the use of R. recondita as a novel and easily accessible hemichordate model organism to shed light on the evolution of hemichordates and more generally on the origin of deuterostome developmental mechanisms
SUFISM IN EUROPE: Islam, Esotericism and the New Age
Sufism, the spiritual, mystical, and esoteric dimension of Islam, is experiencing a renewal in the 21st century. Charismatic Sufi masters have been able to revitalise their language, attracting new disciples and going beyond their cultural-geographic framework. This book describes the development of Sufism in Western Europe, particularly in France and Italy, through extended empirical research based on participant observation in four Sufi orders. The author illustrates the different forms of hybridisation between the Islamic-Sufi tradition and Western esoteric discourses, in particular the Guénonian-Traditionalist and the New Age discourse. These hybridisations often involve the creation of new doctrines, rituals, and organizational structures, and produce different universalist discourses, which imply different Sufi politics in Europe, such as a lack of interest due to an imminent eschatology, civic engagement, and metapolitical elitism
A female imam in Paris: Islam, gender, and secular normativity
This article discusses Kahina Bahloul's political and religious engagement and her project to create the liberal 'Fatima Mosque', founded in 2019 in Paris. Bahloul is a complex figure, and her political and religious project touches on several dimensions: she was inspired by Sufi doctrines (Ibn 'Arabi and the 'Alawiyya) and Islamic modernist philosophy (Mohammed Arkoun). Furthermore, she advocates for a liberal and secular Islam, proposing radical reform and implying the compliance with secular constraints, the merging of social sciences with Islamic sciences, and the polarisation between liberal Muslims and 'fundamentalist' Muslims. This article will show that 1) Sufism is mainly used to justify an individualistic approach to Islam; 2) Bahloul's epistemological hybridity, based on Islam and social sciences, implies a strong tension between her role as a scholar and as a religious authority; and 3) Bahloul's reform of Islam is not new or radical. The peculiarity of her political and religious project is her compliance with the whimsical French debate on Islam and laicite, which implies accepting new bans, the privatisation of Islam, and the polarisation between 'good Muslims' and 'bad Muslims'

Intorno alla responsabilità precontrattuale, al dolo incidente e a una recente sentenza giusta ma erroneamente motivata
The essay analyzes the issues of pre-contractual liability and incident fraud, moving by the Corte di Cassazione judgment in the case CIR vs Fininvest. The author believes that the judgment is correct in the decision, but wrong in the reasoning because of the reference to the torts. The correct approach would have been that which refers to the pre-contractual liability, with regard to which the author argues for the qualification as a form of contractual liability. In particular, the unfair conduct of Fininvest represents an incident fraud, which is the only hypothesis of pre-contractual liability characterized by damages which approach to the expectation interest
Le prassi contra legem e la conclusione del contratto: le «prestazioni non richieste»
The essay deals with the issue of the unsolicited provisions of goods and services regulated by the article 27 of the Directive 2011/83/EU and 66-quinquies of the Italian Consumer Code. In the first section, the unsolicited provisions are examined with regard to the general contract law and the author recognises that they may be determinant to conclude the contract, when certain conditions apply. By contrast, in the second section the author takes into account the consumer law and he concludes differently. In fact, also considering the unfair trade practices, the unsolicited provisions are defined by the legislator as non-binding. Therefore, the author suggests that the unsolicited provisions are not determinant to reach the agreement even though the consumer accepts them expressively, due to their non-binding nature. Accordingly, the unsolicited provisions may be considered forbidden because of the hazardous nature of this form of commercialisation of goods and service
