    Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for local staging before salvage radical prostatectomy: a meta-analysis

    PurposeThe reliability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a local and nodal staging tool in radio-recurrent prostate cancer (PCa) is still unclear. The present study aims at evaluating the predictive value of MRI in the detection of extracapsular extension (ECE), seminal vesical invasion (SVI) and nodal involvement (LNI) in patients after primary radio (EBRT) and/or brachytherapy (BT) before salvage radical prostatectomy (SRP).MethodsThis systematic review and meta-analysis were performed in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were systemically reviewed to extract the data on diagnostic performance of MRI in radio-recurrent PCa.ResultsFour studies comprising 94 radio-recurrent PCa patients were included. The pooled prevalence of ECE, SVI, and LNI was 61%, 41%, and 20%, respectively. The pooled sensitivity for ECE, SVI and LNI detection was 53% (CI 95% 19.8-83.6%), 53% (CI 95% 37.2-68%) and 33% (CI 95% 4.7-83.1%) respectively, whereas specificity was 75% (CI 95% 40.6-92.6%), 88% (CI 95% 71.7-95.9%) and 92% (CI 95% 79.6-96.8%). The sensitivity analysis revealed that a single outlying study using only T2-weighted imaging instead of multiparametric MRI reported significantly higher sensitivity with significantly lower specificity.ConclusionsThis is the first meta-analysis reporting reliability of staging MRI in a radio-recurrent setting. MRI provides poor sensitivity while maintaining high specificity for local and nodal staging before SRP. However, current evidence is limited to the low number of heterogenous studies at meaningful risk of bias

    W recenzji książki monograficznej ks. Stefana Radziszewskiego pt. Kamińska ostiumiczna (‘Kamieńska w odrzwiach’) omówiono krótko jej strukturę, zawartość (treść) i konkluzje twórcy dzieła. Książka dotyczy opisu i analizy poezji polskiej poetki chrześcijańskiej Anny Kamieńskiej (1920-1986). Autor monografii objął badaniem całą twórczość poetycką tej poetki (wszystkie tomiki wierszy). Ks. Radziszewski wprowadził kategorię ‘ostiumiczności’, którą rozumie czworako (definiuje to na s. 238): 1. dziedzictwo poetyki quasi sacrum, 2. negacja negacji (interpretacja symboliczna), 3. swoiste odczytanie apokastasis panton [odnowienia całego bytu], 4. realizacja idei paschalnej.In his review of the monographic book by father Stefan Radziszewski Ostiumic Kamienska (‘Kamienska in the door’) the author briefly discussed the structure, content and conclusions of this work. The book is concerned with the description and analysis of the poetry of Anna Kamienska (1920-1986) a Polish Christian poet. In his monograph Stefan Radziszewski dealt with all of Kamienska’s poetic works. He introduced the category ‘ostiumicsness’ that he understood in four ways (he defined it on p. 238): 1. heritage of the ‘quasi sacred ‘ poetics, 2. the negation of negation (a symbolic interpretation), 3. specific re-reading of apokatastasis panton [renewal of all the being], 4. realization of the paschal idea

    Ignacy Dominik Radziszewski (1782–1853) and his Family

    Polish landed gentry was once the backbone of national tradition. Every family had among its members land owners, officers, priests, lawyers, and public servants. Ignacy Dominik Radziszewski (1782–1853) followed this tradition. He lead the life of a typical nobleman, though enriched by numerous events connected with the stormy history of Poland. Ignacy Radziszewski was above all a patriot ready to serve the highest values. This is why he took part in Napoleon’s campaigns, in the uniform of a Polish officer, and later helped to mobilise the armed forces during the November Uprising. Earlier, he studied law, which later in his life allowed him to achieve the honourable title of magistrate in his district. The author of this article also mentions other people connected with Radziszewski in different ways, beginning with friendly and familiar relationships, and ending in the professional ones. The historical sources which constitute a base for these reflections have been examined very carefully. This has allowed to display some genealogical intricacies concerning also persons who were not the protagonists of the events here related. These discoveries may result useful to the authors of future studies on the history of the land gentry of the Solec district.Ziemiaństwo było niegdyś ostoją tradycji narodowej. Każda rodzina miała w swym gronie właścicieli dóbr, oficerów, duchownych, prawników czy urzędników publicznych. Nie inaczej było z Ignacym Dominikiem Radziszewskim (1782–1853). Jego droga życiowa była typowa dla szlachcica, jakkolwiek wzbogacona o liczne wydarzenia związane z burzliwymi dziejami Polski. Ignacy Radziszewski był przede wszystkim patriotą gotowym zawsze służyć w imię najwyższych wartości. Stąd jego udział w walkach prowadzonych przez Napoleona w mundurze oficera wojska polskiego, a później działania na rzecz organizacji sił zbrojnych w dniach Powstania Listopadowego. Wcześniej uczył się prawa, co po latach przyniosło mu zaszczytny tytuł sędziego pokoju w jego powiecie. W artykule pojawiają się inne osoby i osobistości związane z Radziszewskim. Wzajemne ich kontakty mają różnoraki charakter, począwszy od towarzyskich czy rodzinnych, a skończywszy na zawodowych. Baza źródłowa stanowiąca podstawę rozważań spenetrowana została bardzo starannie i dała przez to możliwość ukazania zawiłości genealogicznych związanych z osobami pojawiającymi się również na drugim planie relacjonowanych wydarzeń. Być może będzie to pomocne przy powstawaniu kolejnych opracowań na temat dziejów ziemiaństwa w powiecie soleckim

    Modified asphalt mixtures resistance to permanent deformations

    Permanent deformations, primarily in the form of ruts, are one of the basic asphalt pavement damages impairing its service properties. Application of appropriate asphalt mixtures and binder modification are effective methods for improving asphalt courses resistance. While being manufactured, stored, fitted into a road pavement and during long term service, bitumen binders and asphalt mixtures are subject to continuous unfavourable ageing processes during which pavement courses characteristics change considerably, resistance to permanent deformations being among them. This article presents rut and dynamic creep test results of concrete, SMA (stone mastic asphalt), MNU (thin courses of non‐continuous grain mixtures), Superpave mixture and porous asphalt mixture of two air void content percentages: 15 %, 20 %. Asphalt concrete mixtures, MNU's and porous asphalt mixtures contained elastomer, plastomer and fine rubber modified binders. Samples for laboratory rut tests were made by slab compaction because this method, as the author's previous research had shown, was the closest to ‘in‐situ’ conditions. Resistance to permanent deformations of the examined specimens was evaluated before aging, after technological aging (short term ageing) and after service ageing (long‐term ageing). The test results show that resistance to permanent deformations depends on the kind of asphalt mixture and binder applied. Concrete asphalts with fine rubber modified bitumens and concrete asphalts with 7 % polymer modified binders as well as SMA's and Superpave mixtures with unmodified binders appeared to be most resistant to permanent deformations after a long‐term laboratory ageing. It was proved that the overall evaluation of resistance to permanent deformations could be obtained by rut and creep testing of asphalt mixtures exposed to short‐ and long‐term ageing. Simultaneous determining 4 parameters: maximum rut depth after short‐term ageing, rutting coefficient after operational ageing, stiffness creeping modulus after long‐term ageing and cumulated deformation after short‐term ageing, facilitates full characteristics of modified asphalt mixes designed to be built in the wearing course of a road pavement. Modifikuotų asfalto mišinių atsparumas liekamosioms deformacijoms Santrauka Provėžas paliekančios liekamosios deformacijos yra viena iš dažniausių pažaidų, bloginančių eksploatacines kelio dangos savybes. Naudojant tam tikrą asfalto mišinio ir rišiklio modifikaciją, efektyviai galima gerinti asfalto savybes. Gamybos, tiekimo, klojimo bei ilgalaikės eksploatacijos metu bituminiuose rišikliuose bei asfalto mišiniuose nenutrūkstamai vyksta neigiami senėjimo procesai, kurie lemia esmingą savybių, tarp jų ir atsparumo liekamosioms deformacijoms, kaitą. Straipsnyje pateikiami betono, SMA (skaldos, mastikos, asfaltbetonio), MNU (plonų nevientisos struktūros sluoksnių), Superpave (aukštos kokybės asfaltbetonio) mišinių ir 15 % bei 20 % tuštumingumo poringojo asfalto provėžų ir dinaminiai valkšnumo tyrimų rezultatai. Asfaltbetonio, MNU ir poringojo asfalto mišiniai buvo su elastomeriniais, plastomeriniais bei smulkios gumos modifikuotais rišikliais. Bandiniai laboratoriniams provėžų bandymams buvo gaminami sutankinant asfalto plokštes, nes, kaip parodė ankstesni autoriaus tyrimai, šis metodas labiausiai atitinka realias klojimo sąlygas. Atsparumo liekamosioms deformacijoms tyrimai atlikti prieš senėjimą, po technologinio (trumpalaikio) senėjimo bei eksploatacinio (ilgalaikio) senėjimo. Bandymų rezultatai parodė, kad atsparumas liekamosioms deformacijoms priklauso nuo asfalto mišinio ir rišiklio. Nustatyta, kad asfaltbetonio mišiniai, turintys smulkios gumos bitumų, asfaltbetonio mišiniai, turintys 7 % polimerais modifikuotų rišiklių, SMA bei Superpave mišiniai, turintys nemodifikuotų rišiklių, po ilgalaikio senėjimo laboratorijos sąlygomis yra atspariausi liekamosioms deformacijoms. Įrodyta, kad bendras atsparumo liekamosioms deformacijoms vertinimas gali būti atliktas, taikant trumpalaikio bei ilgalaikio senėjimo veikiamų asfalto mišinių provėžų ir valkšnumo bandymus. Vienu metu apskaičiuojami 4 parametrai – maksimalus provėžų gylis po trumpalaikio senėjimo, provėžų koeficientas po klojimo senėjimo, valkšnumo modulis po ilgalaikio senėjimo ir suminės deformacijos po trumpalaikio senėjimo – palengvina nustatyti modifikuotų, kelio dangoms skirtų asfalto mišinių sudėtį.     Fatigue Life of Asphalt Pavements on Bridge Decks

    AbstractPavement is one of the basic elements of a bridge structure. In Europe and Poland pavements for engineering objects are made in the asphalt technology. Requirements for ensuring the sustainability of the entire object also refer to pavement. Fatigue life is one of the parameter that must be satisfy but there is no requirements connected with it. It is directly related to the stresses and strains which occur in the pavement. Based on a state of art and using calculation results of software with finite element method (FEM) the strains in characteristic points of the bridge pavement were presented. Strains in pavements on the soil, concrete and steel deck were compared. One of the classic and one of the modern criteria for fatigue life were described. Calculation models for fatigue life of asphalt pavement does not classify separately bridge pavements. A typical technology and materials used in the bridge deck pavements were presented. Fatigue life of asphalt bridge pavements were estimated. The analysis of the results and evaluation of the adequacy of fatigue life models were made

    Use of Aggregate From Glacier Deposits in High-Traffic Asphalt Pavements: a Polish Experience

    An on-going Polish nation-wide program of construction and re-construction of roads requires a large quantity of aggregate. Aggregate from consolidated rock formations (for the road application) are produced only in the south-west part of Poland. The cost of material transportation from the south to the north or central part of Poland is often higher than the material value itself. In the eastern part of Poland aggregate from glacial deposits was shown to yield high performance crushed aggregate for construction purposes, although they are not widely used in hot mix asphalt (HMA) construction currently. In this paper results from the tests conducted on HMA surface and base layers using aggregate from glacial deposits are presented. HMA samples, asphalt concrete and stone mastic asphalt were designed and tested for rutting. In addition, the cost analysis was conducted in order to compare construction cost for HMA with aggregates from various regions and geological formations. Test results proved that aggregates from the glacier deposits could, indeed, be used for the structural layers in the asphalt pavements
