Harold Pinter is one of the most important writers in English of the late twentieth century and early twenty-first century. This brief biography offers fresh insights into his life and work, concentrating on the themes, patterns, relationships, ideas and language common to his life and creative output. Placing Pinter's life and work alongside each other, the study illuminates Pinter's vision of society, politics, gender, sex, violence and human relationships. Drawing upon the full-range of his work, his letters, journalism, and writings about him, Baker combines a biographical approach with close (re)readings of his work to create a fresh perspective on his life and art. The book offers students, academics and readers a rich depiction of Harold Pinter, the man and the writer.Intro -- Contents -- Acknowledgements -- Introduction -- 1. Growing Up -- 2. Harold Pinter and the Performance of Power: Considerations of Affect in Select Plays, Screenplays and Films, Poetry and Political Speeches

    No full text
This thesis looks at selections of Harold Pinter's work across multiple media: written dramatic texts, screenplays and poetry, activity in theatrical and film production and his political activism. It has been argued that Pinter's dramatic medium is exceeded by movements, intensities and forces that operate on and circulate within the corporeal bodies of Pinter's 'audiences'. However, approaches to Pinter to date remain overly focused on representation and hermeneutics and tied to a decidedly idealist conception of being, perception and knowledge. I argue that in order to appreciate the politics of Pinter's aesthetics, readings of Pinter's work need to move in a more decidedly materialist direction. To do so, I enlist the conceptual tools of Gilles Deleuze and felix Guattari, specifically 'affect'. In bringing affect theory to Pinter I illustrate how 'the direct, mutual involvement of language and extra-linguistic forces,1 must be taken into account at every critical step, and that meaning need be construed as a material process, the expression of forces acting upon each other. The diversity of Pinter's work is explored over six chapters with a view to its aesthetic disposition and function, how it enters into noteworthy relations with those who engage with it, and how it establishes conditions that are propitious for transitory but ultimately productive trans formative encounters. Proceeding as such necessitates appraisal of ethical and political positions in relation to Pinter's expression without distinguishing politics from aesthetics - a trend common to intellectual enterprise. Rather, the three keywords in the title of this thesis - performance, power and affect - function as concepts to advance the argument for Pinter's aesthetics as a politics. In considering the aesthetics of Pinter's work in varied media, this thesis invites the reader to see the strategies by which Pinter intervenes in each area as interrelated and political

The main focus of this thesis is the employment position of sportsmen. A particular attention is paid to the elements of the employment relationship, according to Article 4 of The Labour Codewhether they exist in the relationship between sportsman and sports club and whether sportsmen should be given the status of workers. The author establishes that the specificity of sport, as sport constitutes a specific social activity, should be taken into account. Therefore some of the rights and obligations, derived from the employment relationship, should be regulated differently for sportsmen to establish a possibility to enter into employment contracts in accordance with current legislation. Later on, legal regulation of sportsmen of the European Union is presented - the thesis also analyses cases of the European Court of Justice in the field of sports, which are related to the free movement of workers and prohibition of discrimination. Moreover, the legal regulation of sportsmen in particular European Union member states is presented

The Concept of "Self" in Some Plays by Ibsen, Strindberg, Beckett, Osborne, and Pinter

PhDCentring on Peer Gynt's onion as a symbol of modern man's "dissolved" self, this thesis is a study of the changing concept of "self" and its effect on the development of dramatic technique from Ibsen's Brand and Peer Gynt, through Strindberg's "dream plays, " to the plays of the three most influential post-war British playwrights, Beckett, Osborne, and Pinter. The aim of this comparative study is not to "prove" direct influence, but to demonstrate affinities and to trace the continuing process of the "dissolving self" from Brand's monumental concept of man as a being essentially divine, to Beckett's tramps picturing themselves as worms in a God-forsaken universe, and from Peer Gynt's uncentred onion self, which still adds up to a tremendous personality, to Pinter's "classic female figure" who is divested of personality as well as of self. The philosophical dissolution of man's essential Godgiven self and the redefinition of the human personality in existentialist terms as simply the sum of one's actions, habits, or roles, has its corollary in dramatic technique, of which the most radical example is Strindberg's A Dream Play, where the Dreamer's self is projected on stage, not as one indelible personality, which is still the case in Peer Gynt, but as a motley gallery of "dream characters, " each representing one aspect of the Dreamer's (the poet's) discontinuous self. Beckett's Krapp, spooling back the tapes of his former selves in search of his quintessential "I" and discovering that the "self" is merely a string of discarded habits; Osborne's Archie Rice playing for time against the inevitable annihilation of his inauthentic comedian's mask by "the man with the hook"; and Pinter's stupefied Stanley Webber being "crowned" by his persecutors with a bowler hat, the symbol of conformity, and hence of non-identity, are all modern counterparts of Peer Gynt, the "Emperor of Self.

Position of Employees within privatization procedures in the perspective of European Union Law

The neoliberal policy, which in the early seventies became the leading policy and economic doctrine still today has a very strong influence on the regulation of economic, financial and legal system. The global economic and financial crisis, which began in 2007, has left its mark on almost all countries that have had, due to the deterioration of public financial picture, obligation to carry out a series of measures to consolidate public finances. Privatization is only one part of neoliberal policies to address the financial crisis and a part of the management policy of the state and capital shares. When we talk about privatization we are discussing public policy that goes beyond fiscal and economic consequences. Public interest in the process of privatization has significant weight, although I have to point out it is also limited by provisions in European Union law. The seller of state property - a public entity must act as a diligent private investor in equal market conditions and lead the process of so-called "aid-free" privatization. It is also important to point out that privatization of state aid rules collides with the rules governing the position of employees in the privatization process (privatization also affect rules on takeovers and free competition, but these rules are not the subject of the master’s thesis). The privatization process with rules on state aid should not be an argument for non-integration and elimination of employees in the processes with contraction of their acquired rights. For workers there are crucial issues in preservation of their rights, in particular the security of their jobs, since the termination of the employment contract represents a deprivation of their social and economic security and usually means the loss of their main source of income. Interests of employees collide with the interests of the buyer and / or seller in privatization transactions, since the freedom to set conditions for the workforce and adapting the needs of business is the flexibility that proponents the activity for profit needs. The neoliberal policy in recent years was striving in maximizing the flexibility of labor law, due to increasing competition which was also further intensified with the process of globalization. In the privatization process there is a huge conflict of interests on one hand sellers and buyers of the state assets and on the other the interests of employees who want to maximize the security of maintaining existing rights. As I have indicated, state aids are part of the privatization public policy. State aid rules on one hand, encourage the consolidation of regional economies, since state aid is awarded directly to an individual undertaking, but on the other hand, they interfere with market competition and market conditions as they can also impede the functioning of the EU internal market. Having said that, I need to point out that in the sale of state assets there is essential to assess conditions of potential economic advantage for at least one company, whereby it comes in use the test of prudent private investor who wants the sale to achieve the highest possible price. Related to this, I must emphasize that this position is also based on the argument of competition law. The privatization of the company that gives economic advantage to at least one company contains illegal state aid if the buyer or seller obtains advantages or benefits that in otherwise normal sales between private operators would not be achieved. The process of privatization is also an important issue for workers\u27 participation and their influence in management as an instrument with which employees can participate in these processes. Vendors or. managers of state assets should pursue the objective and principles of socially responsible behavior, however, workers, their representatives and the social partners, should also be proactive and participate in these processes through institutes of worker participation

These days, the corporate world is characterized by changing market conditions at rapid speedcompanies are compelled to adapt in search of new competitive advantages. Talent has become one of the critical factors contributing to success, generally being defined as innate abilities and acquired skills that lie beyond average competencies and are cardinal in gaining a competitive edge. This thesis investigates the development of an effective talent management system in the case of Production Company X, to enhance competitiveness within both domestic and international markets. The focus of the thesis is a strategic approach toward talent management embracing four key stages: acquisition, recognition, development, and retention. The theoretical part of the thesis has been focused on the role of talent in modern business and explores the contribution that talent management can make towards gaining and sustaining a competitive advantage. It confirms the fact that only an all-inclusive, systematic approach to talent management empowers firms to effectively exploit opportunities and manage market challenges for strategic success. The empirical part of the thesis examines the current state at the manufacturing company X. The research reveals that the company is actively engaged in developing potentials, including educational seminars, training programs, and the use of personality and cognitive tests. Despite these efforts, the current practices are not fully integrated. To achieve greater efficiency, Company X could develop a comprehensive talent management concept that includes linking existing activities and aligning them with the company’s overall strategy. The new approaches outlined in the developed concept would enable better integration and support for the company\u27s strategic goals, thereby contributing to a stronger competitive advantage. We learn from our research that talent management has a very significant place in organizations and individuals. In the view of organizations, those that have talent reap a lot of benefits in terms of reduced costs and maximized revenues, increased production efficiency, better quality products and services, and a better image of the company. Those treated as talents attend different development and growth programs, enjoy numerous benefits, hold leadership or senior positions, and provide additional motivation for other employees. The thesis gives insight into how the knowledge of the impact of talent on business performance and its link with competitive advantage can be improved and also offers solutions on how companies can handle and transform the challenges in the modern business environment

Podatki so bili zbrani z opazovanjem, beleženjem odzivov in izpolnjevanjem ocenjevalnih listov. This thesis explores the impact of using a speech therapy puppet as a motivational tool for engaging preschool children in speech therapy exercises aimed at developing speech abilities. The purpose of the research was to determine whether the presence of the puppet increases the interest of children aged 2 to 4 in performing speech therapy exercises and listening to stories compared to situations without the puppet. The study was conducted at the Radlje ob Dravi Kindergarten with a sample of 13 children, where activities were carried out under two conditions: with the puppet and without it. Data were collected through observation, recording responses, and completing evaluation sheets. The results indicate that the speech therapy puppet positively influences children\u27s motivation, as it encourages loud syllable repetition, engaged participation, and better performance of exercises, especially in tongue movement repetition. The puppet served as a visual aid, making it easier for children to understand tasks and encouraging more confident participation. Based on these findings, we have formulated recommendations for incorporating the puppet into speech therapy sessions, as its use can enhance the effectiveness of therapy and accelerate children\u27s speech progress
