Predicting Ash Deposit Tendency in Thermal Utilization of Biomass
In thermochemical utilization of biomass, ash produced during the process is a major problem that can result in decreased performance and increased in difficulty during operation. Preliminary assessment of potential ash related troubles prior to the use of a specific biomass is valuable, even if it is only a general guideline. In this work, tendency of ash slagging, fouling and agglomeration in thermal processing of biomass was evaluated. Reference peered reviewed data including mineral content and fusion temperature of selected biomass ash were used to calculate multiple indicators (base to acid ratio, slagging index, fouling index, agglomeration index, slag viscosity index, and ternary diagram of main biomass ash composition) adopted from coal research. Major ash forming elements (Fe, Ca, Mg, K, Na, Al, Si) were found to be of relevance to ash melting and deposit behavior. For conventional biomass available locally, woody biomass (wood and wood sawdust) may be combusted without slagging or fouling problem, while non-woody biomasses (bark, husk, straw) are highly probable to experience some of these problems. The ash fusibility predictive models for woody and non-woody biomass were found to be effective. Mitigation can then be designed possibly via fuel blending to avoid or minimize the impact of biomass ash related trouble
Nonisothermal Thermogravimetric Analysis of Thai Lignite with High CaO Content
Thermal behaviors and combustion kinetics of Thai lignite with different SO3-free
CaO contents were investigated. Nonisothermal thermogravimetric method was carried out under
oxygen environment at heating rates of 10, 30, and 50°C min−1 from
ambient up to 1300°C. Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS)
methods were adopted to estimate the apparent activation energy (E) for the thermal decomposition of these coals. Different thermal
degradation behaviors were observed in lignites with low (14%) and high
(42%) CaO content. Activation energy of the lignite combustion was found
to vary with the conversion fraction. In comparison with the KAS method, higher E values were obtained by the FWO method for all conversions considered.
High CaO lignite was observed to have higher activation energy than the low CaO coal
Improving solar dryer performance with automatic control of auxiliary heated air
This research aims to design and test automatic auxiliary heating unit for solar dryer cabinets to improve drying performance. The auxiliary heating unit utilizes an infrared furnace with cooking gas, a fin heat exchanger, and a blower. It is equipped with an automatic control system to regulate the temperature of the dryer. An agricultural product used in the experiment was fresh pineapple slides. The experimental test was divided into three cases; using (i) solar dryer, (ii) hot air dryer from the automatic auxiliary heating unit and, (iii) combined solar dryer with auxiliary heating unit. Temperature of the automatic auxiliary heating unit was controlled at 55.0 ± 3.0 °C and the air flow speed in the dryer cabinet was 1.5 ± 0.2 m/s. The thermal output from the automatic auxiliary heating unit was more than 2700 W. From the tests, it was shown that the drying time could be reduced to 12.5 h from 32 h, when the solar dryer was combined with the automatic auxiliary heating unit, compared to using only solar dryer. Dried pineapple products showed good quality. Comparative analysis of CIELAB color properties indicated low pigmentation. From a simple economic analysis, return on investment was less than 3.0 months. The use of automatic auxiliary heating units to the solar dryer enabled reduction in drying time and improved product quality

For the hot air dryer combined with the 40 kilohertz of ultrasonic vibration system, a product placement tray was developed, with the installation of the ultrasonic vibration system along with a heat dissipation system for the vibrating head to dissipate accumulated heat. This system design allowed drying at higher temperatures. White turmeric was chosen as the experimental sample due to its medicinal properties and the presence of various important compounds. The drying experiments were conducted at temperatures of 50, 60, and 70 degrees Celsius using both the hot air dryer and the hot air dryer combined with the ultrasonic vibration system to compare drying performance. The results showed that the hot air dryer combined with the ultrasonic vibration system required less time for drying white turmeric, exhibited higher moisture removal rates, and achieved better drying efficiency compared to the hot air dryer alone at all drying temperature ranges. Additionally, at 70 degrees Celsius, the lowest specific energy consumption for drying the product was observed. Comparative analysis of product color, antioxidant activity, phenolics, flavonoids, pinostrobin, and panduratin A was also conducted. The optimal condition for preserving the active compounds in dried white fingerroot at the highest levels is drying at 60 degrees Celsius combined with an ultrasonic vibration system. The evaporation rate, thermal efficiency, and energy consumption were 0.250 kilogram/hour, 20.72 percent, and 29.960 kilowatt-hour/kilogram, respectively
