Death and salvation of refugee women on European borders: Race, gender and class of bodies and power
No full textBlack Lives Matter, along with the local movements it has generated around the world, has foregrounded how the differential value of bodies and human lives is deeply rooted in the colour line. However, the movement's claims also push us to consider the analytical legacy of past struggles against racial and gender hierarchies. In this article, I will refer to the intersectional perspective – which black feminism systematized in the 1980s – to analyze certain aspects of the ‘salvation’ policies that target refugee women, showing how Mediterranean border regimes are regulated by ethnic‐racial and gender norms. In particular, the article discusses how the sexuality of the racialized body has been constantly recoded by border regimes in order to establish gradations of inclusion and exclusion for migrants arriving in Italy through the Central Mediterranean route. These dynamics are reinforced by a humanitarian discourse depicting refugee women as subjects to be emancipated by the saving arms of the West

No full textCon un taglio etnografico e ripercorrendo la storia di una rifugiata, l’articolo guarda all’interazione fra memoria della violenza, strutture del tempo, poetiche del dicibile e della reticenza per riflettere su ciò che accade a questi caratteri della memoria quando incontrano le strutture burocratiche e umanitarie dell’asilo. Queste strutture usano canoni specifici per tracciare l’esperienza e codificare l’avvenuto, limitandosi a considerare la violazione come un evento, anziché considerare i modi con cui le persone colpite si rapportano a tali accadimenti e da cui la loro soggettività è stata trasformata. Al pari di molte altre storie di rifugiate, la storia riportata mostra come la violazione sia un accumulo di sofferenze che gira dentro e fuori a vincoli e classificazioni sociali che il linguaggio delle strutture statali e umanitarie fatica a decodificare. Allo sguardo di queste strutture rimane altresì invisibile la capacità con cui questa rifugiata dà indizi sulle matrici sociali della testimonianza e inserisce le sue esperienze nelle dimensioni del passato e dell’avvenire. L’articolo è anche un’occasione per riflettere sul riconoscimento pubblico, dato o negato, alle memorie dell’afflizione legate allo statuto politico dell’asilo.
Through the story of a refugee woman, this article reflects on the interplay between the memory of violence, the structures of time, and the poetics of the expressible and the reticence. What happens to these memory features when they encounter the bureaucratic and humanitarian apparatuses of asylum? These apparatuses use specific canons to trace the experience and codify the live’s events by validating mainly the violation or by posing the attention mainly on the violation. Tracing how refugee women relate to their own violation experience/trajectories and subjectivity, the article challenges the bureaucratic multiple encounters, showing how this violation is instead an accumulation of suffering. Like many other refugee stories, the story presented shows how the accumulation of suffering navigates inside and outside the social bonds and classifications that the language of state and humanitarian apparatuses struggle to code. In the eyes of these apparatuses, her ability negotiates to the social matrices of testimony and her attempt to contextualise her experience within the dimensions of the past and the future also remains invisible. The article is also an opportunity to reflect on the public recognition (given or denied) of memories of affliction related to political asylum
Donne come le altre. Soggettività, relazioni e vita quotidiana nelle migrazioni delle donne verso l'Italia
No full textRaccontando storie, mondi quotidiani, relazioni e conversazioni questo libro offre uno sguardo sui processi di ricollocamento di alcune donne immigrate in Italia, intesi come la costruzione di nuove esistenze e soggettività nella città di arrivo quando altri sistemi di relazione e di appartenenza sono stati modificati nella storia di migrazione. Molta letteratura si è spesa sull’immigrazione ponendo al centro delle sue riflessioni la questione dell’accoglienza, dei contesti di approdo, delle politiche ad essa rivolte. Una metodologia etnografica e narrativa insieme ad una prospettiva profondamente legata all’antropologia femminista restituiscono una lettura del processo del diventare soggettività immigrate dal punto di vista delle donne coinvolte nella ricerca. Pratiche di mediazione viste dalla prospettiva delle donne che le praticano, associazioni, amicizie femminili e storie di vita sono gli aspetti che attraversano queste pagine, scivolando così fra la dimensione più pubblica della migrazione e quella più privata e intimamente vissuta
Perfect victims and monstrous invaders: media, borders, and intersectionality in Italy
No full textThis article explores the reconfiguration of public, political and media discourses on migration to Italy’s Southern coasts since the re-making of the Mediterranean border regime, beginning in 2013. Combining our respective anthropological and cultural studies approaches, this article looks at how borders filter and control, and examines the semiotic implications of borders through shared reflections on the tightening of the EU border regime and Italy’s political positions on migrants and refugees. In the first section, Pinelli analyses border politics by looking at the shifts in humanitarian and political registers constructed on refugee women since 2010. Drawing on her ethnographic research, Pinelli demonstrates how these discursive registers legitimise the refusal of other migrants and exclude women from recognition as political and historical subjects. In the second section, Giuliani applies cultural and critical visual studies approaches to understand how two opposing media discourses on incoming migrants converge in construing the moral panic against migrants’ threats and, consequently, Italy as in need of protection. In bridging these two sections, our aim is to offer a feminist intersectional perspective to understand how sedimented categories of gender, race, sex, and class regulate relations between the receiving State and subjects who are the signers of historical hierarchies of difference (refugees, migrants, women), and to simultaneously explore the processes which construct the receiving ‘imagined community’ as white, innocent and under siege
