The novel function of miR-3195 in targeting mutant PROK2 to prevent Kallmann syndrome

    No full text
Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a rare human genetic disorder characterized by hypogonadotropic hypogonadism with the reduction or absence of olfactory sense. Mutations in multiple genes, including chemokine prokineticin-2 (PROK2), are considered to contribute to the abnormal migration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons in the embryonic stage. However, the mechanisms of the different inheritance modes of KS have not been comprehensively determined. In this article, we present the case of one KS patient with the same mutation in PROK2 (c.223-4C>A) as his mother. RNA-seq analysis of his leukocytes showed a new transcript of PROK2, which contained a partial intron (192 bp) compared to those of his parents. Furthermore, we observed that hsa-miRNA-3195 was expressed at low levels in his and his father’s sera compared to his mother’s. Unexpectedly, hsa-miRNA-3195 was also identified to specifically target the 192 bp intron of the aberrant PROK2 transcript of this patient. We determined that high expression of hsa-miRNA-3195 could efficiently target aberrant PROK2 and stabilize the normal function of PROK2 in vitro, which provided a probable explanation for the different phenotypes of the patient and his mother with the same genotype

Assessment of Self-Archiving in Institutional Repositories: Depositorship and Full-Text Availability

    No full text
This research evaluates the success of open access self-archiving in several well-known institutional repositories. Two assessment factors have been applied to examine the current practice of self-archiving: depositorship and the availability of full text. This research discovers that the rate of author self-archiving is low and that the majority of documents have been deposited by a librarian or administrative staff. Similarly, the rate of full-text availability is relatively low, except for Australian repositories. By identifying different practices of self-archiving, repository managers can create new strategies for the operation of their repositories and the development of archiving policies

    GaN PIN betavoltaic nuclear batteries

    No full text
GaN PIN betavoltaic nuclear batteries are demonstrated in this work. GaN epitaxial layers were grown on 2-inch sapphire sub-strates by MOCVD, and then the GaN PIN nuclear batteries were fabricated. Current-voltage (I-V) characteristic shows that the small leakage currents are 0.12 nA at 0 V and 1.76 nA at -10 V, respectively. With 147Pm the irradiation source, the maximum open circuit voltage and maximum short circuit current are 1.07 V and 0.554 nA, respectively. The fill factor (FF) of 24.7% for the battery was been obtained. The limited performance of the devices is mainly due to the low energy deposition in the microbatteries. Therefore, the GaN nuclear microbatteries are expected to be optimized by growing high quality GaN films, thin dead layer and so on

Parametric finite-element studies on the effect of tool shape in friction stir welding

    No full text
The success of the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process, and the weld quality produced, depends significantly on the design of the welding tool. In this paper the effect of variation in various tool geometry parameters on FSW process outcomes, during the plunge stage, were investigated. Specifically the tool shoulder surface angle and the ratio of the shoulder radius to pin radius on tool reaction force, tool torque, heat generation, temperature distribution and size of the weld zone were investigated. The studies were carried out numerically using the finite element method. The welding process used AA2024 aluminium alloy plates with a thickness of 3 mm. It was found that, in plunge stage, the larger the pin radius the higher force and torque the tool experiences and the greater heat generated. It is also found that the shoulder angle has very little effect on energy dissipation as well as little effect on temperature distribution

Fatigue delamination behaviour of unidirectional carbon fibre/epoxy laminates reinforced by Z-Fiber® pinnin

-Pin reinforced carbon-fibre epoxy laminates were tested under Mode I and Mode II conditions, both quasi-statically and in fatigue. Test procedures were adapted from existing standard or pre-standard tests. Samples containing 2% and 4% areal densities of carbon-fibre Z-pins (0.28mm diameter) were compared with unpinned laminates. Quasi-static tests under displacement control yielded a dramatic increase of the apparent delamination resistance. Specimens with 2% pin density failed in Mode I at loads 170N, equivalent to an apparent GIC of 2kJ/m2. Fatigue testing under load control showed that the presence of the through- thickness reinforcement slowed down fatigue delamination propagation

Information Literacy and Librarian-Faculty Collaboration: A Model for Success:

    No full text
In the age of information explosion and technological advancement, issues of information storage, organization, access, and evaluation have become necessarily important in our societies. Addressing issues of information literacy and designing how they can be best integrated in students' learning process are of critical importance. Library professionals in the United States, particularly in the academia, have realized the importance of information literacy and have attempted in various ways to address these issues. The ultimate goal is to make information literacy an integral part of the academic curriculum, thus helping students to succeed not only during their years in college but also for their lifelong career choices. This article will look at ways of how information literacy can best be incorporated into students' academic experience, and how this process can make students' learning meaningful and successful. Specifically, the author will examine the model of librarian-faculty collaboration in integrating information literacy into the curriculum, as demonstrated in the Ohio Five Colleges' Information Literacy Program.Publisher version of this article is available at: http://www.white-clouds.com/iclc/cliej/cl24.ht
