Task requirements and students’ perceptions of prompts in an academic writing classroom
No full textThe paper examines the research project task expectations of university student writers. It offers a detailed analysis of the rhetorical Moves that are likely to occur in university-level research paper prompts. The analysis highlights that while, some Moves such as Background information and Assessment expectations are optional, others like Cognitive demands on students are obligatory, and that an Overview of task and Procedural directions are desirable traits of prompts. A transitivity analysis of the prompts, student interviews and reflections revealed that despite the prescriptive tone and the heavy cognitive and rhetorical demands made on student writers, the prompts did not alienate the novices who were on the whole receptive to the requirements specified by the instructors.Published versio
Cultural resilience: Community initiatives to preserve linguistic heritage of diasporas in Singapore
No full textThis chapter explores the vibrant landscape of language initiatives within the Indian community in Singapore, which encompasses 11 linguistic subgroups that speak distinct languages such as Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and various other minority Indian languages. The research methodology comprises a qualitative approach, utilizing online interviews as the primary data collection method due to the constraints imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Complementing the interviews, documentary materials such as digital newsletters, newspapers and magazines produced within the communities serve as valuable sources of insight. The findings reveal a nuanced portrait of how the three South Indian minority language communities navigate the absence of institutional support in Singapore to champion the reading and writing of their respective languages. The discussion revolves around two pivotal approaches: community-run initiatives and the strategic utilization of technology. Within the realm of community-run initiatives, this study uncovers the significance of community-run language classes, community events and platforms that provide opportunities for individuals to engage in reading and writing activities.
