Pollenizer and Cultivar Influence Seed Number and Fruit Characteristics in Olea europaea L.
The effect of several pollination combinations of the olive cultivars Ascolana Tenera, Carolea, Leccino, and Picholine on seed quality and seed number and drupe and seed features were evaluated in 2007 and in 2008 in central Italy. The well-known pattern in olive fruit was confirmed by the high percentage of drupes (71.8%, on average) containing one seed with a closed endocarp, as the dispersal unit, optimizing the plant's investment in seedling survival. Based on the results of the x2 test of independence, there was a significant maternal and paternal effect on the number of normal seeds per drupe in some years and combinations. Particularly, in 2007, Picholine and Leccino cultivars (as mother) had drupes with two normal seeds (23.7% and 3.1%, respectively, with respect to 10.8% observed in a normal seed pattern), confirming that double-seeding in olive could be cultivar-dependent. Also the specific crosspollination between 'Carolea', as a pollenizer, and 'Ascolana Tenera' gave rise to a higher proportion of double-seeded drupes in 2007 (39% with respect to 14.3% expected to be in this category). In 2008, although 'Ascolana Tenera' produced more drupes with undeveloped seeds (31.9% with respect to 19.7% expected to be in that category), 'Leccino' and 'Carolea' had drupes with a lower number of undeveloped seed (14.2% and 11.5%, respectively). 'Maurino' and 'Ascolana Tenera' pollen produced significant effects on 'Leccino' drupes by increasing the number of drupes with undeveloped seeds in both experimental years. Double-seeded drupes outweighed those with only one normal seed in 'Leccino' and 'Picholine'. Instead, drupes with undeveloped seeds affected fruit weight, being generally lighter than those with normal seeds. Although the Leccino cultivar, combined with 'Maurino' and 'Ascolana Tenera', greatly increased the proportion of drupes without normal seed, such condition did not affect their final weight, which was not different from those with one normal seed, suggesting that this variety caused late seed death.Fil: Farinelli, Daniela. Abstract
The intra-laminar (IL) thalamic complex, composed of centromedian (CM) and parafascicular (Pf) nucleus, is a strategic crossroad for the activity of the basal ganglia and is recently regaining its position has a putative neurosurgical target for Parkinsonian syndromes. The multi-target approach we have encouraged since the late nineties has allowed the combined implantation of a standard target (the subthalamic nucleus-STN or the internal pallidus-GPi) plus an innovative one (CM/Pf) in well-identified Parkinson's disease (PD) patients; hence, it is possible to study, in the same PD patients, the specific target-mediated effects on different clinical signs. Here, we focus on the potential usefulness of implanting the CM/Pf complex when required in the management of contra-lateral tremor (resistant to standard deep brain stimulation-DBS - in STN - , n=2) and disabling involuntary movements, partially responsive to GPi-DBS (n=6). When considering global UPDRS scores, CM/Pf-DBS ameliorate extra-pyramidal symptoms but not as strongly as STN (or GPi) does. Yet, CM/Pf acts very powerfully on tremor and contributes to the long-term management of l-Dopa-induced involuntary movements. The lack of cognitive deficits and psychic impairment associated with the improvement of their quality of life, in our small cohort of CM/Pf implanted patients, reinforces the notion of CM/Pf as a safe and attractive area for surgical treatment of advanced PD, possibly affecting not only motor but also associative functions

Surface tension of liquid organic acids: An artificial neural network model
An artificial neural network model is proposed for the surface tension of liquid organic fatty acids covering a wide temperature range. A set of 2051 data collected for 98 acids (including carboxylic, aliphatic, and polyfunctional) was considered for the training, testing, and prediction of the resulting network model. Different architectures were explored, with the final choice giving the best results, in which the input layer has the reduced temperature (temperature divided by the critical point temperature), boiling temperature, and acentric factor as an independent variable, a 41-neuron hidden layer, and an output layer consisting of one neuron. The overall absolute percentage deviation is 1.33%, and the maximum percentage deviation is 14.53%. These results constitute a major improvement over the accuracy obtained using corresponding-states correlations from the literature

Visual Search Strategy in Judo Fighters During the Execution of the First Grip
Visual search behaviour is believed to be very relevant for athlete performance, especially for sports requiring refined visuo-motor coordination skills. Modern coaches believe that optimal visuo-motor strategy may be part of advanced training programs. Gaze behaviour of expert and novice judo fighters was investigated while they were doing a real sport-specific task. The athletes were tested while they performed a first grip either in an attack or defence condition. The results showed that expert judo fighters use a search strategy involving fewer fixations of longer duration than their novice counterparts. Experts spent a greater percentage of their time fixating on lapel and face with respect to other areas of the scene. On the contrary, the most frequently fixed cue for novice group was the sleeve area. It can be concluded that experts orient their gaze in the middle of the scene, both in attack and in defence, in order to gather more information at once, perhaps using parafoveal vision
Albanian as a Heritage Language in Italy: A Case Study on Code-Switching within DP
In this pilot work, we are going to discuss several aspects concerning the Albanian language spoken in the Italian territory by immigrants of different generations. After an excursus on heritage languages in general, and Albanian as a heritage language in particular, we present the results of both a sociolinguistic and a linguistic survey conducted among some Albanian immigrants in Italy. The former aims at investigating the contexts of use of Albanian and Italian languages, the participants’ competence in both of them and their attitude towards code-switching. The latter is focused on the participants’ judgments of the acceptability of different types of mixed Italian–Albanian DPs, i.e., DPs where D and N are expressed in different languages, and the theoretical implications that emerge
Mood stabilisers and pregnancy outcomes - a review
The purpose of this review is to give useful information to guide clinicians when treating pregnant women affected by bipolar disorder. This review focuses on mood stabilizers including lithium, sodium valproate, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, gabapentin, lamotrigine and topiramate. Data have been extracted from a MEDLINE search. Data from prospective, retrospective and case-control studies as well as systematic reviews, meta-analysis and data from Pregnancy Registry were included. Major congenital malformations as well as specific malformations were reported for each drug. Preliminary findings seem to identify lamotrigine as one ofthe safest antiepileptic drugs to be used in pregnancy. Teratogenity risk oftopiramate is still largely unknown and there are not enough studies to draw even preliminary conclusions. Preliminary studies failed to report an increased risk for major congenital malformations among gabapentin or.oxcarbazepine exposed pregnancies. Even if raising less concern when compared to valproate, carbamazepine should be avoided for its documented teratogenity risk. Valproate seems to be the worst considering major congenital malformations, specific malformations as,well as its detrimental effects on neurodevelopment. On the other hand, lithium might be considered a good option when treating pregnant women affected by bipolar disorder. Given the limited research on mood stabilizers in pregnancy, clinicians need to be very careful when treating child bearing age women. Clinicians have to balance the potential teratogenityrisk against that of untreated mental illness considering individual circumstances such as severity of illness and risk of relapse
