Robert S. Lyons, Jr., of Upper Southampton, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013. He was 73. Born June 29, 1939, in Philadelphia, PA, Bob was the son of the late Robert and Catharine Lyons. Bob is survived by his; beloved wife Joan M. Lyons (nee Lang); children, Joanne Jenkins (Ken), Robert P., M.D. (Renee), Richard (Leanne), David (Julie), and Gregory. He will also be missed by his 11 grandchildren. Bob Lyons, the author of Palestra Pandemonium: A History of the Big 5, and On Any Given Sunday: A Life of Bert Bell, and co-author of The Eagles Encyclopedia (with Ray Didinger) and Big Al: Fifty Years of Adventures in Sports Broadcasting (with Al Meltzer) has been president of his own suburban-Philadelphia-based editorial services and public relations firm, since 1995. He has provided professional services to a variety of organizations including the Associated Press, Brandywine Global Investment Management, La Salle University, Merrill Lynch, Elf Atochem, Princeton University, and Philadelphia’s WHYY-TV, among others. Before forming his consulting firm, Lyons served in a number of capacities at La Salle University including director of the News Bureau, editor of LA SALLE, the university’s alumni quarterly magazine, and lecturer in the Communication Department, teaching courses in journalism, public relations, and advertising. A 1961 graduate of La Salle, Lyons joined the university in 1962 as the school’s first sports information director. During his seven-year tenure as SID, La Salle’s basketball media brochure was honored four times for excellence as the best publication in Dis-trict II (East) by the United States Basketball Writers Association. Lyons has also worked as a commercial advertising and public relations account executive, a news and sports reporter for The (former) Philadelphia Bulletin, and the public relations consultant for Abington (PA) Township. He was a sports correspondent for the Associated Press for more than 35 years before retiring in 2011. He has contributed free lance articles to numerous national publications including The Saturday Evening Post, Christian Science Monitor, Nation’s Business, Delta SKY Magazine, The Sporting News, and Baseball Digest, among others. The past president and former chairman of the board of the Philadelphia Public Relations Association, Lyons has also served on the boards of the Philadelphia Sportswriters Association and La Salle University Alumni Association, as well as the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame selection committee. A native of Philadelphia and a 1957 graduate of Northeast Catholic High School, he was a Democratic Committeeman in the 23rd Division of the 50th Ward in the northwest section of the city from 1964 to 1971. How Are Games Educational? Learning Theories Embodied in Games
Get PDFThrough the combined efforts of many dedicated researchers across the globe, the “message” of the value of games for learning is starting to be heard in formal education, but there remains considerable resistance. One way to help overcome this resistance and influence the acceptance and integration of games as educational technology is through the connection of existing game design with scholarly and widely accepted pedagogy. This paper outlines the theories of Robert Gagné, and Howard Gardner to demonstrate how good games, even purely commercial ones, already embody the fundamental elements of these learning and instructional theories. In this way, it can be shown that good games constitute sound educational pedagogy

Get PDFBackground: One of the most pressing phases for all economic agents is post-retirement standard of living. Irrespective of the higher returns on pension contribution and varied pension reforms, there are possible factors that can render these pension benefits inadequate, which can affect the longevity of retirees. Studies conducted in other countries have concluded that inflation deteriorates the value of pension benefits.
Aim: This study, thus, sought to assess the impact of some major economic indicators in the Ghanaian environment on pension benefits.
Setting: This study was carried out in Ghana by obtaining quarterly data frequencies on pension benefits and economic indicators spanning the period 2000Q1 to 2014Q4.
Method: The Auto-regressive Distributed Lag Model was utilised to examine the long run and short run dynamics of some major economic indicators and pension benefits.
Results: The empirical evidence indicated that inflation deteriorates total pension benefits. Increasing monetary policy rate and depreciation of the domestic currency should be an issue to contend with only in the short run rather than in the long run. The study also found the prominence of the implementation of the National Pension Reform in 2008.
Conclusion: The study concluded that if policy makers target the reduction in the monetary policy rate and the appreciation of the domestic currency in an effort to stabilise the value of total pension benefits in the long run, it would not be effective in the long run because of their insignificant nature. Policy makers should rather target inflation as the prime tool for stabilising the standard of living of retirees in the long run
The impacts of climate change and smallholder farmers’ adaptive capacities on rice production in Chengdu, China: macro-micro analysis
No full textAmong other cultivated crops, rice is the most sensitive to climate variability over its growing season. As such, over-reliance on climate conditions for rice farming calls for a wide range of strategies critical to curtailing the adverse impact of climate change on rice production. Notwithstanding, there remain considerable gaps in our knowledge of adaptive capacities among China’s small-scale farmers who depend on climate conditions for farming. This study is broadly divided into two parts that are distinct but connected. First, we assess the effects of climate change on rice production in Chengdu (China), covering the period 2000Q1-2016Q4. We show that mean rainfall and temperature induce rice production positively in the long and short run. While temperature variability insignificantly impacts rice production in the long run, it plays a substantial role in the short run. Rainfall variability and the interaction term between temperature and precipitation are unfavourable to rice production in the long and short run. The results reveal that energy usage and fertilizer application support rice production, although the impact of energy consumption is significant in the short run. Second, we used a survey of 383 smallholder rice growers in Chengdu to examine farmers’ adaptive capacities to climate change in rice production. The results show that farmers’ adaptive capabilities significantly affect rice production. We argue that the centrepiece of improving rice production under continuous climate change is for farmers to develop a high adaptive capacity to the changing climatic conditions. This is achieved through intensive education on available adaptation strategies and their long-term implications

No full textThis thesis analyses the British official attitudes and the gradual change of British policy towards Hungary and Hungarian revisionism in the period from the Anschluss in March 1938 to December 1941, when the British government declared war on Hungary. The primary focus of this thesis lies in the impact of Hungary`s territorial claims on British policy towards Hungary and Central Europe and upon the criteria Britain judged the territorial gains of Hungary between 1938 and 1941. This work is the result of the author`s research in British, American and Hungarian archives, along with his reflection on numerous documentary editions, diaries, memoirs and secondary sources. It aims to deepen our knowledge of Anglo-Hungarian relationship, British Central European policy and the British view of regional territorial disputes. At the same time, it is keen to dispel the myths and stereotypes of the British and Hungarian historiography, which have so far viewed Hungary as an unimportant factor in British Central European strategy
