The economics of cultural formation of preferences
Pichler M. The economics of cultural formation of preferences. Working Papers. Institute of Mathematical Economics. Vol 431. Bielefeld: Universität Bielefeld; 2010.This paper introduces a generalized representation of the formation of continuous preferences (which can reflect different intensities). The preference intensity that a child adopts is formed as the collective outcome of all role models for preference intensities - which are derived from the socioeconomic actions of adults - that it socially learns from. We then show how the adopted preference intensities induce preferences over socioeconomic choices. Finally, this cultural formation of preferences process is endogenized as resulting out of optimal parental socialization decisions. This framework thus endogenously determines the intergenerational evolution of preference intensities and the induced preferences
Sustainable communication of cities and citizen engagement on digital channels
Po drugi strani digitalni kanali sicer omogočajo nove oblike povezovanja in interakcije, vendar mesta prebivalce le redko vključujejo v komuniciranje trajnosti. Vključenost prebivalcev je torej še vedno zelo omejena, saj prevladujejo vsebine brez spodbujanja odzivov.Today, sustainability challenges require society to work together, share views and collectively decide how to resolve them. In this regard, sustainability communication has great potential in promoting active participation and collective decision-making in achieving change through inclusive approaches in addition to sharing information and raising awareness about the ecological, social and economic dimensions of sustainability. Digital media could be key in transitioning to inclusive forms of sustainability communication, due to their increased interactivity, accessibility and participation. However, sustainability communication on digital channels is less researched from a communication perspective, especially in the context of cities, which are the most visible spaces for citizens to implement sustainable development changes. Therefore, this work explores the sustainable communication of cities via digital communication channels. Through a qualitative case study of two cities, the aim was to discover what types of sustainability communication are used and which aspects of sustainability are highlighted, as well as to what extent such communication is inclusive towards citizens. The findings show that sustainable communication of cities on digital channels is mostly unidirectional, with few examples of a transformative approach. Despite the presence of all three dimensions of sustainability, the ecological dimension is still dominant, and the SDGs are poorly communicated. On the other hand, while digital channels enable new forms of engagement and interaction, cities rarely involve citizens in sustainability communication. Citizen engagement is therefore very limited
Cultural Formation of Preferences and Assimilation of Cultural Groups
Based on the cultural formation of continuous preferences framework of Pichler (IMW Working Paper No. 431, 2010), this paper analyzes the evolution of preferences and behavior in a two cultural groups setting. We show that the qualitative dynamic properties depend crucially on what parents perceive as the optimal preferences for their children to adopt. Under inter– generationally fixed optimal preferences, the preferences of the cultural groups will always stay distinct. If the optimal preferences coincide with those derived from the representative group behavior, then a multitude of convergence path types can realize. These contain both an inter–generational assimilation process toward the same preference point, as well as inter–generational dissimilation.Continuous Preferences, Assimilation, Cultural Groups, Endogenous Preferences, Preference Evolution, Socialization

Optimal control for Rydberg quantum technology building blocks
We consider a platform for quantum technology based on Rydberg atoms in optical lattices where each atom encodes one qubit of information and external lasers can manipulate their state. We demonstrate how optimal control theory enables the functioning of two specific building blocks on this platform: We engineer an optimal protocol to perform a two-qubit phase gate and to transfer the information within the lattice among specific sites. These two elementary operations allow to design very general operations like storage of atoms and entanglement purification as, for example, needed for quantum repeaters
