No full textDi fronte a un’architettura urbana complessa e interessata da usi collettivi, come il convento di cui si discute in questo libro, non pare che l’analisi stilistica possa costituirsi come chiave interpretativa esclusiva o prevalente. Ho tentato allora di scegliere un punto di vista che potesse rendere conto per lo meno di alcuni dei problemi di interpretazione aperti dall’opera, senza perdere di vista la configurazione degli edifici. Ho ritenuto utile innanzitutto rifarmi alla nozione di sito, adottando una scala topografica di analisi che consenta di localizzare e collocare sul terreno le azioni di cui vogliamo tenere memoria, e le loro trascrizioni documentarie e materiali. Nella seconda parte ho utilizzato, per affrontare il tema delle trasformazioni architettoniche del convento nel secolo XVIII reintroducendo anche la figura dell’autore, il concetto di agenda

Full text linkLa storiografia architettonica ha costruito un’immagine del cantiere sabaudo di età moderna a tratti idealizzata, sia perché fondata sullo studio dei cantieri meglio documentati sia in quanto largamente basata sull’analisi di fonti prescrittive. Le interpretazioni si sono costruite dimenticando, a volte, che tra disegni, istruzioni ed edificio vi è di mezzo il cantiere, luogo fisico e luogo sociale, con le sue crisi e le sue incertezze, e le sue leggi non sempre scritte. Per questo, ci proponiamo qui di attirare l’attenzione su ciò che in alcuni cantieri non ha funzionato, puntualmente o sistematicamente. I cantieri del sei- e settecento sono infatti contraddistinti da tensioni e conflitti ricorrenti, e da crisi inattese, che sfociano talvolta in azioni giuridiche. Le tracce documentarie di queste crisi aiutano a scrutare dietro le facciate in costruzione e a salire sulle impalcature, restituendo immagini più sfumate dell’avanzata dello stato del Settecento e dell’affermazione di una nuova ‘organizzazione di tipo imprenditoriale’ del campo della costruzione
Embrace and escape: Carlo Mollino's refinement on Modernism in Condominium di San Remo
No full textTurinese architect Carlo Mollino (1905-1973) had a peculiar approach towards modernity. Some consider his design detached from the Italian post-war reality, but others consider the detachment as the result of his reflection on the functionalist utopia in post-war Europe[1]. Regardless, his artistic expression of personal value is worth studying. In Mollino’s article about his unbuilt project for a Condominium in San Remo he clearly illustrated his intention to escape. This essay uses Le Corbusier’s Unité d'Habitation in Marseille as a reference to investigate Mollino’s embrace and escape of Modernism in design, and to illustrate his aim of accepting the advanced technology of modernism while escaping from its social responsibilities. The fragile agency of the draftsman's house
Full text linkDismantling an architectural scholar and draftsman’s apartment leads to an interrogation of the concept of agency of buildings and place. The setting is a rental flat in an Italian working-class neighborhood, a place of life and work for an architecture historian, a specialist in survey drawings, who used it as his workspace for decades. Upon entering the apartment, the rooms and objects within it appeared as physical and spatial entities testifying to a deep connection with the former owner. The objects, the interiors, and the building itself seemed to possess an agency that had resisted the departure of the human dweller and acted with disquieting power over those in charge of reordering his archive. Further investigation, however, also revealed that this same place witnessed the progressive vanishing of memory of the draftsman and scholar during the last years of his occupancy. The fragility of the bond between individual and place was exposed
