Kreatives Übersetzen von Idiomen. Ein didaktisches Experiment

    No full text
The present contribution aims at investigating the interrelation of creativity and level of competence in students of translation science. In order to find out whether creativity increases or decreases with the acquisition of more advanced competencies and skills in text analysis, translation and translation assessment, a didactic experiment was devised that involved students from different courses (both at Bachelor’s and Master’s level). The experiment focused on the translation of idiomatic expressions, which often pose a challenge for translators and are supposed to enhance creativity. The author first classified the translations according to a typology of correspondences, in order to assess the students’ degree of basic creativity. In a second step, the quality of the provided solutions was judged, in order to establish the degree of what has been termed successful creativity. The results are encouraging, although further studies are certainly needed

The article aims to overcome the dichotomies that traditionally characterize the public debate on surrogacy – such as birth power/commodification, coercion/consent and dignity/self-determination – by shedding light on the distributive conflicts that lie beneath the surrogacy transactions. In particular, the author analyzes the birth mother/surrogacy market relationship, and the alleged infringement of human dignity, with a focus on the shortage of alternatives offered by a patriarchal economy based on the production/reproduction divide. Eventually the article highlights jurists’ misuse of Nature as a normative principle and the legal construction of Motherhood as a powerful apparatus functional to the preservation of the traditional family

This article analyzes the legal regime of reproductive labor as de- fined by the case law of the Italian Supreme Court on alimony at di- vorce. It aims to highlight the limits of the recognition and assessment of family care work in the most recent decisions rendered by the Cas- sation Court in Plenary Session. Given the traditional invisibility of re- productive labor in the legal spectrum, the Supreme Court’s overruling of 2018 on alimony and the subsequent precedents can be seen as a major factor of innovation in the field and an important step towards substantive gender equality in family law. Nevertheless – the author claims – the rhetorical setting associated with the production/repro- duction divide remains in place and represents a significant obstacle to the full recognition of the productive value of care

L'hedging nel discorso sociologico italiano e tedesco

    No full text
This paper aims to describe hedging strategies in German and Italian sociological texts. The domain of sociology was chosen in consideration of the important role attenuating devices can play in this kind of discourse in order to express subtle nuances of meaning or communicative intention. A bilingual review, containing articles of German and Italian sociologists together with their respective translations, gave the opportunity to conduct both a constrastive and a translational analysis. As a first step, the use of hedges in the original German and Italian articles was analysed in order to find out possible differences between the two languages and cultures. Indeed, the results confirmed the cultural boundedness described in previous studies on other languages and showed different preferences for particular types of hedges: German authors use attenuating devices mainly for the sake of precision, Italian authors mostly for interpersonal reasons. In the second part of the analysis, attention was focused on the problems that can be posed by the translation of hedges. Firstly, the linguistic devices used for hedging purposes may differ in the two languages, so that translators should not content themselves with “direct” equivalents but rather know what forms are most frequently used in the target language. Secondly, translators should consider whether to adapt the patterns of hedging to the conventions of the target language to achieve an equivalent effect. And lastly, it may difficult to determine the precise meaning attributed by an author to a given hedge: in the most complex cases, therefore, the correct interpretation will be obtained only with his consultation

pp.133-156This article presents a case study of translation revision. The author analyses the revised transtation of a handbook on nursing using an adaptation of the psycholinguistic model proposed by Hayes et al. (1987) in order to investigate the relationships between the reviser’s cognitive processes and the quality of the end product. In particular, three factors are analysed: the development of the reviser’s task definition; the relationship between the quality of the translation and that of the revision; and the reviser's tolerance margin. The results highlight therefore that revision is a non-linear and non-uniform process, which is aflected mostly by the way the task definition changes as the revision proceeds

This paper first introduces the question of the commons, as a social and political movement in contemporary Italy, and secondly reflects on the evolution of legal categories in reaction to these social movements. For the author, the commons are above all else an opportunity to think beyond the conceptual oppositions which order modern law, especially in its formalization in codes. The opposition between public and private, the state and the individual but also nature and culture are the bases of a philosophical and legal framework which is being increasingly rejected by new political experiments, which contribute to undermining these structural oppositions. Social imagination and the production of legal concepts appear as the two faces of a historical movement, in which the naturalization of the property paradigm collapses, opening the way for the development of a proper law of the commons

    Panorami abitabili

What’s My Social Distance? Measuring Individual Differences in Personal Space

    No full text
Personal space is a concept that was brought into public awareness during the COVID-19 pandemic, when safety precautions were put in place to inhibit natural tendencies to stand particular distances apart. Although a number of variables influence preferred distances (Hayduk, 1983), researchers have yet to evaluate the extent to which people naturally vary in their preferences. This study was designed to investigate preferred personal space during social interactions employing the social relations model (Kenny, 1994). This model proposes that social behavior is explained by three sources of variance: the actor (the tendency to act the same way to all people), the partner (the tendency for all people to act the same way to certain people), and the relationship (the tendency for individuals to act uniquely with certain other individuals). Our analysis seeks to test the relative influence of these three sources of variance on preferred personal distances. Groups of up to six people participated in a round robin design, in which they took turns interacting with every other group member. After informed consent was acquired, one participant stood at one end of a large room. The other participants then took turns walking down the room to where the single participant was standing to answer a chosen, introductory question. The researchers then recorded the distance between the two participants. Each participant did this three times before a new individual was then moved to the end of the room. After all rounds were over, participants completed a survey designed to assess their familiarity with and impressions of the other participants, using a variation of the Big 5 personality traits. Finally, height and arm span measurements were taken. We expect the upcoming results to help us to better understand what factors most strongly influence the distances people create and maintain with others

The art concealed: Translation as sprezzatura

    No full text
In his influential treatise, The Book of the Courtier (1528), the Italian Renaissance writer Baldesar Castiglione introduces the fascinating concept of sprezzatura (translated as \u27nonchalance\u27 or even \u27disdain\u27), which he urges the perfect courtier to practise in order to disguise his meticulous training and make his actions appear graceful and effortless. This essay applies the concept of sprezzatura to the sphere of translation in order to give a healthy twist to the notion of invisibility. Indeed, far from reflecting a humble acceptance of a marginal role or the refusal to acknowledge one\u27s centrality and responsibility to the text, through sprezzatura invisibility becomes the effect of a skilful strategy whereby translators, unseen and therefore ever more in control, create an artful spontaneity, forging an artificial but seemingly natural connection between the audience and the truly invisible player-the author. Ultimately, sprezzatura allows translators to see themselves as consummate illusionists and promotes a translating style that, rather than chasing perfect equivalence and mourning losses, trusts the suggestive power of language to evoke the distant echoes of a foreign text

Since more and more people leave rural areas, it is important to find opportunities for diversification of rural life, in order to preserve job opportunities in these areas The purpose of this bachelor´s thesis is to explore whether the farming of alpacas in Estonia could be profitable and evolve to be an alternative production branch in rural areas. The data of the rearing costs of alpacas, used in this bachelor’s thesis, has been provided by the owners of Tonovan OÜ/Wile farm. In addition to the cost data, this farm also provided data of animal accession, deaths and sales, as well as the data of the amount and value of wool collected from the animals. In this bachelor´s thesis, the assumption of the calculations is that the main herd is constant in size. In order to make conclusions it is important to consider that there can be differences in costs and income depending on whether the objective of the company is to keep the herd size constant or to increase the number of animals. The gross margin approach was used to analyse the results of alpaca farming, but also estimated profit; profit margin on costs and profit margin on sales were calculated. The results are dependent on specific conditions of each company. The outcome of the gross margin analysis was that the value of production under the current price conditions covered variable costs. The biggest share of variable costs can be attributed to feed costs with 84,19%. The fixed costs of alpaca rearing are veterinary costs, labour costs, repair and maintenance costs of the machinery; also the depreciation of the trimming machine; tractor and enclosures; the costs of electricity and water. Labour costs are the biggest part of the fixed costs. In this thesis, only the costs of rearing the alpacas have been considered. It is important to mention that if the alpaca-rearing is connected for example to tourism, both output and costs would differ as the company would have additional income and expenses associated with tourism. Author believes that this research could be valuable to people who are interested in alpaca farming
