The Structure and Content of the Polish-Ukrainian Phraseology Dictionary (chosen aspects of the project)

    No full text
The lack of lexicographical works that confront phraseology of Polish and Ukrainian languages is a current problem. This project aims to answer the need and is a study of units active in both languages , lacking the outdated features. The authors of the Polish-Ukrainian Phraseology Dictionary plan to include classical idioms, representing the core of the entire set of phraseological units for each language, proverbs and sayings. This choice is motivated by a desire to showcase the richness and diversity of the basic image-makers serving as internal forms of stabilized units in both languages. The essential point for choosing relevant idioms will be their pictoriality and specific dynamics of internal forms, which marks, following the authors’ logic, the attractiveness of phraseological links. Preliminary studies showcase that very often basic images in confronting Slavic languages are totally dissimilar to each other, or at least partially different from each other. The authors wish to extend idioms pairs to separate synonymous units. This will cause the significant expansion of the whole edition, but also contribute to the wealth of phraseology systems, in particular to their semantic range. Therefore, the planned dictionary will additionally serve as a dictionary of synonyms. It will be furnished with two indexes. Each index will contain phraseological idioms from one of the described languages, respectively – Polish units and Ukrainian units. Indexes will be a kind of key streamline in the dictionary usage. The arrangement of compounds in the dictionary will be illustrated in a transparent manner.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. The author of this article discusses creative use of stereotype and a linguistic view of the world employing Hilary Putnam’s definition of stereotype. Semantic stereotype is contained in the structure of language and it is one of the basic elements of the linguistic picture of the world, but paradoxically creative use of stereotype contradicts the system of beliefs, ideas and norms contained in the language. Creative use of stereotype is one of the ways of creating private linguistic view of the world. The author distinguishes three types of creative use of stereotype: contradiction, overstatement or accentuation and using of stereotype as a premise in order to draw absurd conclusions. Creative use of stereotype is one of the ironic linguistic devices. It may be used not only as means of presenting the linguistic view of the world, but also of reaching persuasive goals.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. No full text
The paper discusses the concept of ethnic stereotype and its main characteristics (simplicity, emotionality, evaluativeness, caricatural nature, and relative stability), and covers the issues of stereotype structure. The author examines various methods for studying ethnic stereotypes within the linguistic approach. The work aims to identify the ethnic stereotype of a Ukrainian by using different techniques. The author makes an association experiment according to the method proposed by I. M. Kobozeva, and compares the results with the data from E. E. Levkievskaya, E. Ya. Shmeleva and A. D. Shmelev’s studies. The comparison of the experimental data obtained by the author with the results from other studies suggests that the perception of Ukrainians in the Russian linguistic worldview is not definite. The article concludes that using a comprehensive approach when studying ethic stereotypes is necessary.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”.
