Lateral strength Of urm piers: comparison between codified criteria and in-plane test results

    No full text
The lateral resistance represents one of the most significant wall parameters to be used in the seismic analyses for the design/assessment of masonry buildings. In this article, an investigation on in-plane lateral strength of URM piers has been proposed thorough a comparison between the results from codified criteria and the outcomes of several experimental in-plane cyclic tests on masonry walls. In this context, a new database collecting the results of in-plane cyclic tests on unreinforced masonry piers, carried out within different research projects, has been devel-oped. The database consists of walls with bricks and blocks with different masonry materials (clay, lightweight aerated concrete, AAC, calcium silicate), bed-and head-joint typologies, di-mensions, boundary conditions, vertical applied loads and horizontal loading history. This source of information of consistent and reliable test results represents a necessary step into the process of definition of shared rules in the European context.Accepted Author ManuscriptApplied Mechanic

Development of a dataset on the in-plane experimental response of URM piers with bricks and blocks

    No full text
In this paper, a dataset collecting the results of in-plane cyclic tests on unreinforced masonry piers, carried out within different research projects, is presented. The dataset includes brick and block walls with different materials, bed-and head-joint typologies, dimensions, boundary conditions and vertical applied loads. The development of such dataset aims at providing a tool for the improvement of the understanding and the evaluation of the main parameters that may influence and govern the lateral response of the URM piers under seismic excitation. A preliminary investigation on the in-plane lateral strength and displacement capacity, being two of the most significant parameters used in seismic analyses for the design and assessment of masonry buildings, has been proposed. The dataset, that already groups several specimens, is freely shared and might be continuously updated. This source of information of consistent and reliable test results represents a necessary step into the process of definition of shared rules within the scientific and technical community, in particular for the improvement of codified criteria, analytical and numerical models and testing procedures.Applied Mechanic

Planning Innovation and Regional Development: the Spreading of Urban Strategic Planning in Southern Italy

    No full text
For decades the Italian system of planning has been strongly characterized by a regulatory approach and the question of cities’ development had been taken into account within general land use plans. In the 1990s this approach has been considered a strong constraint on the regeneration of cities and the revitalization of their economic potential. Therefore, in the last decade the improvement of flexibility and participation within planning processes were considered primary objectives both at regional and local levels. In addition to spatial regulatory plans, large and medium sized cities became increasingly interested in developing urban strategic plans following the model of some European “success stories†of urban regeneration (such as Barcelona, Lyon, Glasgow). In a first phase, these planning experiments were prevalently carried out by the cities of the Northern regions (such us Torino, Firenze, Venezia, Trento) and supported by strong voluntary public-private partnerships. In a second phase, after a financial programme by the Ministry of Economy, more then 150 cities in the Southern regions started strategic planning processes. These latest strategic plans (at present under observation both from policy makers and urban-regional scientists) should be evaluated in a very different way in comparison with the strategic plans carried out in Northern Italy. That’s for two main reasons: • First, because the majority of Southern cities still lag behind from an economic point of view, in addiction to very problematic governance environments and fragmented local societies; • Secondly, as a consequence of the financial support provided to municipalities, because the national and the regional authorities require Southern cities to improve, through strategic planning, their capacity to implement effective regeneration programmes and to increase their access to the EU structural funds. Starting from these distinctive issues, this paper aims to critically discuss the spreading of strategic planning in Southern Italian regions, trying to analyse the ongoing process of innovation as regards the objectives undertaken at national level.

Landscape as key element in finding coherence in territorial policies

    No full text
Giving real meaning to the concept of coherence is a key action in the definition of territorial planning practices. In the search of coherence at the territorial level, landscape is a fundamental issue, being the result of the interaction between communities and territorial dynamics. Landscape is the product of the different policies playing in the territory and needs criteria for coherence. This research shows the process defining strategic objectives and key concepts (identity, heritage, diversity, connections, integration) in the framework of the Regional Landscape Plan in Friuli Venezia-Giulia (Italy). The results of this process question conventional approaches to landscape planning and underline the role of coherence in setting-up multi-actor practices of landscape construction
