Estudio transversal de neosporosis en la principal cuenca lechera del Uruguay
La Neosporosis es una enfermedad extendida a nivel mundial caracterizada en muchos países como la principal causa de aborto bovino, provocando grandes perdidas económicas. El objetivo del estudio fue describir la epidemiología de la Neosporosis en la cuenca lechera sur del Uruguay, estimando la seroprevalencia en bovinos y perros de tambo, estudiar la relación entre ambas e identificar factores asociados a la seroprevalencia bovina. Se realizó un estudio transversal en 84 establecimientos durante los años 2001-03. Los tambos fueron seleccionados a través de veterinarios y por muestreo aleatorio estratificado por departamento. Fueron muestreadas 20 vacas por tambo, totalizando 1597 muestras. La serología se evaluó por ELISA (bovinos) e IFI (perros). Mediante cuestionario se relevaron aspectos de manejo, sanitarios, productivos, presencia de aves, roedores y zorros. Los factores fueron evaluados mediante un estudio de casos (seroprevalencia ?20%) y controles y las variables continuas mediante regresión múltiple. Para el porcentaje de abortos y el número de servicio por preñez se utilizaron pruebas no paramétricas. La seroprevalencia estimada en bovinos fue de 22% ± 5,2% con una difusión de 92%. Los perros muestreados fueron 212, promediando 2,32 ± 1,52 por establecimiento, cuya seroprevalencia fue 41% y la difusión 63%. La seroprevalencia en bovinos no mostró relación con la presencia o el número de perros ni su serología. Ninguno de los factores de manejo evaluados fue significativo. Las diferencias en producción de leche, intervalos interparto, porcentaje de abortos y número de servicios por preñez no fueron significativas. N. caninum está presente en la cuenca lechera sur con muy alta difusión en los rodeos. No se identificaron factores de riesgo o protección asociados a altas seroprevalencias en nuestras condiciones productivas
A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams
We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. CO2 emissions and economic activity: heterogeneity across countries and non stationary series
This paper explores the homogeneity of the functional form, the parameters, and the turning point, when appropriate, of the relationship between CO2 emissions and economic activity for 31 countries (28 OECD, Brazil, China, and India) during the period 1950 to 2006 using cointegration analysis. With a sample highly overlapped over time between countries, the result reveals that the homogeneity across countries is rejected, both in functional form and in the parameters of long term relationship. This confirms the relevance of considering the heterogeneity in exploring the relationship between air pollution and economic activity to avoid spurious parameter estimates and infer a wrong behavior of the functional form, which could lead to induce that the relationship is reversed when in fact it is direct.Bound testing, cointegration, CO2 emissions, environmental Kuznets curve, heterogeneity
The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law
Abstract
The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Investigation of the manoeuvrability characteristics of a Gate Rudder system using numerical, experimental, and full-scale techniques
The Gate Rudder is a recently introduced twin rudder system whose major advantages stem from its energy saving properties. The two foil-shaped blades of the rudder, placed aside of the propeller, act as a partial duct in the wake of the hull producing additional thrust. However, since the rudder is a primary safety device on any vessel, investigating the manoeuvrability performance of the Gate Rudder is a critical aspect that needs careful and detailed consideration. Owing to its peculiar working principle and location, the standard manoeuvrability prediction methods cannot produce reliable results since they are applied to r udders acting behind the propellers. This paper presents the first comprehensive investigation into the manoeuvrability performance of a Gate Rudder system, which includes the development of a modified MMG model, towing tank experiments and fullscale measurements. The modified MMG model was conceived to predict the manoeuvring motions of a ship with the Gate Rudder system. A generalised prediction method is defined based on this modified MMG model and detailed CFD analysis of the flow pattern around the Gate Rudder for two commercial hull-forms. The simulation model of the Gate Rudder is validated by means of towing tank tests and full-scale manoeuvring trials. The sea trials were conducted onboard two sister container vessels, the first fitted with the first-ever Gate Rudder system and the second with a high-performance flap rudder. This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
On the universality of medical device regulations : the case of Benin
Background
Regulatory frameworks surrounding medical devices (MDs) and medical locations are of utter importance for safeguarding patients and users, and for granting a universal access to healthcare.
Currently, as the main existing regulatory frameworks are drafted by high-income countries, they pretend to be general and applicable globally, but fail to understand particular contexts, specifically those in low-resource settings (LRSs), resulting, therefore, inapplicable. In particular, LRSs present a varied situation, with legal transplants of guidelines from their previous colonial regimes. This apparently theoretical issue, is, effectively, a tangible and rising matter of concern, given the ever-increasing number of MD patent applications per year, as well as the appearance of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) on the MD market itself.
This article will focus on the European Regulation on MDs 745/2017 and its applicability in LRSs, specifically presenting the case of Benin, a Sub-Saharan African country.
Methods
This work is based on a field study conducted in 2019 in Benin, which is particularly exemplar to show the complexity of the “legal transplantation” concept. A multidisciplinary approach, comprising the standard tools and methods of ethics, law, and biomedical engineering, was used to draft a heuristic hermeneutic framework, and to analyse related bioethical issues concerning Medical Device Regulations (MDRs) in LRSs, the role of Maintenance, and other sociological questions; as well as the rural population’s perception on MDs and health technologies, and the role of ethics in the hospitals of LRSs.
Results
The definition of these themes helped approach the local perspective and define the research questions. Downstream of the analysis of the Medical Devices Regulations, the Maintenance and other bioethical issues in Benin, the heuristic hermeneutic framework was created to guide a shift in the paradigm of law and regulation making, so as to make them more contextualised and inclusive, globally.
Conclusion
This article proposes a framework that will help policymakers take into account the particularism of each context, especially those of the most vulnerable countries, when drafting and issuing regulatory frameworks, promoting an ever-evolving model of universalis
Transcription of the promoter of the rat NF-1 gene depends on the integrity of an Sp1 recognition site.
The transcription start site and promoter of the rat gene coding for the transcription factor NF-1 have been identified. The NF-1 promoter was fused to the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase-coding sequence, and the resulting plasmid was transcriptionally active in the HepG2 cell line. Footprinting and gel retardation analysis indicated that the transcription factor Sp1 binds to the NF-1 promoter.
