The New Keynesian Phillips curve : lessons from single-equation econometric estimation
We review single-equation methods for estimating the hybrid New Keynesian Phillips curve (NKPC) and then apply those methods to U.S. quarterly data for 1955?2007. Estimating the hybrid NKPC by the generalized method of moments yields stable coefficients with a large role for expected future inflation. Measures of marginal costs better explain U.S. inflation than does a range of measures of the output gap. But estimates of the slope of the NKPC are imprecise and confidence intervals that are robust to weak identification are wide. Further research on measuring marginal costs may reconcile these mixed findings. A reconciliation is important if the NKPC is to remain a fundamental component of models of the monetary transmission mechanism.Inflation (Finance) ; Phillips curve
Modelling compliance threats and security analysis of cross border health data exchange
Digital health data is created, stored and processed in healthcare IT infrastructures. These infrastructures are the target of large-scale cyber-attacks and are found to be vulnerable, primarily for two main reasons: the heterogeneity of infrastructure and the numerous stakeholders (medical staff, managers, patients, regulators etc.). Furthermore, the stakeholders have different attitudes, skills, awareness and data handling practices that offer many opportunities for malicious activities. Healthcare in general is characterised by a multitude of regulations and adherence to them is essential to the functioning of the system. Compliance management is usually described in terms of risks and involves activities such as risk identification, assessment and treatment. Our paper conceptualises the notion of a “compliance threat” and discusses the security of cross-border health data ex-change. The paper presents the architecture of the System Security Modeller and illustrates the security risk assessment of the “break glass” scenario which requires health data communication in an emergency situation
Latitudinal diversity of the symbiotic dinoflagellate symbiodinium in New Zealand
This study determined the diversity of zooxanthellae (Symbiodinium sp.), harboured by the sea anemone Anthopleura aureoradiata, along a temperate latitudinal gradient in New Zealand. The anemone was collected from various sites around the three main islands of New Zealand - North Island, South Island and Stewart Island, expanding the reported range. Restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) using the digest Taq I on 18S rDNA showed clade A zooxanthellae to be present, which is in agreement with the only other previous genetic study of zooxanthellae in New Zealand (Birkenstock 2001). 30 samples were genetically sequenced, 10 each from the far north, middle and far south of New Zealand, respectively. After alignment no genetic diversity was found within or between populations. When compared to other international clade A zooxanthellar sequences from various hosts, including two temperate north Pacific sea anemones, the sequences of this study and Birkenstock (2001) grouped together into a distinct group. There are many possible reasons for clade A being harboured, and the low diversity found. Clade A zooxanthellae are hardy, adapted to high light and fluctuating environments. They are predominantly found in the shallows of tropical reef settings but are also harboured by temperate sea anemones that experience comparatively little light. A. aureoradiata experiences dramatic changes and harsh environmental conditions living in an estuarine environment, with its tentacles exposed to full sunlight; clade A may be optimal for this type of environment. The low diversity observed may be due to the lack of environmental niches or other symbiotic donors, maternal inheritance and host-symbiont specificity, isolation and genetic bottlenecks, or a combination of the previous factors. New Zealand's zooxanthellae may be endemic but further study using other genes is necessary
The invisible artist: Arrangers in popular music (1950-2000): Their contribution and techniques
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University. This thesis is based on the research conducted by the author for the series,
Richard Niles' History of Pop Arranging, seven thirty-minute documentary
programmes for BBC Radio 2, researched, written and presented by the author and
broadcast in 2003. It also draws on interviews conducted by the author (and other
research) between 2002 and 2007 both for the radio series and for this thesis and on
the author's experience as a professional arranger in popular music working with
many of the genre's significant recording artists including Paul McCartney, Ray
Charles, Cher, Tina Turner, Westlife, Tears For Fears, Dusty Springfield, James
Brown, Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue and producers including Trevor Hom, Steve
Lipson, Steve Mac and Steve Anderson.
It will be argued that the role of the arranger in popular music has often been
undervalued and that during a critical period of popular music history (1950-2000)
arrangers played a significant part in the evolution of musical content. This thesis is,
to the best of the author's knowledge, the first time (apart from the above mentioned
documentary) the subject has ever been examined. The arranger is "invisible" because musical arrangers are often un-credited on
record liner notes or in books or articles concerning popular music. A considerable
amount of research has been necessary to determine who wrote many of the
arrangements considered herein. Motown's Berry Gordy purposely kept the names of
musicians and arrangers off the records because he feared others might 'poach' the
trademark 'Motown Sound'. Other record labels considered the job of the arranger to
be reminiscent of an earlier era, diluting the Rock 'n' Roll image of emotion and
spontanaeity they wished to promote. Some producers and recording artists disliked
sharing credit for their work. Motown arranger David Van dePitte told the author that
arranging was "thankless and anonymous - a very service-oriented profession where
others often take credit for what you've done." Arranging has therefore remained an
intrinsically unseen art created by 'invisible' artists. By analyzing many recordings,
revealing the techniques and concepts they have used in their work to create popular
records, arrangers and their art will be made more 'visible'

Applying the Hirose-Kamada filter to Swiss data: Output gap and exchange rate pass-through estimates
Multivariate filters based on the Hodrick-Prescott filter are appealing because they combine the advantages of the Hodrick-Prescott filter with economic relationships. Recently, a new multivariate filter has been put forward by Hirose and Kamada (2003). In this article we apply this new filter to Swiss data spanning the period from 1981 to 2005. We estimate both potential output and the associated output gap with quarterly data. Moreover, a model-consistent Phillips curve for an open economy is derived from simple economic relationships. Based on the estimated Phillips curve, we investigate exchange-rate pass through effects on consumer prices. We find only a weak transmission of exchange rate fluctuations into consumer prices.potential output, output gap, multivariate filter, Hirose and Kamada filter, exchange-rate pass through
Improving the Mental Health of Surgical Teams Through Operating Room Design
Objective: In this study, we aim to develop and propose an evaluation method for analyzing the design of operating rooms (ORs) from the perspective of surgical teams' reported experiences and stress levels. Background: Stress and burnout of surgical team members can lead to diminished performance and medical errors, which endangers the safety of both the patients and team members. The design and layout of the OR play a critical role in managing such stress. Methods: To understand surgical teams' spatial needs related to their experiences and stress, we administered a survey and in-depth focus group discussions to three surgical teams from the same organization. The identified spatial needs were translated into functional scenarios and spatial metrics, essentially viewing the OR through the perspective of users. Results: Our analysis revealed four integral sections-patient flow, room organization, access to facilities/medical equipment/support staff/team members, and staff well-being-identified as critical design factors associated with the experiences and stress levels of the surgical teams in the ORs.Conclusions: We expect this method to serve as a tool for evaluating the effect of the design of OR layouts on stress, thereby supporting the well-being and resiliency of surgical teams.
Transgressing the moral economy: Wheelerism and management of the nationalised coal industry in Scotland
This article illuminates the links between managerial style and political economy in post-1945 Britain, and explores the origins of the 1984–1985 miners' strike, by examining in longer historical context the abrasive attitudes and policies of Albert Wheeler, Scottish Area Director of the National Coal Board (NCB). Wheeler built on an earlier emphasis on production and economic criteria, and his micro-management reflected pre-existing centralising tendencies in the industries. But he was innovative in one crucial aspect, transgressing the moral economy of the Scottish coalfield, which emphasised the value of economic security and changes by joint industrial agreement
