Phillips curve in a small open economy: A time series exploration of North Cyprus
The paper explores the existence and the stability of Phillips curve for North Cyprus, a small developing economy, using time series data. ADF unit root test is employed to check for stationarity. ARDL and DOLS approaches to cointegration have been used to explore the long run relation and ECM to understand short run dynamics. The predictive properties DOLS are better than those of the conventional methods. The estimates point to the existence of Phillips curve both in the long and the short run. CUSUM and CUSUMsq tests confirm a stable relation.Inflation, Unemployment, ADF, Cointegration, DOLS
Change of regime and Phillips curve stability:The case of Spain, 1964-2002
Traditional Phillips curves relating inflation to a measure of the level of activity, and augmented to include past inflation (assumed to proxy expected inflation), have been thought to be highly unstable over time. In this paper we try to investigate, using recent econometric developments, whether such a statement can be supported over a long time period. In the empirical application, we analyze the case of Spain along the period 1964 to 2002.Structural changes, Inflation, Phillips curve

Stress responsiveness in adult life: influence of mother's diet in late pregnancy
CONTEXT: Men and women whose mothers ate an unbalanced high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet in late pregnancy have raised blood pressure. We recently showed that they also have raised fasting plasma cortisol concentrations. Because raised fasting cortisol concentrations probably reflect a greater response to the stress of fasting and venesection, we suspected that this diet may have led to increased stress responsiveness in the adult offspring. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine whether an unbalanced high-protein diet during pregnancy is associated with increased cortisol secretion in response to psychological stress in the offspring. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: Salivary cortisol concentrations were measured during a modified Trier Social Stress Test in 70 men and women aged 36.3 yr whose mothers had taken part in a dietary intervention in which they were advised to eat 1 pound (0.45 kg) of red meat daily during pregnancy and to avoid carbohydrate-rich foods. RESULTS: The offspring of women who reported greater consumption of meat and fish in the second half of pregnancy had higher cortisol concentrations during the Trier Test. Compared with the offspring of mothers who had reported eating no more than 13 meat/fish portions per week, the average cortisol concentrations were raised by 22% (95% confidence interval, 13 to 71%) and 46% (5 to 103%) in the offspring of those eating 14-16 and at least 17 portions per week, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide the first human evidence that an unbalanced high protein maternal diet during late pregnancy leads to increased cortisol secretion in response to psychological stress in the offsprin
A celebration of academic & industry collaboration: the RNLI and maritime engineering innovation
Search and rescue (SAR) craft have to endure the toughest conditions in order to save lives at sea. The design, resourcing, operation and support of a SAR fleet requires state-of-the-art technology and an ability to react to and exploit cutting edge research and foment future research agenda. This paper reviews the unique relationships that exist between the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and academia to drive engineering innovations to the forefront of RNLI search and rescue craft and in particular the legacy of the Advanced Technology Partnership.<br/
Characterisation of spontaneous and stimulated emission from Praseodymium (Pr3+) ions doped into a silica based monomode optical fibre
The fluorescence spectrum of praseodymium in a silica host has been investigated through the direct excitation of the 3P0, 1D2, and 1G4 absorption bands, which occur at around 488, 590, and 974 nm, respectively. The observed spontaneous emission consists of four main bands with peaks at 633, 707, 888, and 1080 nm. In each case the level principally responsible for these emissions was found to be 1D2. Stimulated emission has been seen for the first time at 888 nm for a threshold of 10 mW absorbed power. In addition, the lasing characteristics at 1080 nm have been investigated
Inflation and Unemployment in the U.S. and Canada: A Common Framework
This paper summarizes the results of our efforts to broaden the theory of the Phillips curve and to explain the joint evolution of inflation and unemployment in the United States and Canada since 1930.Phillips curve, unemployment, inflation
R.M. Simmons presentation, Rena Smart book review
R.M. Simmons of the Gospel Music Workshop of America gives a presentation on the African influence in the African American religious experience. He explains how African slaves brought to America their concept of music (utilitarian concept of music). Simmons further discusses the fusion between the utilitarian concept and the Western concept of religion resulting in spirituals. He also describes hymn categories in early forms of formal African American worship experiences. Simmons takes questions from the audience among which is Dr. Riggins Earl Jr. Video concludes with a book review on Christian Theology and Ethics by Rena Smart. The Atlanta University Center Robert W. Inflation-Unemployment Tradeoff and Regional Labor Market Data
We estimate a linear and a piecewise linear Phillips curve model with regional labor market data for West German and Neue Länder. Employing regional observations allows us to country difference the data. This eliminates, under the assumption of homogeneous Länder, supply shocks and changes in the formation of expectations as possible identification failures. With seemingly unrelated regressions we find a flat Phillips curve in the Neue Länder. For the West German Länder a piecewise linear model with a higher inflation-unemployment tradeoff for the regime of low unemployment rates fits the data very well. The results hold true if we control for endogeneity of the unemployment rate. With a kinked but upward sloping aggregate supply curve there seems to be room for stabilization policies, at least in the range of aggregate demand shifts that our data covers.inflation-unemployment tradeoff, NAIRU, regional labor market data, seemingly unrelated regression
