The influence of Andrew Craig Phillips on North Carolina local superintendents
Full text linkCraig Phillips was the North Carolina State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1968-1988, longer than any other holder of that office. This study investigates the impact of his tenure as state superintendent on local superintendents. Accordingly, the study had four purposes. The first was to determine to what extent Craig Phillips' behavior influenced local administrative procedure. The second purpose was to determine whether age, years in office, size of administrative unit, geographical region, or Phillips' tenure affected local superintendents' perceptions of Phillips and/or his administration. The third was to determine which statewide implemented programs during Phillips' tenure were attributed to Phillips and/or his administration. Finally, the fourth purpose was to examine how local superintendents would select the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The study was based on interviews with local superintendents in Region 8 and a Likert-scaled survey mailed to all of the 139 local superintendents in North Carolina

Father Andrew Mullen 1790-1818: a study in early nineteenth century spirituality
Full text linkThis thesis is laid out in three parts: Part I. The life and death of Andrew Mullen. The life is based, to a large extent, on a long letter to his mother, Catherine Mullen, dated 7 January 1810. The letter gives a definite insight into his spirituality based on his membership of the Archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. There is a hint that he had a premonition of an early death. Part II. The burial of Andrew Mullen and the immediate cult to him This is based on documentary evidence. Part III. Most of this part is a catalogue of testimonies taken from 1993 onwards. Then there is the conclusion on the popular devotion to Andrew Mullen stressing the theological aspect of the subject. In the course of writing the thesis it was decided to separate the documentary evidence from the oral tradition. This was advantageous in developing the thesis, and the documents provided a secure basis for the oral tradition. Two pieces of information were found in March 1997. They are death notices: 2 January 1819, The Leinster Journal and 7 January 1819, The Car low Morning Post. There is a slight discrepancy between the two on the date of his death. Also this discrepancy shows a slight difference from the date of the tombstone

Are Phillips curves useful for forecasting inflation?
Full text linkThis study evaluates the conventional wisdom that modern Phillips curve-based models are useful tools for forecasting inflation. These models are based on the non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment (the NAIRU). The study compares the accuracy, over the last 15 years, of three sets of inflation forecasts from NAIRU models to the naive forecast that at any date inflation will be the same over the next year as it has been over the last year. The conventional wisdom is wrong; none of the NAIRU forecasts is more accurate than the naive forecast. The likelihood of accurately predicting a change in the inflation rate from these three forecasts is no better than the likelihood of accurately predicting a change based on a coin flip. The forecasts include those from a textbook NAIRU model, those from two models similar to Stock and Watson's, and those produced by the Federal Reserve Board.Inflation (Finance) ; Forecasting ; Phillips curve

Full text linkA 1977 amendment to the Federal Reserve Act states that the Fed’s mandate is “to promote effectively the goals of maximum employment, stable prices, and moderate long-term interest rates.” Moderate long-term interest rates require low and stable inflation. Monetary policymakers use instruments such as a short-term interest rate to guide the economy with the aim of achieving an inflation objective. To help guide their decisions, monetary policymakers benefit from having a reliable theory of how inflation is determined, one that relates the setting of their instrument to the unexpected events that hit the economy and consequently to the rate of inflation and other economic variables. In “Inflation Dynamics and the New Keynesian Phillips Curve,” Keith Sill examines a prominent theory of how inflation is determined, as articulated in what is called the New Keynesian Phillips curve.
