Constestualizzando il mirto. Temi, usi e costumi del mirto nell'Età del Bronzo nel Mediterraneo Orientale

The properties of a plant determine its meaning. The presence within an ecosystem determines its preciousness. Sacredness and nature are elements that go hand in hand, when a natural element is recognized as valuable, it assumes a certain role within the sacred and social imagination. Just like the palm in Mesopotamia, which is defined as “providence” thanks to its ability to provide fruit and wood, the myrtle, although less known to archaeologists, is not to be considered less important. Its presence in the iconography remains more difficult to identify, the references in epigraphs less clear, however, some archaeological contexts and lexical comparisons, attest its presence throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. The representation of one plant with respect to another denotes a knowledge of the same and its principles; in this case the myrtle is attested in written sources since the Early Bronze Age, known for its healing properties, however, the identification in the iconography still remains rather difficult and ambiguous. But, despite this, by placing the identifications in the paintings and its presence within epigraphic contexts, they make it possible to deduce its role within sacred and social contexts

Sacred water. Pools and rituals in southern Mesopotamia during the III millennium BC.

    No full text
In southern Mesopotamia during the III millennium BC, the sacred pools, erected within urban centres to emulate the natural landscape (lakes and rivers), denote the ability of human beings to manipulate the morphology of the territory at will, recreating natural phenomena even where they are not present. Through comparison of texts and iconographies, the rituals related to the sacred bath and the relationship between nature and seasonal cycles will be highlighted. Furthermore, this research will try to de ne how environmental interfaces, climatic changes, and the cycle of heavenly bodies have in uenced rituality. The myths, which often accompany seasonal rituals, aim to present merely functional acts in terms of ideal situations. However, the myth must not be considered as a mere extension of the rite, but rather as the expression of a parallel aspect inherent in it from the beginning with the function, within the seasonal model, of translating the individual case into durative and absolute terms

Contextualization and semantics of landscape in the Late Bronze paintings of Qatna

Plants and animals, water and mountains have always been one of the focal parts of iconography and liter- ary texts in the ancient Near East. The landscape and the climate, which have greatly changed since the 2nd millennium BC, have been one of the major sources of inspiration for the generation of iconographic myths and leitmotifs. Starting from the Sumerian and Akkadian disputations, in which the fauna and botanical landscape play a predominant part, it is possible to note how nature, climate and sea- sons are a rather relevant aspect within the imagination of Syria and Mesopotamia. In particular, the excavations in Syria have brought to light valuable pictorial decorations dated to the Late Bronze Age. The scienti c debate, very heated right from the start, regarding the production of the iconog- raphies, has numerous hypotheses about their style and origin. M.H. Feldman, re ecting on the Late Bronze Age paintings of Qatna, spoke of an ante li eram globalisation, advancing the hypothesis that the mixture of workers from di erent regions of the Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean, had favoured the development of internationalisms. However, in addition to the productions and styles, in this case the part inherent to the semantics coherent with the iconographies will also be addressed, comparing them with the sacred and cosmogonic texts of the time

Verifica e progettazione sismica prestazionale di strutture • ospedaliere - parte I: impostazione del problema

    No full text

Structural robustness analysis of RC frames under seismic and blast chained loads scenarios

    No full text
In this paper the structural robustness assessment of concrete frame buildings under blast and under earthquake blast hazard chain scenarios is investigated. A deterministic methodology for connecting the robustness with the blast hazard intensity and for conducting the robustness analysis under earthquake-triggered blast is presented and applied to a 3D RC frame building by implementing nonlinear time history analyses considering both plastic behavior and large displacements. A preliminary sensitivity analysis on a 2D frame is conducted to identify the critical analysis parameters influencing the results. The robustness curves (residual structural capacity versus the level of damage occurring in the structure), evaluated both for the blast-only and for the earthquake-blast chained cases, are compared by considering different explosion locations inside the building (location of the blast-induced structural damage). Results show that neglecting the chained load scenarios would lead to the identification of an erroneous location as critical for the structural robustness performance
