Monitoring Progressive Multiple Sclerosis with Novel Imaging Techniques.
Imaging markers for monitoring disease progression in progressive multiple sclerosis (PMS) are scarce, thereby limiting the possibility to monitor disease evolution and to test effective treatments in clinical trials. Advanced imaging techniques that have the advantage of metrics with increased sensitivity to short-term tissue changes and increased specificity to the structural abnormalities characteristic of PMS have recently been applied in clinical trials of PMS. In this review, we (1) provide an overview of the pathological features of PMS, (2) summarize the findings of research and clinical trials conducted in PMS which have applied conventional and advanced magnetic resonance imaging techniques and (3) discuss recent advancements and future perspectives in monitoring PMS with imaging techniques
La legittimità della guerra nell’ideologia degli Ordini religioso-militari: il caso dei Templari
The First Crusade had gathered together a new cavalry in defence of Christianity and of the Church of Rome, which was composed of milites whose aim was the liberation of the soul by means of exercising a military role. This was made possible thanks to the ideological glorification of the profession of arms and to the Christianisation of the cavalry, which was by then no longer a secular militia but rather a religious community of warriors at the service of faith, the Church and the Christian society. This contribution will examine this process of legitimation, the profound and difficult reflection within the Christian world dating back to the Gregorian Reforms, and the role of the monacus-miles as a member of the Knights Templar, a peculiar monastic organisation based on the uncommon bond between religious and military tasks
3D Modelling to Support Dental Surgery
In a previous work, we developed a general purpose framework to support the three-dimensional reconstruction,
rendering and processing of biomedical images, 3D Bio-IPF. In this paper we present a structured component of 3D Bio-IPF, the
plug-in Implant, to model customised dental implants on a three-dimensional representation of the oral cavity derived from
diagnostic images. The proposed tool was tested on different cases and a result is reported. It has been proven it is very effective for
dental surgery planning, implant design and positioning. Moreover, if integrated with a position indicator system and a numerically
positionable drilling machine, it could be employed for semi-automatic surgery
Founding and deserting settlements in southern Italy during the Middle Ages: Terra d’Otranto (11th c.–15th c.)
This paper will discuss the dynamics of anthropization and human settlements in the Salento between the 11th and 15th centuries when the area comprising today’s provinces of Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto underwent significant transformations and reorganisation, which often, and at times also deeply, redesigned the picture of its rural population. The most complex implications occurred mainly during the second half of the 13th century, due to the changes brought about by the coexistence and interdependence of two processes, abandonment and new-founding, which have clearly influenced the structure of urban and rural geography of the area. The process of redefining human settlements affected more the north-western Salento, the area between Taranto, Nardò, Brindisi and Lecce, marked by the conversion to cereal-growing on lands previously used for the cultivation of vines and olives
Corti signorili e committenza letteraria nel Mezzogiorno d’Italia (sec. XV).
During the fifteenth century, some noble courts of Southern Italy, sensitive to the charm of the trends and tastes of national culture, became more promoters of an interesting literary production than others. In Terra d’Otranto, after the initiatives linked to the names of Maria d’Enghien and her son Giovanni Antonio Orsini del Balzo, it is around the count of Ugento, Angilberto del Balzo, that one of the most important centers of aggregation and stimulation of the province’s cultural heritage developed. Belonging to a collateral branch of the family of the Prince of Taranto, the count hosted a rich and valuable library in his home. The essay, drawing on the information contained in the Registers of the Orsinian Chancellery and, above all, on the Angilbertian inventories, aims to describe the book heritage available to the feudal class of Salento, commissioned to enrich the private collections of men and women of power, to satisfy their tastes, curiosity and thirst for knowledge

Efficient constitutive model for continuous micro-modeling of masonry structures
This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis Group in International Journal of Architectural Heritage on 2023, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/15583058.2022.2124133.Masonry is a composite material often modeled as an equivalent homogenous material. However, the complexity of its micro-structure leads to complex mechanical responses, which are almost impossible to capture accurately with homogenous constitutive models. Micro-modeling can be used in these scenarios, allowing for the explicit modeling of microstructural components, leading to an accurate capturing of their interaction. Its main drawback is the computational cost, which often makes this approach suitable only for the simulation of small specimens. This is especially true due to strain-softening leading to severe instabilities and non-convergence of the solution. The objective of this work is to propose a simple yet effective constitutive plastic-damage model for the microstructural components of masonry. It is based on a damage model previously developed by the authors. For a better representation of the cyclic response of masonry, plasticity is added using a simplified implementation that does not strictly follow the rules of standard elastoplasticity, allowing an explicit computation of the stress tensor from the strain tensor without the need for an iterative loop at the material level. To reduce the numerical issues related to strain-softening and thus improve the stability of the solution, an IM-PLEX integration algorithm is adopted. The last author gratefully acknowledges the financial support from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of the Spanish Government (MCIU), the State Agency of Research (AEI), as well as that of the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) through the project SEVERUS (Multilevel evaluation of seismic vulnerability and risk mitigation of masonry buildings in resilient historical urban centres, ref. num.
