Imagining the World: The Significance of Religious Worldviews for Science Education
This paper begins by examining whether ‘science’ and ‘religion’ can better be seen as distinct or related worldviews, focusing particularly on scientific and religious understandings of biodiversity. I then explore how people can see the natural world, depending on their worldview, by looking at two contrasting treatments of penguin behaviour, namely that provided in the film March of the Penguins and in the children’s book And Tango Makes Three. I end by drawing some initial conclusions as to what might and what might not be included about religion in school science lessons. Science educators and teachers need to take account of religious worldviews if some students are better to understand the compass of scientific thinking and some of science’s key conclusions. It is perfectly possible for a science teacher to be respectful of the worldviews that students occupy, even if these are scientifically limited, while clearly and non-apologetically helping them to understand the scientific worldview on a particular issue

The memoir was written in 1986 in the USA and was edited by the author's son Nathan M. Reiss. Irma Reiss was the second child of three of Bertha and Leopold Goldblum. The family lived Heppenheim an der Bergstrasse, which had a small Jewish community. Her father was a shoemaker. Description of domestic life in rural Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. Recollection of Sabbath preparations in her family. Memories of school life. Hebrew lessons with her uncle Friedmann, who was the cantor and shochet of the town. Visits to relatives in Rossdorf by Darmstadt. Recollections of World War One. Her father Leopold, an Austrian citizen from Galicia, served in the Austrian Army. Celebration of the high holidays. Recollection of Irma Reiss' schooldays in Heppenheim, where she was a well-liked student. Irma and her sister were members of the local Jewish youth movement "Blau Weiss". Their group leaders were Rafael and Eva Buber, children of Martin Buber, who lived in Heppenheim and was very supportive of the youth movement. At age 14 Irma was sent to her uncle's family to help taking care of the children. She took continued education classes. Afterwards she worked as a "house daughter" with a religious family in Frankfurt. Irma became a member of the Agudas Yisroel. After the Nazi take-over in Germany their American relatives provided them with affidavits to join them in the States. Growing anti-Semitism. Irma Goldblum left Germany on September 15th, 1938. Her parents stayed behind because her father, who was born in Galicia, still had to wait for his affidavit due to the Polish quota regulations. Difficulties in starting a new life in New York. Worries about her parents in Germany. During the night of the November Pogrom in 1938 her father was arrested and sent to Dachau concentration camp. After three weeks he was released and was able to leave together with his wife for the States. Support of their relatives to start a new life.Irma Goldblum got married to Leonhard Reiss in December 1939. Thei had two sons, Nathan and Barry Reiss.The author was born 1910 as Irma Goldblum into an orthodox Jewish family in Heppenheim an der Bergstrasse, Germany. Irma was a member of the Jewish youth movement "Blau Weiss" and worked as a "house daughter" in Frankfurt. Is how you say it more important than what you say?: issue framing In controversial public policy discourse : the cases of needle exchange and stem cell research in New Jersey
Framing an issue often sets the parameters of any public policy debate, including healthcare, and Issue Framing may predetermine the outcome. Can Issue Framing explain why New Jersey, a traditionally activist state, played a leading role on Stem Cell Research while lagging behind on Needle Exchange programs? It is hypothesized that Issue Framing will play a large role in explaining this legislative dichotomy. This hypothesis was found to be partially correct after analyzing both primary and secondary sources. Issue Framing was found to play a role in the debate phase of the policy process, but other factors also contributed to the different paths of Needle Exchange and Stem Cell Research in New Jersey.Ph. Transaction Costs in Dealer Markets: Evidence From The London Stock Exchange
This paper describes regularities in the intraday spreads and prices quoted by dealers on the London Stock Exchange. It develops a measure of spread-related transaction costs, one that recognizes dealers' willingness to price trades within their quoted spreads. This measure of transaction costs shows that trading costs are systematically related to a trade's size, characteristics of the trading counterparties, and security characteristics. Customers pay the full spread on small trades while medium to large trades receive more favorable execution. Market makers only discount very large customer trades while dealers regularly discount medium to large trades. Inter-dealer trades generally receive favorable execution, and discounts increase in size. Market makers do not discount trades with each other over the phone, but do discount when trading anonymously using inter-dealer-brokers. Quoted and touch spreads are falling in the number of market makers. The rate of decline is interpreted as reflecting economies of scale in market making.
