Flexibility from district heating to decrease wind power integration costs
Variable power sources (e.g. wind, photovoltaics) increase the value of flexibility in the power system. This paper investigates the benefits of combining electric heat boilers, heat pumps, CHP plants and heat storages in a district heating network when the share of variable power increases considerably. The results are based on scenarios made with a generation planning model Balmorel [1]. Balmorel optimises investments and operation of heat and power plants, including heat storages. It uses hourly resolution and enforces temporal continuity in the use of the heat storages. Scenarios with high amount of wind power were investigated and the paper describes how the increase in variability changes the profitability and operation of different district heating options in more detail than was described in the article by Kiviluoma and Meibom [2]. Results show that district heating systems could offer significant and cost-effective flexibility to facilitate the integration of variable power. Furthermore, the combination of different technologies offers the largest advantage. The results imply that, if the share of variable power becomes large, heat storages should become an important part of district heating networks
Unit commitment for systems with significant wind penetration
The stochastic nature of wind alters the unit commitment and dispatch problem. By accounting for this uncertainty when scheduling the system, more robust schedules are produced, which should, on average, reduce expected costs. In this paper, the effects of stochastic wind and load on the unit commitment and dispatch of power systems with high levels of wind power are examined. By comparing the costs, planned operation and performance of the schedules produced, it is shown that stochastic optimization results in less costly, of the order of 0.25%, and better performing schedules than deterministic optimization. The impact of planning the system more frequently to account for updated wind and load forecasts is then examined. More frequent planning means more up to date forecasts are used, which reduces the need for reserve and increases performance of the schedules. It is shown that mid merit and peaking units and the interconnection are the most affected parts of the system where uncertainty of wind is concernedpower generation dispatch; power system economics; stochastic systems; wind power generation
Der Kommentar zum hippokratischen Eid von Johann Heinrich Meibom. Medizin und Philologie im frühen 17. Jhdt.
Parallel erschienen als Druckausgabe bei FAU University Press, ISBN: 978-3-96147-705-0Johann Heinrich Meibom (1590-1655), a physician from Helmstedt, wrote a complex and erudite commentary on the Hippocratic Oath (1643). This book approaches the commentary from different fronts; the author – his life and work -, the Hippocratic Oath and its textual tradition and Meibom’s commentary as a text and a book. Thanks to the analysis of different sources and archives, it was possible to reconstruct the writing process of chapter 15th of Meibom’s Commentary, devoted to the Hippocratic Oath clause about abortion. As part of the analysis, this book presents a new interpretation of this Hippocratic clause, not as an anti-abortion but anti-gynaecological-harm clause. This book also offers a reflection inspired by Meibom’s sources to deal with the still-existing problem of abortion.

Operating the Irish power system with increased levels of wind power
This paper summarises some of the main impacts of large amounts of wind power installed in the island of Ireland. Using results from various studies performed on this system, it is shown that wind power will impact on all time frames, from seconds to daily planning of the system operation. Results from studies examining operation of the system with up to approximately 40% of electricity provided by wind show that some of the most important aspects to be considered include the type of wind turbine technology, the provision of reserve to accommodate wind forecasting error and the method used to plan plant schedules
The Edition of Marcus Meibom’s Aristoxeni Harmonicorum Elementorum Libri Tres and its Contribution to the Knowledge of Ancient Greek Music Theory in the 17th Century
In Antiquae musicae auctores septem graece et latine (Meibom 1652), Marcus Meibom edited, translated and annotated the most important treatises on ancient Greek music theory, including the pioneeristic work of Aristoxenus of Tarentum, the author traditionally regarded as the major musical authority of antiquity: the Elementa Harmonica. This paper seeks to assess the value of Meibom’s contribution to the understanding and the reevaluation, in modern times, of this ancient Greek theorist
Impact of wind power on the unit commitment, operating reserves and market design
Paper presented at the 2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting, San Diego, CA, 24-29 July 2011This article highlights and demonstrates the new requirements variable and partly unpredictable wind power will bring to unit commitment and power system operations.
Current practice is described and contrasted against the new requirements. Literature specifically addressing questions about wind power and unit commitment related power system operations is surveyed. The scope includes forecast errors, operating reserves, intra-day markets, and sharing reserves across interconnections. The discussion covers the critical issues arising from the research.Science Foundation Irelandau, ti, ke, ab, co - TS 10.04.1
