Noble Gas Radioisotopes: 37Ar, 85Kr, 39Ar, 81Kr
Noble gases are chemically inert and therefore at least some of the complications that are common in interpreting isotope data are absent when working with such tracers. The dependence of their solubility on temperature makes it possible to determine the recharge temperature of recent and paleo groundwaters (Stute and Schlosser; Chapter 11). In this chapter we focus on specific radioactive isotopes of two noble gases, argon and krypton, which occur in trace quantities. These isotopes provide information on when recharge took place, because of their known source functions and decay rates. Four nuclides exist that have been measured in groundwater: 37Ar (half-life 35 days), 85Kr (half-life 10.76 years), 39Ar (half-life 269 years) and 81Kr (half-life 229 000 years). Unfortunately, the concentrations of all four isotopes are very small in subsurface waters and consequently analytical procedures are rather complicated. Nevertheless, very valuable results have been achieved in a number of groundwater studies. Since the number of dating tools is quite limited in hydrogeology, any additional information is welcome even if the analytical effort is considerably higher than for some other tracers. In particular, noble gas radioisotopes have been used in combination with more conventional groundwater dating methods, to investigate mixing of waters of different ages: 3H and 85Kr are applicable for young groundwaters (<40 yrs) (this combination is especially useful since the two input functions are different), 39Ar and 14C are appropriate for older groundwaters (50–20 000 yrs) and 8lKr and 36C1 for very old groundwaters (up to 106 yrs). Where such mixing occurs, the use of a single tracer will never be sufficient to characterise the age distribution. In general, as many tracers as possible should be used to cover the time ranges considered to be adequate for a specific hydrogeological situation
Zechariah 9-14 as the substructure of 1 Peter’s eschatological program
The principal aim of this study is to discern what has shaped the author of 1 Peter to regard Christian suffering as a necessary (1.6) and to-be-expected (4.12) component of faithful allegiance to Jesus Christ. Most research regarding suffering in 1 Peter has limited the scope of inquiry to two particular aspects—its cause and nature, and the strategies that the author of 1 Peter employs in order to enable his addressees to respond in faithfulness. There remains, however, the need for a comprehensive explanation for the source that has generated 1 Peter’s theology of Christian suffering. If Jesus truly is the Christ, God’s chosen redemptive agent who has come to restore God’s people, then how can it be that Christian suffering is a necessary part of discipleship after his coming, death and resurrection? What led the author of 1 Peter to such a startling conclusion, which seems to runs against the grain of the eschatological hopes and expectations of Jewish restoration ideology?
This thesis analyzes the appropriation of shepherd and fiery trials imagery,
and argues that the author of 1 Peter is dependent upon Zechariah 9-14 for his
theology of Christian suffering. Said in another way, the eschatological program of
Zechariah 9-14, read through the lens of the Gospel, functions as the substructure
for 1 Peter’s eschatology and thus its theology of Christian suffering.
In support of this hypothesis, this study highlights the fact that Zechariah 9-
14 was available and appropriated in early Christianity, in particular in the Passion
Narrative tradition; that the shepherd imagery of 1 Pet 2.25 is best understood
within the milieu of the Passion Narrative tradition, and that it alludes to the
eschatological program of Zechariah 9-14; that the fiery trials imagery found in 1
Peter 1.6-7 and 1 Pet 4.12 is distinct from that which we find in Greco-Roman and OT
wisdom sources, and that it shares exclusive parallels with some unique features of
the eschatological program of Zechariah 9-14; that Zechariah 9-14 offers a more
satisfying explanation for the modification of Isa 11.2 in 1 Pet 4.14, the transition
from 4.12-19 to 5.1-4, why Peter has oriented his letter with the term διασπορά,
and why he has described his addresses as οἶκος τοῦ θεοῦ; and finally that 1 Peter
contains an implicit foundational narrative that shares distinct parallels with the
eschatological program of Zechariah 9-14.
We can conclude that 1 Peter offers a unique vista into the way in which at
least one early Christian witness came to understand and to communicate the fact
that Christian suffering was a necessary feature of faithful allegiance to Jesus Christ
Post-orogenic Mesozoic basins and magmatism
This chapter describes the later Mesozoic history of Queensland, when the broad epicratonic basins that underlie most of the state west of the Great Dividing Range received the greater part of their sediment infill after ~210 Ma(middle Norian). The final major orogenic event—the Hunter Bowen Orogeny—had abated in the Tasmanides. These basins preserve relatively thin sedimentary successions that extend over about two-thirds of the area of the state..
Predictions for the fracture toughness of cancellous bone of fracture neck of femur patients
Current protocol in determining if a patient is osteoporotic and their fracture risk is based on dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). DXA gives an indication of their bone mineral density (BMD) which is the product of both the porosity and density of the mineralized bone tissue; this is usually taken at the hip. The DXA results are assessed using the fracture risk assessment tool as recommended by the World Health Organization. While this provides valuable data on a person’s fracture risk advancements in medical imagining technology enables development of more robust and accurate risk assessment tools. In order to develop such tools in vitro analysis of bone is required to assess the morphological properties of bone osteoporotic bone tissue and how these pertain to the fracture toughness (Kcmax) of the tissue.Support was provided by the EPSRC (EP/K020196: Point-ofCare High Accuracy Fracture Risk Prediction), the UK Department of Transport under the BOSCOS (Bone Scanning for Occupant Safety) project, and approved by Gloucester and Cheltenham NHS Trust hospitals under ethical consent (BOSCOS – Mr. Curwen CI REC ref 01/179G)
Holocene environmental change at Lake Shudu, Yunnan Province, southwestern China
A Holocene palaeorecord from Lake Shudu, Yunnan Province, southwestern China is dominated by (1) a pronounced basin-wide sedimentary hiatus after ca. 7.2 kcal yr BP, spanning some 4,000 years and (2) significant changes in sediment source/supply and an increase in heavy metal influx coupled with a shift to more eutrophic lake conditions from ca. 0.9 kcal yr BP, lasting ~300 years. The hiatus is most likely a due to a significant and abrupt reduction in sedimentation rates, the driver of which is unclear; although it appears likely to have been climatically driven. The environmental changes captured in the Lake Shudu palaeorecord provide unambiguous evidence of late Holocene anthropogenic activity, most likely linked to mining activity
Additional bryophyte taxa from the Cook Islands
It is evident that the bryophyte flora of the Cook Islands remains poorly documented. Here, ten moss species and five liverwort species of Lepidoziaceae are newly reported for the Cook Islands. These records include Calomnion denticulatum, previously known only from Samoa, Ectropothecium viridifolium, previously known only from Hawai’i, and Tricholepidozia quadriseta, previously known only from Australia. Also, thirteen new island records of mosses are reported for Outer Islands of the group and additional information is provided for some previously published report

The recording and analysis of a burnt mound and adjacent palaeochannel deposits on the floodplain of the River Soar in Leicestershire revealed that the burnt mound was in use, possibly for a number of different purposes, at the transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. An extensive radiocarbon dating programme indicated that the site was revisited. Human remains from the palaeochannel comprised the remains of three individuals, two of whom pre-dated the burnt mound by several centuries while the partial remains of a third, dating from the Late Bronze Age, provided evidence that this individual had met a violent death. These finds, along with animal bones dating to the Iron Age, and the remains of a bridge from the early medieval period, suggest that people were drawn to this location over a long period of time
