"These narratives of racial passing have risen from the dead": redefining racial passing in the twentieth and twenty-first century literary imagination
Instead of concurring with most critics that racial passing literature reached its apex during the Harlem Renaissance, this project highlights its persistence, as evidenced in the texts examined from 1900 to 2014. Using psychoanalysis, this dissertation recovers non-canonical and white-authored narratives that critics overlook, thus reconceptualizing the genre of passing literature to forge a new genealogy for this tradition. This new genealogy includes novels, life writings, and short stories. In arguing for the genre’s continued relevance and production, this project offers a rejoinder to critics who contend that racial passing literature is obsolete. Part one of this dissertation complicates the notion that characters pass only in response to witnessing a lynching or to improve their socioeconomic status, by asserting that racial passing begins in the classroom for male characters and at home for their female counterparts. It thus precedes the threat of violence or middle class aspirations. Whereas the first half of this project is preoccupied with the gendered beginnings of racial passing, the second half examines its effects, on both writing and death. This project explores racial passing in Charles Chesnutt’s The House Behind the Cedars (1900), James Weldon Johnson’s The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man (1912), Jessie Fauset’s Plum Bun (1929), Vera Caspary’s The White Girl (1929), Alice Dunbar-Nelson’s The Stones of the Village (1988), Danzy Senna’s Caucasia (1999), Philip Roth’s The Human Stain (2000), Bliss Broyard’s One Drop (2003) and Anita Reynolds’ American Cocktail (2014).Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Donavan L. Health Hazard Evaluation Report: HETA-93-0816-2371: Southwest Airlines, Houston Hobby Airport; Houston, Texas
In response to an employee request, an investigation was begun into aircraft ground crew exposures to diesel and gasoline engine exhaust at Southwest Airlines (SIC-4512), at Houston Hobby Airport, Houston, Texas. Complaints centered around emissions from fuel trucks and belt loaders. All diesel equipment at the site used JP4 fuel rather than diesel as it was readily available. No emissions control equipment was used on any gasoline or diesel equipment. Employees suffered transient eye and throat irritation. Samples were taken for elemental carbon (7440440) (Ce), carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO), and nitrogen-dioxide (10102440) (NO2). A ramp agent experienced the highest exposure concentration of Ce, 14.8 micrograms/cubic meter, while an area sample in the jetway area showed the lowest, 1.8 micrograms/cubic meter. Personal breathing zone exposures to diesel exhaust were similar to other studies of truck drivers. Full shift personal sample results for CO ranged from 3 to 7 parts per million (ppm). The highest instantaneous peak concentrations were 91 and 111ppm, still under the NIOSH ceiling limit of 200ppm. No sample gave detectable amounts of NO2. The author concludes that a health hazard from exposures to CO or NO2 was not found at the time of the survey. The author recommends that efforts be made to control exposures to a greater extent
Health Hazard Evaluation Report: HETA-93-0351-2413: Goodwill Industries of America, Inc.; Bethesda, Maryland
In response to an employee request, a health hazard evaluation was conducted at the Goodwill Industries of America (SIC-8399), Bethesda, Maryland concerning indoor environmental quality issues. Concern had been expressed over potential exposures to print shop solvents, secondhand smoke, and water damaged carpeting in the office areas. The facility had about 70 employees. Seven recirculating heating, ventilating, and air conditioning package units with heat pumps serviced the building. At the time of the site visit, the ventilation equipment seemed to be in good condition, but was being operated on an automatic mode, which allowed no supply air delivery once the temperature setpoints were satisfied. Potential contaminants in the recirculating air included chemicals from the print shop and environmental tobacco smoke. Some evidence of water damage was noted. All measurements taken for organic solvents were below the allowable limits. Of 70 questionnaires distributed, 81% were returned and analyzed. Thermal comfort, lack of air movement and smoke odors were among the most commonly reported concerns. Pain or stiffness in the back, shoulders, or neck; stuffy nose or sinus congestion; dry, itching, or irritated eyes; and tired or strained eyes were the most common symptoms reported. The author concludes that environmental tobacco smoke was a health hazard in this building. There was a potential for tobacco smoke and print shop chemicals to enter the recirculating ventilation system. The author recommends that measures be taken to reduce exposures to environmental tobacco smoke and print shop solvents
In Manaus-AM, the geographical proximity to Venezuela contributes to the fact that there is a large number of Venezuelans who have migrated in search of refuge. Under the effects of the Immigration Law, it is necessary to verify the situation of these subjects in the Manaus labor market, with access to decent work being a human right protected by them, as well as the right to educational qualification and others. From this perspective, the general objective of the research was to analyze how professional qualification influences the integration of Venezuelan immigrants in the Brazilian labor market. The methodologies of literature review, document analysis and semi-structured interviews were used to expose results extracted from other studies, applicable legislation and practical intervention carried out by the author. This is a qualitative, basic, descriptive, and bibliographic research. The results show that there are difficulties in accessing the formal labor market in Manaus by Venezuelan immigrants, even for those who have professional qualifications, which is a reality identified in other regions of the country. It was concluded that there is a need for support programs that seek to promote greater inclusion of these professionals in formal work in the region of Manaus-AM
A bewitching semblance of something to be desired: advertising nostalgia and product involvement's relative influence on attitudes and purchase intent among young adults
2014 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.Despite the recent rise of advertisements employing nostalgia, relatively few previous studies have investigated the effectiveness of nostalgic messages, especially as they might be applied to promote high- versus low-involvement products. Previous research has broadly conceptualized nostalgia without focusing on product-related or associational claims. This research used associational nostalgia where the nostalgic themes presented in the advertisements were not directly related to previous product usage. A quasi-experiment involving a convenience sample of undergraduates (n=201) in a large classroom setting was used to compare the effects of nostalgic versus non-nostalgic messages in ads for a fictitious high involvement product (laptop computer) and a fictitious low involvement product (paper notebooks). Participants were randomly assigned to one of four experimental conditions and read a single ad. Product knowledge for laptops and notebooks (and two distractor products) were measured in a pretest questionnaire; dependent measures in the posttest results were measured in terms of three dependent measures: attitude toward the ad, attitude toward the brand, and purchase intent. Additionally, because previous research has yet to determine how nostalgic advertising is most likely to be cognitively processed, open-ended cognitive response items were also included to further investigate the type of processing that is most frequently occurring. Gender was included as a possible moderating variable. The results provide mixed support for the hypothesized relationships between product involvement and nostalgic advertising themes. Findings suggest that females are particularly responsive, in terms of attitude toward the ad and attitude toward the brand, to associational nostalgic claims for the low involvement product (notebooks). Cognitive response-thought listing results suggest that when the primary thought elicited from the advertisement was nostalgic in nature, other references to the product or the ad itself decreased. Implication and practical considerations for content creators in advertising as well as future research suggestions are also discussed
