Geographical information science: geostatistics and uncertainty

    No full text
The previous progress report on geographical information science (GIS) (Atkinson, 1997) reviewed a wide range of developments in GIS that occurred in or were published in 1996. The coverage was relatively broad since the report prior to that appeared in 1993 and there was great diversity to include. However, given the limited space available for reports, wide coverage can be superficial. With this in mind, the present report focuses on one aspect of GIS of great importance: the assessment and modelling of uncertainty in spatial databases. In particular, the focus of this report is on the geostatistical assessment of uncertainty

Issues of uncertainty in super-resolution mapping and their implications for the design of an inter-comparison study

    No full text
Super-resolution mapping is a relatively new field in remote sensing whereby classification is undertaken at a finer spatial resolution than that of the input remotely sensed multiple-waveband imagery. A variety of different methods for super-resolution mapping have been proposed, including spatial pixel-swapping, spatial simulated annealing, Hopfield neural networks, feed-forward back-propagation neural networks and geostatistical methods. The accuracy of all of these new approaches has been tested, but the tests have tended to focus on the new technique (i.e. with little benchmarking against other techniques) and have used different measures of accuracy. There is, therefore, a need for greater inter-comparison between the various methods available, and a super-resolution inter-comparison study would be a welcome step towards this goal. This paper describes some of the issues that should be considered in the design of such a study

A method for describing quantitatively the information, redundancy and error in digital spatial data

    No full text
A new method for describing the information, redundancy and error in digital spatial data is presented. By modelling the spatial dependence in a given variable it is possible to determine the amount of measurement error in each observation. Then for a given sampling strategy (support sample size, and sampling scheme), it is possible to determine the proportion of underlying variation that is informative and the proportion that is redundant. The effect of sampling strategy on information is demonstrated for measurements of the red reflectance of a field of pasture

Closing the gap: Using graduate attributes to improve Indigenous education

    No full text
Peter J. Anderson and Bernadette Atkinson teach Indigenous and Traditionally Education in a Global World as a fourth year unit in the Faculty of Education at Monash University, Clayton. This paper is a self-reflective piece of work where we discuss the use of graduate attributes relating to Indigenous Education, put forward by the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). These standards have the potential to improve pre-service teachers knowledge in relation to Indigenous education, therefore equipping them with the necessary skills and tools required to teach effectively to Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. The focus of this paper pertains specifically to AITSL focus area 2.4 Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians discussing how pre-service teachers can promote reconciliation and teach Indigenous subject matter in a respectful manner to non-Indigenous students

Correspondence from Harry Atkinson to George Hideo Nakamura regarding withdrawal of limitations imposed by Nakamura's removal. The Japanese American Archival Collection documents the people, places, and daily life of Japanese Americans, primarily those who lived in the once thriving community of pre-war Florin in the Sacramento region, as well as the conditions in American incarceration camps during World War II. The approximately 7,000 original items include personal and official letters, photographs, diaries, arts and crafts, newsletters, textiles, camps artifacts, yearbooks and other publications
