Residence of Peter S Harllee
The residence of Captain, later Major, Peter S. Harllee of Palmetto and Terra Ceia. He came to Manateee County from Haygood, South Carolina in 1868. The family owned a mercantile store and sold supplies to farmers all along the Manatee River. He also and served in 1889 as the local collector of customs and belonged to the farmer's alliance in 1891. He married Alice Bullock, a neice of Mrs. James Vanderipe, and moved up to McMullen where they started a farm. They soon moved into Joel Hendrix's home along the river. Peter was interested in citrus grove but was always best known as a tomato grower. He became a county commissioner in 1892-1893, as well as a city alderman in Palmetto during 1894-1895. He was a Democrat, a Mason and a Baptist and had a brother, A.t., of South Carolina (who visited him in 1902) and a daughter Mrs. M.M. Taylor. By 1899 he had "one of the most delightful homes in Manatee County, situated in a beautiful grove of oak and hickory trees, immediately on the banks of the Manatee River, west of town," according to the Manatee River Journal. Economically, however, the years after the panic of 1893 and terrible freeze of 1894-1895 were hard. In October, 1899, "a lot of prominent wholesale merchants and lawyers from Tampa, interested in the Harllee failure at Palmetto" all came to town in order to fight the attachment issued on Harllee's property by the Citizens Bank and Trust Company in the bankruptcy proceeding. Local folks were understanding, being rather poor themselves, and in 1894 Peter S. Harllee became the first Mayor of Palmetto. He died of heart trouble in February 1911
