Miniature for horn and Piano
This is a world premiere of a work written for me by Brisbane based composer Michal Rosiak. The composer based the work around my surname Luff. The motif used is LA-FA (Luff), based around LA = Concert pitch "A" and FA = Concert pitch "F". The composer collaborated with me consistently throughout the compositional process to achieve the best musical result considering the technical strengths and constraints of the instrument. This is a unique addition to the solo horn repertoire and represents a significant contribution to a slowly growing body of works for horn and piano by Australian composers. The world premiere was given in Ghent (Belgium) after I received an invitation to perform at the 51st international horn symposium held at the School of Arts Ghent/Royal Conservatory. This work is significant in it's composition through the use of the motif LA-FA underpinning the harmonic structure of the work. As a live performance of an original work, which was also an international premiere in a different country, this represents a significant performance on the world stage for an Australian performer and composer. No Full Tex

Forces on a Rayleigh particle in the cover region of a planar waveguide
We report on the optimization of a waveguide structure for the maximization of the radiation forces exerted on a Rayleigh particle in the cover region. The two main radiation forces involved are the transverse gradient force which attracts a particle into the waveguide and the combined scattering and dissipative forces which drive the particle forward along the channel. The dependence of these forces on parameters including the incident wavelength, the surrounding medium embedding the particles, and the polarizability of the particles is discussed. Both dielectric and metallic gold spheres of radius 10 nm are considered in the model. Special emphasis is devoted to the maximization of the transverse gradient force due to the optical intensity gradient at the waveguide surface, and the wavelength dependence of the polarizability of gold nanoparticles
Paul Dean Symphony - World premiere
World premiere performance of Paul Dean's Symphony with the Australian World Orchestra in Sydney NSW. I performed as a member of the Horn section of the orchestra and was a consultant to the composer during the writing process. No Full Tex

Fanfare for Horn Choir - Catherine Likhuta
This commissioned work was given its world premiere at the Launch of the QCGU 2020 concert season in October 2019. This is a striking work where both researchers collaborated with the composer Catherine Likhuta to ensure the commission brief was adhered to. The piece is of great significance in that it represents one of only a very few fanfares for horn choir by an Australian composer. The performance was given to a live audience in the Concert Theatre of the Queensland Conservatorium on October 30, 2019.Full Tex
Using system dynamics to model the social care system: simulation modeling as the catalyst in linking demography to care delivery
This paper describes a system dynamics model for social care, developed in collaboration with a local authorityin England, as part of the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Care Life Cycleproject based at the University of Southampton. The model was populated with data from a widerange of sources, local and national. We present some illustrative results, and discuss the process of modeldevelopment and the challenges around data collection. We also discuss the benefits derived from codevelopingsuch a model with practitioner users and as part of a multi-disciplinary team involving demographersand social statisticians

Examining the Professional Practice of Brass Band Conducting
After 10 National Championship wins as Musical Director of Brisbane Excelsior Brass Band, the author is often asked several questions: What does a conductor need to know to be successful on the contest stage? What needs to be done to remain at the top of the game for such a long period? What does the author do differently to others? The answers to these questions lie in understanding the various roles of the brass band conductor, and how these roles are realized in the author’s professional practice.
There has been very little research done on maintaining the competitive edge over time despite other changeable factors and players. An understanding of the ongoing responsibilities of a musical director may help minimize the impact of socio-cultural changes within the band community following successive wins at a national level or a change of director.
This study investigates the role of the musical director by reflecting on the responsibilities and practices of successful directors and analyzing the personal characteristics and interpersonal relationships with band members through autoethnography and interviews with other directors. Attention has also been paid to the administrative support and team dynamics within the Brisbane Excelsior community.
For Brisbane Excelsior, the study found that the combination of the musical director’s ongoing self-reflection, consistent methods over 14 years (2002–2016), and intrinsic personal characteristics created an environment where band members strove to succeed, and were challenged to maintain a very high standard of playing.Thesis (Masters)Master of Music Research (MMusRes)Queensland ConservatoriumArts, Education and LawFull Tex
