No full textThis study proposes a multidisciplinary framework for optimizing the timing and the type of maintenance, based on a methodology developed to update lifetime inspection and repair of brick structures involving a decision tree analysis. Architectural heritage and civil engineering structures are designed to serve public instances, performing safely for decades. In spite of that, no matter how well they are designed, all these structures are going to deteriorate over time. Thus, maintenance strategies should promote solutions that are directed towards preservation and conservation by relying on the existing structural capacity and give preference to stabilization rather than substitution or replacement. In this context, the paper has been proactive in identifying the significance of brick-masonry arch bridges; hence, once the cultural impact has been determined, the next logical step in dealing with these historic structures was to develop a treatment/management plan. The methodology is illustrated by the first results of the project entitled “Improving assessment of Nugent bridge in Capua”, organized by the author, to develop and provide tools that help optimising the life-cycle management of brick-masonry arch bridges, preserving both the physical structure and the historic authenticity, while promoting an effective exchange of good practice between the railway administrations

ottenute nell’ambito del programma di dottorato “Modelli e Metodi per
l’Economia e il Management” dell’Università di Brescia, Dipartimento di
Economia e Management, cui l’autore ha partecipato negli anni 2018-2021.
La principale attività di ricerca è relativa all’applicazione delle metodologie
di data science, e in particolare il machine learning, allo sport, focalizzandosi
sul basket, col duplice scopo di fornire allo staff tecnico strumenti per
preparare e analizzare un match, e di affrontare il problema di classificazione
della previsione del risultato di una partita. La seconda attività di ricerca
affrontata è focalizzata sull’utilizzo del linguaggio naturale nel settore bibliometrico,
al fine di offrire strumenti utili alla individuazione e valutazione di
articoli rilevanti per uno specifico contesto scientifico (ad esempio data science
e sport, oppure COVID-19). L’insieme di tecniche utilizzate include, tra
le altre, gli Alberi di Decisione, le Random Forests, il Recursive Partitioning,
il Deep Learning, i Topic Models. Tutte le implementazioni sono scritte nel
linguaggio R, e il codice sorgente è disponibile su richiesta.This PhD dissertation summarizes research questions and related answers
achieved in the context of the PhD program of “Analytics for Economics
and Management” of University of Brescia, Department of Economics and
Management, attended by the author in the years 2018-2021. Main research
activity is related to applying data science methodologies, and machine learning
in particular, to sport, focusing on basketball. Intended goals are both
proposing tools to help coaching staff in matches’ preparation, and facing
the classification problem of outcome prediction of a match. The second
research activity is focused on natural language processing applied to the
bibliometric field, to offer valuable tools in finding and evaluating papers in
a specific research domain (e.g. data science and sport, or COVID-19). The
set of techniques includes, among others, Decision Trees, Random Forests,
Recursive Partitioning, Deep Learning, Topic Models. All implementations
are written in R language, and source code is available on demand

No full textSUMMARY The method of functional relations which has been widely adopted in economics has led to conception of the economic system as constellation of economic quantities bound to each other by simple and multiple relations This representation however makes the system appear too abstract shadowy and inconsistent To eliminate this drawback serious hindrance to the building of makro-economics the author of this paper says that it would be both necessary and useful to give priority to those of the functional relations that connect the quantities of the system and esta blish quantitative relation between the production factors available within the system at any given time To do this one must assume that the economic system covers not only given period of time but also given size of space This proportional relation between quantities which are productive factors in the system in so far as it is taken to have position of priority tends as show to be constant in time and constrains the other relations between non-factor units By this means the economic system takes on more definite and concrete shape that is it acquires specific structure of its own which differentiates it from other economic systems that may exist alongside it The author postulates four degrees of interpretation to illustrate the structure of the system he formulates an elementary definition equa tion of the structure and furthermore examines the variations of the structure and the variations the structure Thus the economic struc ture of certain system can be connected with the fund of national economy and on this well-known simile depends the flux of income employment savings consumption and so onResta Manlio. L'erbario del Prof. Manlio Chiappini (1924-1998) in Herbarium CAG
Get PDFThe herbarium of Chiappini, held in Herbarium CAG of Cagliari University, is presented. Prof. Manlio Chiappini, who dead the 4th of january 1998, teached Botany at the Athenaeum of Cagliari from 1965 to 1987 and from 1965 to 1986 he was director of Botanical Institute and Botanical gardens of Cagliari University. From a research carried out in Herbarium CAG is shown that Chiappini’s herbarium is compound of 1262 exsiccata, referred to 630 specific and subspecific entities (about the 30% of Sardinian flora), of which 45 referred to endemic species (about the 20% of Sardinian flora) and that the Museum Herbarium CAG itself is depositary of a number of 4 species pointed out, by the Author himself, for the first time to Sardinia

Representation, Reflection, and Reconciliation: The Evolving Depiction of Violence in the Committed Literature of Manlio Argueta
No full textThis dissertation focuses on the life and works of the committed Salvadoran author Manlio Argueta. It traces pertinent themes in four of his novels, El valle de las hamacas (1969), Caperucita en la zona roja (1978), Milagro de La Paz (1994), and Siglo de O(g)ro (1997). This project traces how Argueta's representation of violence markedly transitions from a mimetic representation of violence that appeals to the senses and raises awareness of the exacerbating circumstances to a subdued and psychological representation of the consequences of the violence in the face of new violence and changing panoramas. It highlights three major moments of El Salvador’s history that directly impacted the life and career of Manlio Argueta and other artists of his generation: La Matanza, the takeover of the University, and the Civil War. Argueta survived the initial periods of violence of the sixties and seventies and lived the entire Civil War period from afar. He had the time and distance needed to zoom out of the daily confrontations with violence in order to view and represent the circumstances from a different viewpoint. His exile allowed him to write with a distanced perspective of El Salvador and include different groups in his imagery of the nation. No full textThe primary objective of this project is to problematize the literary genres used by the Salvadorian author Manlio Argueta (El Salvador, 1935) in two of his texts. The primary texts used are Un día en la vida (1980) and Cuzcatlán donde bate la mar del sur (1986). In both these works the historical, social, political and cultural experiences of El Salvador are novelized through the voice of testimony. Through a review of the testimonial theory and an analysis of the text we observe that these life narratives experience a hybridization of genres, because through an aesthetic and poetic language the author merges both a literary genre the novel and a genre with a social commitment the testimonio.
