    Perry explains about his military family and his first experiences with language, race, and faith. By living in places like Germany, he was able to witness firsthand things like the Berlin Wall, and the aftermath of WWII. Later, he talks about the influences of his father's military career and how difficult it was to always be on the move. His time at Notre Dame and in Florence impacted him greatly as he studied Italian, eventually torn between the military and his further studies. In a time of contentious debates and protests surrounding the removal of Confederate monuments, this book considers how so-called “neo-Confederates” can distance themselves from the actions of white supremacists while also clinging to the very symbols and narratives that tether the Confederacy to histories of racism and oppression in the United States
