Art and the artist in the literary works of Elsa Triolet
This thesis takes a representative selection of Triolet's works to study the themes of writing and creativity as they are presented in the novels. These are all portraits of artists and the accounts of the search for a synthesis of aesthetic freedom and ethical responsibility. It considers Triolet's importance as a foreign writer, adopting a new creative language to be adopted by a different cultural
environment, to be essential in understanding her importance to the French literary tradition. By emphasising her formative years in the avant-garde circles of prerevolutionary Russia, my study demonstrates her considerable contribution to the meeting of Russian and French aesthetic theories. I extend this with close textual
readings of certain works to demonstrate her techniques in novelistic construction which reveal many Formalist practices before Formalist works in translation made
their official influence on creative methods.
The introduction considers the reasons for Triolet's neglect as a writer. It then considers various contemporary and recent critical appraisals which indicate
the interest she has received until present and which allow me to define my own critical approach. Part One traces Triolet's literary evolution from her formative
years in Russia, through exile to her first publications in Russian. It then considers her insertion into French literary activity, and her association with the schools of
socialist realism and the "nouveau roman".
Part Two examines two traditional novels which portray the creative and metaphorical roles of the artist and his work, showing the constant conflict between private and public lives. In Part Three, I show how aspects of novelistic
traditionalism are gradually foregrounded so that the work develops a dual-sided character where it both narrates and examines the processes of its own narration. In Part Four, this move to highly self-conscious aesthetics demonstrates an idiosyncratic exploration of new paths for the novel that bring visual, auditive and cinematographic media into the traditional domain of written art. Accompanying
the very post-modernist experimentation, I show how this research within the novel into the novel's own future has an ethical and redemptive purpose whose final conclusion is that creativity and human freedom are inexorably interwoven
The intimacy which is knowledge : female friendship in the novels of women writers
The thesis offers a historical account of the
representation of friendship in the novels of English
women writers from the nineteenth century to the
present. Questioning the prevalent understanding of the
history of women's friendship in terms of a single major
rupture, from nineteenth-century 'innocence' to
twentieth-century 'guilt', the thesis identifies
narrative configurations which recur throughout this,
period, and which define friendship as a formative
learning experience integrally related to the
acquisition of gendered identity. It concludes that
there can be no final and 'perfect' representation of
friendship, since the nature of the "knowledge' shared
has continually shifted in relation to changing
understandings of femininity.
Chapter 1 identifies the origins and nature of the
Victorian concept of the "second self", in which the
friend acts as the mirror of, and means of access to, an
idealised female subjectivity. Chapter 2 analyses the
ways in which this concept informs the narrative
patterns and rituals in Victorian fictions of
friendship. Chapter 3 offers a new reading of novels by
Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot and Charlotte Bronte, in
which the conventions identified in Chapter 2 are
adapted to question the existing boundaries of feminine
identity. Chapter 4 examines the impact of changes in
women's education upon the representation of friendship
in turn-of-the-century feminist and anti-feminist
novels, and in a new genre, the school story for girls.
Chapter 5 shows that the scientific construct of
lesbianism produced a new distinction between the
'healthy' and the 'unhealthy' relationship, but that the
terms of this distinction were contested; in
twentieth-century novels of the 'gyriaeceum', the
tradition continues, but is newly eroticised. Chapter 6
looks at friendship as 'revision' in recent English and
American novels, in which earlier configurations are
redeployed in the light of contemporary feminist concern
to recuperate and re-imagine the past
‘The Churchillian Paradigm and the “Other British Isles”: An Examination of Second World War Remembrance in Man, Orkney, and Jersey’
This dissertation studies Second World War ‘sites of memory’ in the islands of Jersey, Orkney and the Isle of Man, to determine if each island celebrates the war’s events as Britain does, or if they have charted their own mnemonic course. It builds on the work of Angus Calder, Malcolm Smith, and Mark Connelly, who have explored how popular conception of the Second World War in Britain has been structured around a certain set of commemorative motifs, most of which centre on Winston Churchill and the events of 1940. The British war narrative is now commonly referred to as the ‘Churchillian paradigm’ or ‘finest-hour myth’, and continues to be the driving force in commemoration and memorialization on the British mainland. The three islands in this study are culturally and historically distinct from Britain, and each has strong notions of its own ‘island identity’. Each also possesses a tangential and divisive domestic experience of war, one which is often minimized in the iconography of the Churchillian paradigm. Jersey was occupied by Nazi Germany from 1940 to 1945, Orkney was home to several thousand Italian POWs who built important infrastructure in the island, and the Isle of Man was home to 14,000 German, Finnish, Japanese, and Italian internees in what one critic has called ‘a bespattered page’ in the nation’s history. By examining ‘sites of memory’— museums, heritage sites, commemorations, celebrations, philately, and use of public space—this dissertation shows that each island simultaneously accepts and rejects elements of the finest-hour myth in their collective memory. Each island displays its unique (though often quite negative) heritage in order to differentiate itself from Britain, while at the same time allowing them, at certain events, to participate in celebration of Britain’s ‘greatest victory’. In this way, islands’ use ‘Britishness’ pragmatically, by basking in traditionally ‘British’ commemorative tropes, while at the same time deepening their own cultural and historical sovereignty
Perfectionism, Shame, and Aggression in Depressive Patients With Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Depressive symptoms are known to co-occur in patients with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). From a psychodynamic perspective, perfectionism, shame, and aggression are regarded as prominent in depressed patients. The authors investigated the occurrence of perfectionism, shame, and aggression in patients with NPD, and whether shame is a mediating or a moderating factor for aggression. Two groups of patients with depression, 61 diagnosed with NPD and no other personality disorders (PD) were compared with 56 without any PD, using the SCID screening questionnaire and a semistructured interview. All participants were administered the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, the Internalized Shame Scale, and the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire. The NPD group showed significantly higher scores for self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism, shame, and aggression (i.e., physical, verbal, anger, and hostility). Shame was found to act as a mediating factor, reducing levels of aggression in patients with perfectionistic traits.</p
Addressing geographical variation in the progression of non-communicable diseases in Peru: the CRONICAS cohort study protocol.
Background The rise in non-communicable diseases in developing countries has gained increased attention. Given that around 80% of deaths related to non-communicable diseases occur in low- and middle-income countries, there is a need for local knowledge to address such problems. Longitudinal studies can provide valuable information about disease burden of non-communicable diseases in Latin America to inform both public health and clinical settings. Methods The CRONICAS cohort is a longitudinal study performed in three Peruvian settings that differ by degree of urbanisation, level of outdoor and indoor pollution and altitude. The author sought to enrol an age- and sex-stratified random sample of 1000 participants at each site. Study procedures include questionnaires on socio-demographics and well-known risk factors for cardiopulmonary disease, blood draw, anthropometry and body composition, blood pressure and spirometry before and after bronchodilators. All participants will be visited at baseline, at 20 and 40 months. A random sample of 100 households at each site will be assessed for 24 h particulate matter concentration. Primary outcomes include prevalence of risk factors for cardiopulmonary diseases, changes in blood pressure and blood glucose over time and decline in lung function. Discussion There is an urgent need to characterise the prevalence and burden of non-communicable diseases in low- and middle-income countries. Peru is a middle-income country currently undergoing a rapid epidemiological transition. This longitudinal study will provide valuable information on cardiopulmonary outcomes in three different settings and will provide a platform to address potential interventions that are locally relevant or applicable to other similar settings in Latin America
Chinese mothers - Western daughters? : cross-cultural representations of mother-daughter relationships in contemporary Chinese and Western women's writing
This study looks at women's prose narrative representing four major
Chinese communities during the last 30 years, and focuses on the depiction of
mother-daughter relationships among personae within the narrative texts. The
thesis seeks to suggest that mother-daughter relationships within the texts are a
reflection of how a text responds to its mother culture in the course of development.
Narrative prose ranging from self-professed autobiographies to the fictional,
written by Chinese women from American-Chinese communities, Hong Kong,
Taiwan and Mainland China, are examined in a comparative approach within an
ethnical framework. The concept of a national literature is discussed with regard to
different fonns of Chinese-ness.
It is revealed, in the course of this examination, that each group of Chinese
women's writing examined here demonstrates an acute awareness of a link with an
original mother culture, the Chinese orientation. However, recent events both
inside and outside China have inevitably shaped cultural development in these
communities, resulting in splits and diversifications in the individual cultural
consciousness.
Approached from this perspective, the Chinese mother culture gains a new
vitality by virtue of shedding the burden of a long history. Focusing on the
intertextual activities of regional writings, it is shown that represented Chinese-ness
is no longer an unchanged and unchanging phenomenon, but is redefined each
moment through the locus of interactions among independent hybrid communities
Embedding the personal: the construction of a 'fashion autobiography' as a museum exhibition, informed by innovative practice at ModeMuseum, Antwerp
My intention is to contribute to the field of exhibition-making a repertoire of presentation modes, previously not analysed or documented, that can be applied to the display of fashion in the museum and which will extend those techniques currently available to the exhibition-maker to create meaningful and stimulating exhibition environments.
Part 1 contextualises my investigation, through discussion of the exhibition as source material, the methods employed to execute the research and analysis of relevant literature. Part 1 concludes with an introduction to ModeMuseum, Antwerp, which is the primary location for my research.
Part 2 details the identification, description and definition of a repertoire of presentation modes, classified and distinguished as innovative through comparative analysis of over 100 exhibitions visited for this research, alongside investigation of the exhibition formats and structures that support deployment of the modes.
Part 3 relates the application of the presentation modes to the construction of a 'fashion autobiography‘ in the form of a proposal for a hypothetical exhibition, through examination of the processes utilised to develop the exhibition narrative and detailed account of the proposal in its final realisation.
In conclusion, I will critically reflect on the research executed, underlining the interrelationship of the theoretical and practice-based activities. Finally, I will detail opportunities taken to disseminate this research, and indicate possible directions for continued investigation

Fever and its treatment among the more and less poor in Sub-Saharan Africa
The author empirically explores the relationship between household poverty and the incidence and treatment of fever--as an indicator of malaria--among children in Sub-Saharan Africa. He uses household Demographic and Health Survey data collected in the 1990s from 22 countriesin which malaria is prevalent. The analysis reveals a positive, but weak, association between reported fever and poverty. The geographic association becomes insignificant, however, after controlling for the mother's education. There is some evidence that higher levels of wealth in other households in the cluster in which the household lives are associated with lower levels of reported fever in Eastern and Southern Africa. Poverty and the type of care sought for an episode of fever are significantly associated: wealthier households are substantially more likely to seek care in the modern health sector. In Central and Western Africa those from richer households are more likely to seek care from all types of sources: government hospitals, lower-level public facilities such as health clinics, as well as private sources. In Eastern and Southern Africa the rich are primarily more likely to seek care from private facilities. In both regions there is substantial use of private facilities--use that increases with wealth. Like the incidence of fever, treatment-seeking behavior is strongly associated with the level of wealth in the cluster in which the child lives.Disease Control&Prevention,Health Systems Development&Reform,Public Health Promotion,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Early Child and Children's Health,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Poverty Assessment,Communicable Diseases,Statistical&Mathematical Sciences,Health Indicators
