    The biography of G.I. Blosfeld, the author of the first handbook on forensic medicine for lawyers

    The paper covers some chapters of the biography of Professor G.I. Blosfeld (1797–1884), who was a famous scientist and headed the Department of Forensic Medicine, Medical Policy, History of Medicine, Hygiene, and Toxicology of the Kazan Imperial University from 1839 to 1864. A brief description of the state of medicine, public health, and teaching of medical sciences in the Russian Empire of the late 18th and early 19th centuries has been provided. The archival data on the activities of G.I. Blosfeld in the chair, memories of his students have been presented. The achievements of G.I. Blosfeld as a researcher and lecturer, who organized forensic medicine teaching at the Law Department of the Kazan University and created the first handbook on forensic medicine for lawyers published in 1847 in Kazan. The structure of the handbook has been analyzed, as well as other works of this researcher. His role among other forensic medical examiners of that period has been demonstrated

    This article examined GI as an Intellectual Property Right (IPR) in India. In doing this, the author will mention about the concept of GI and other concepts and terminologies related with GI. The research paper will discuss about the implications and non-legal implications of G.I Tag as an IPR. To give legal rights to the people whose trade or craft come available only due to their geographical factors, the government provides Geographical Indications or GI Tag. The author also put forth that the G.I holders must rethink and work on their strategies to get the desired success and further development .The paper will also focus on the evolution of G.I in India and its importance as well. The paper will then examine the existing approaches required for protection of G.I as well as the existing legal framework for GI protection in India, its procedure for Registration and other proposed bills meant to aid the development of IP in India. It then critically appraised India’s traditional cultural expressions/traditional knowledge and agricultural produce as the subject matter of GI protection. More so, the article analyzed the challenges facing developing countries with regards to GI protection. In keeping with the tradition of legal writing, the researchers adopt the doctrinal approach for the purpose of this research

    A Scalarizing One-Stage Algorithm for Efficient Multi-Objective Optimization

    A novel kriging-assisted algorithm is proposed for computationally expensive multi-objective optimization problems, such as those which arise in electromagnetic design. The algorithm combines the multiple objectives into a single objective, which it then optimizes using a one-stage method from singleobjective optimization. Its efficiency is demonstrated by comparison to a random search on a difficult test function

    Man-made islands in Mackenzie River: Evaluation of hydraulic design

    Norman Hells is situated on the north bank of the Mackenzie River, 145 km south of the Arctic Circle. The use of a pool-wide water flood system for secondary recovery and the features of the oil-bearing structure require six man-made platforms to provide vertical access to the portion of the oil pool that 1 ies beneath the Mackenzie River (60%). With a view to the economic viability of the secondary recovery project, man-made islands - hydraulically filled - represent the least risk of massive failure in connection with the environmental loads to be expected. As the man-made islands predominantly determine the economic feasibility of the expansion project, their design has been kept conservative, reflecting a tried and true construction concept, appl ied under various conditions. The design criteria were established by Esso Resources Canada Ltd. in co-operation with Hydronamic. The 'final' design resulted from several additional studies and computations. This report embraces the results of the above-mentioned studies and computations in hydraul ic engineering focussing on: (1) the computation of surge velocities during the release -of severe river-ice jams; (2) the computation of the degree of damage to the rip-rap slope protection; (3) the prediction of the development of local scour in the river bed adjacent to the rip-rap apron

    Lee Kennett's book is a new paperback edition of a book originally published in 1987. With information from new sources, the author has produced a first rate social history of the American G.I. during World War II. He has detailed the "collective portrait" and the "collective experience" of the G.I. from his draft and induction to his return to civilian life. In doing so, Kennett based his story primarily on the noncombatant experiences of the G.I., the letters and memoirs of the G.l.s themselves, the thoughts of their commanding officers, the statements of fellow Allies and enemies, those who were liberated and conquered, and the historical literature of the Second World War

    “Meek Russian Genius”: Reception of Andrei Platonov’s Prose in the Diaries of G.I. Alekseev

    On the material of the diary prose of the Leningrad poet, prose writer, and artist G.I. Alekseev (1932–1987), the article traces his perception of the personality and work of Andrei Platonov. The author of the diary could get acquainted with Platonov’s prose in the late 50s or early 60s. References to Platonov have been found in the diary since 1963. They relate either to the literary fate and reputation of the writer, or his attitude, manifested in style. Platonov invariably appears among the best stylists-prose writers of the 20th century. Alekseev, a Leningrad free verse writer, not recognized by the professional community, projects his reflections on the literary fate of Platonov onto his own life in literature. In his notes, Alekseev fixes such features of Platonov’s poetics as childishness, even infantilism, and at the same time the wisdom of looking; “childish freshness of language” despite the fact that “the words are all old”; addressing the main issues of being (good and evil, life and death); special interest in the problem of human mortality and its overcoming. “Intimacy,” the ability to see through everyday life, “bewilderment before being,” persistent asking of questions — all this makes Alekseev one of Platonov’s followers, not at the level of imitation, but at the level of community of the aesthetic and ideological platform. Platonov became a landmark for many writers who overcame socialist realism, and Alekseev is among them

    Analysis of the behaviour of ground clutter on behalf of clutter suppression with solidar

    Interest in clutter is almost universal in radar research, because most of the radar echo signals received by radar do not originate only from the desired target, but also from surrounding objects or surfaces which tend to mask the target signal. In radar rainfall observations, the interference of ground clutter cannot always be avoided, which makes it necessary to use some technique to extract only the precipitation echoes from the received radar signal by rejecting the ground clutter. The choice of effective detection processes depends critically upon the statistics of clutter. The Telecommunication Group, TU Delft, has initiated a method of ground clutter suppression with the use of phase data information of the radar data. From the difference of the decorrelation time of rain and ground clutter, ground clutter signals can be suppressed. In this report, an analysis of amplitude and phase data of 4 selected clutter areas are given.     Port of Thessaloniki: Masterplan

    The Port of Thessaloniki is the second biggest port in Greece after Piraeus. Located in the Northern part of the country, it has a large hinterland above it, the Balkan Peninsula, which renders the Port a transit one. It is naturally protected from winds and waves and it is the best alternative for vessels coming from the Suez Canal and heading towards the Balkans. Competition though is intense in the Adriatic and the Black Sea especially due to the container industry booming as well as the concession of several container terminals in the region to international stevedoring companies. The Port of Thessaloniki seems to be at the moment the leading spoke port in the region. In order thus to maintain this leading position, a proper Masterplan is required, something that has been missing for the last years. This Thesis is the result of an effort to create such a port planning. An inventory of the present situation of the Port was conducted taking into account elements like dry and wet infrastructure, road and rail networks, connections with the regional and national transport networks as well as waterside and landside handling equipment using methods like the queuing theory. These figures were compared to the present cargo and passenger throughput in order to depict deficiencies, lacks and surpluses per terminal. The future needs were then demonstrated based on forecasts. These forecasts were the combination of the extrapolation of past data, the consideration of several transport trends (containerization, liquefied natural gas) as well as the insight in the financial situation of the Balkan countries that constitute the potential customers of the Port. Three different growth scenarios were assumed while the 28-years duration of the Masterplan was divided into three periods (2008-2015-2025-2035). Having these needs as a base, eight alternatives were generated. A multi criteria analysis was then used in order to end up with the three most promising alternatives; the validity of this analysis was verified by five sensitivity checks which demonstrated similar results. Finally an ideal port layout was chosen which was accompanied by the respective construction phasing. The present Thesis was meant to fill a gap; that of the lack of a Masterplan. Fortunately, it can be concluded that the present condition of the Port is adequate for the current cargo and passenger throughput which shows that the rough planning that has been implemented by the consequent authorities until now was successful. Moreover, from now and on, a Masterplan should be considered as mandatory and the present Thesis comprises the ideal blueprint for this. In order to render this report more realistic though, regular updates shall be conducted almost every five years while the forecasts shall be checked and readjusted continuously.Civil Engineering and Geoscience
