Semistable Higgs bundles on elliptic surfaces
No full textWe analyze Higgs bundles (V, phi) on a class of elliptic surfaces pi : X -> B, whose underlying vector bundle V has vertical determinant and is fiberwise semistable. We prove that if the spectral curve of V is reduced, then the Higgs field phi is vertical, while if the bundle V is fiberwise regular with reduced (respectively, integral) spectral curve, and if its rank and second Chern number satisfy an inequality involving the genus of B and the degree of the fundamental line bundle of pi (respectively, if the fundamental line bundle is sufficiently ample), then phi is scalar. We apply these results to the problem of characterizing slope-semistable Higgs bundles with vanishing discriminant on the class of elliptic surfaces considered, in terms of the semistability of their pull-backs via maps from arbitrary (smooth, irreducible, complete) curves to X

BEHIND THE ATKINSON INDEX: MEASURING EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY IN HEALTH
No full textThis paper proposes a new approach to the measurement of equality of opportunity in health, based on the path independent Atkinson index of equality. The proposed decomposition is applied both to the ex-ante and the ex-post methodologies recently adopted by the literature. The approach is applied to the measurement of equality of opportunity in health using ten waves of the British Household Panel Survey. Results confirm that socioeconomic background is an important factor determining individual health in adulthood while the incidence of equality of opportunity is around one third of the overall equality according to a substantial stable pattern over years. Our findings also depict that differences in education, in social conditions and in the life style are crucial determinants of the shape of the observed health equalities in adulthood, explaining how potential differences can be derived by the combination of different circumstances
Moduli of rank 2 Higgs sheaves on elliptic surfaces
No full textWe study torsion-free, rank 2 Higgs sheaves on genus one fibered surfaces, (semi)stable with respect to suitable polarizations in the sense of Friedman and O’Grady. We prove that slope-semistability of a Higgs sheaf on the surface implies semistability on the generic fiber. In the case of Higgs sheaves of odd fiber degree on elliptic surfaces in characteristic ≠ 2 , we prove that any moduli space of Higgs sheaves with fixed numerical invariants splits canonically as the product of the moduli space of ordinary sheaves (with the same invariants), and the space of global regular 1-forms on the surface. For elliptic surfaces with section in characteristic zero, and in the case arbitrary fiber degree, we prove that if a Higgs sheaf has reduced Friedman spectral curve, or is regular on a general fiber with non-reduced spectral cover, then its Higgs field takes values in the saturation of the pull-back of the canonical bundle of the base curve in the cotangent bundle of the surface
Libertà: aspetti teorici ed empirici
No full textLa riflessione teorica sulla libertà e sulla sua misurazione ha visto, negli ultimi decenni, un notevole sviluppo quantitativo e qualitativo in diverse aeree, dalla filosofia alle scienze politiche, dall’economia normativa alla teoria della giustizia. Tuttavia, questi studi hanno mostrato finora una scarsa preoccupazione per gli aspetti empirici del problema, ovvero per il modo in cui le varie misure teoriche possano essere incorporate in modelli in grado di generare asserzioni empiricamente controllabili. Anzi, soprattutto in ambienti filosofici, vi è un certo scetticismo nei confronti della possibilità stessa di dare al concetto di libertà una tale dimensione empirica stabilendo una correlazione fra la libertà di scegliere qualcosa o di compiere una certa azione e i comportamenti individuali osservabili. Il principale scopo di questo lavoro è quello di mostrare che questo scetticismo è in una certa misura infondato e che è possibile dare un contenuto empirico ad alcuni tipi importanti di asserzioni sulla libertà. In questo lavoro presentiamo un modello per formulare, controllare e rivedere ipotesi sulla libertà. Il nostro approccio è empirico, nel senso che queste ipotesi sono controllate sulla base delle osservazioni, e statistico in quanto tali controlli riguardano campioni e popolazioni piuttosto che singoli individui
