No full textThis collection consists of photographs, postcards, a commencement program, and other memorabilia collected by Winthrop graduate Constance Pelzer (Class of 1922) while she was at Winthrop. Constance\u27s mother Josephine Bonner Pelzer also attended Winthrop in the late 1890s and was a friend and classmate of Mai Rutledge Smith who later married the founder and first president of Winthrop, David Bancroft Johnson in 1901. This collection provides a good source for women’s history, Winthrop College/University history, and period social/cultural history.
Descriptive List of Items:
6 black and white photos (really brownish): 1) Constance Pelzer with her aunt and cousin at empty swimming pool. 2) Dr. “Deeb” Johnson. 3) Pelzer sitting on Winthrop University lawn. 4) Pelzer as College Marshall, with house and tree in background. 5) Narrow strip of photo of Pelzer as Marshall. 6) Small cut from photo of three women seated. Center woman looks like Constance Pelzer.
16 postcards: Ten postcards of buildings and the garden of Winthrop University are color-tinted. The remaining brown-and-cream postcards show the exterior views of four Winthrop buildings and interior views of the College auditorium and library. Noting the reverse side of the postcards, one was sent with a handwritten message and stamps. The other only had a 1 cent stamp.
4 print or handwritten items: One partial news clipping congratulates Constance Pelzer for being chosen as College Marshall (among others). Another item is a 1922 Commencement program and list of graduates, including Constance Pelzer on cream cardstock. One of the two handwritten items is an unsigned note (presumably by Constance Pelzer) on a small square of acidic paper describing the friendship of her mother and the wife of President D.B. Johnson and Constance’s subsequent frequent visits with the Johnsons that introduced her to many notable guests (among them Jane Addams and the donor Harry Emerson Fosdick). The other handwritten piece is a letterhead note from Mrs. James W. No full textThis collection consists of letters, lesson plans, examination, photographs, student papers written, course syllabi, newspaper articles, excerpts of written material for class handouts. Constance Ashton Myers was a historian, author, and professor born in 1927 affectionately known to her family and friends as Connie. During the 1970s, Myers traveled around the United States and interviewed Suffragettes and other women and recorded their interviews. She participated actively in the women’s liberation movement throughout her years giving speeches, writing books, and interviewing women. Dr. Myers attended and taught at Sacramento State College, University of South Carolina at Aiken, and Augusta College as well as worked with many other institutions. In 1969 Myers was dismissed from her teaching at Augusta College in Georgia and she filed for sex discrimination. Throughout her career Myers gave many lectures on women’s history particularly on the Suffragettes, race relations in the south, Marxism, and Latin America. Some of her writings include: The Prophet’s Army: Trotskyists in America, 1928-1941 and “God, Darwin, and the Founding Fathers: Voice of Resistance to the Woman Suffrage and Equal Rights Amendments a Study in Popular Culture”. In 2012 Myers was killed a bus-car collision her husband Cecil survived the crash.
