Abstract: The short story “High Rise” was published in 2021 by Brazilian-American author Frances de Pontes Peebles. The story reflects the socio-political tensions surrounding the death of a five-year-old boy who fell from the ninth floor of a luxurious high-rise in Recife, Brazil, during the Covid-19 pandemic. It explores how neglect and violence shape the lives of Brazil’s marginalized groups, highlighting the ways social hierarchies are maintained even amid global crises like the pandemic. The translation into Portuguese is introduced by a discussion of the story within Brazil’s social, historical, and political framework. It also examines the challenges and nuances of translating such a culturally specific narrative for a Brazilian readership.

Resumo: O conto “High Rise” foi publicado em 2021 pela autora brasileiro-americana Frances de Pontes Peebles. A narrativa reflete as tensões sociopolíticas que vêm à tona quando um menino de cinco anos cai do nono andar de um edifício de alto padrão no Recife durante a pandemia de Covid-19. O texto explora como a negligência e a violência determinam a vida de grupos marginalizados no Brasil, evidenciando também como as hierarquias sociais são mantidas mesmo durante uma crise global como a pandemia. A tradução para o português é precedida por uma discussão sobre o texto e o entorno social, histórico e político do Brasil e examina decisões e desafios de traduzir uma narrativa localizada no Nordeste para o público brasileiro.

Zásadně tím ovlivnil moderní kosmologii, z níž se nyní stala ucelená a věrohodná vědní disciplína opírající se o logický systém teoretických modelů podporovaný velmi přesnými pozorováními. Peebles je odborníkem především na primordiální vznik prvků, reliktní mikrovlnné záření a formování galaktických struktur. Jeho vědecké práce, knihy a učebnice inspirovaly bezpočet kolegů i studentů

Influence of halogen variation on structure and interactions in vinyl halide (H2C=CHX)…CO2 (X = F, Cl, Br) complexes
No full textChirped-pulse and resonant cavity Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy have been used to investigate dimers of CO with vinyl fluoride (VF), vinyl chloride (VCl) and vinyl bromide (VBr). For all three complexes, CO is aligned adjacent to the X--C--H end (X = F, Cl, Br) of the ethylene subunit, with C--XC and C--HO contacts. For VFCO, a second isomer is also observed, with CO roughly parallel to the H--C=C--F side of VFhowever, there is no spectroscopic indication that similar structures are present for VClCO or VBrCO.
For vinyl fluorideCO, a full structural analysis has previously been published,\footnote {C. L. Christenholz, R. E. Dorris, R. A. Peebles, S. A. Peebles, {\it J. Phys. Chem. A}, {\bf 118}, (2014), 8765-8772.} while for the Cl- and Br-containing species, insufficient data are presently available for complete structure determinations. However, structural information from ab initio calculations, Cl/Cl and Br/Br isotopic substitution, and analysis of chlorine and bromine nuclear quadrupole coupling constants will be presented. In addition, for this series of dimers containing C--HO contacts, further insight into the nature of the weak interactions may be obtained from Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) and other {\it ab initio} analyses that are presently in progress.Made available in DSpace on 2017-01-26T21:39:41Z (GMT).
